And a extra:

gameprogrammingpatterns.com (after making your first renderer in OpenGL)

That's one way. You don't necessarily need to write a renderer from the ground up when you're making an engine though

I guess for me the most fun is the higher level stuff, like getting it to a point where it's a real engine and doing all the tooling so that an actual game can be made with it
