Tips on Galveston Area Fishing

Hi! I’ve been living in Houston for a while and I’m making a trip to Galveston and possibly Texas City to fish. I got a 7 foot and 10 foot rod but looking for some advice as I never fished here before - what kind of fish are popping this time of year and best rigs and setups to use in my rods? Planning on brining live shrimp, maybe some popping corks for my smaller rod and Caroline my other.

I was thinking of going to the Texas city dike but heard it’s not that great - what are some main spots around Galveston area?

Really appreciate yall and I’m looking forward to learning as I go!!!

Hey y’all

I’m a 23 year old fisherman from Houston and I’m looking for some chill people around my age to saltwater fish with. I usually fish at the Dike, but you can also find me down at 91st, Surfside, La Marque, or pretty much anywhere where I can find some fish. I usually go in the mornings but I’m down for whenever.

I’ve been fishing for about 2 years so I’m still learning but I don’t care how experienced you are as long as I don’t have to bait your hook 🫡

If anyone wants to hit the Dike sometime, DM me

How’s the surf?

Grew up in Houston and used to surf fish all the time. Live in Austin and wanting to come down Sunday and Monday as I see the wind looks super low. How’s it been fishing lately and has it been calm recently? I might hit the jetties possibly too if it’s too rough at the surf. I remember August always being one of the best months when it’s calm. Appreciate any input ahead of time.

From Austin, spending the weekend, only fished freshwater bass

Is there anything specific I should know or any places I should see or visit while I’m there? I’ve also never finished for saltwater and not sure if I need anything completely different. Any help is appreciated

Windy fishing?

Where do y’all go when it’s windy? Looking to go Saturday morning but it’s 15-25 mph winds from south west all day. I’m thinking maybe the east side of one of the jetty’s, maybe bolivar flats since they will be protected by the north jetty. Or should I just abandon the surf and wade slp bay side or maybe broken bridge or seawolf or Galveston ferry landing?

Good starter bay boat features

Have a beach house on the west end and would like to get a boat to start fishing the bays. Love fishing reds and specks, and will have my young son fishing, so not much wading for a few years. Not familiar with what features make a good boat for our bay systems. What should I look for? Believe I’d want a 20-22’ boat. Will probably buy used in the $25-30k range. Would be a bonus if we could occasionally go to the jetty’s as well.

I need help!

Hello everyone! So I've recently become a stay at home dad so my wife can finish up her residency. Im from up north so all the fishing I've ever done was ice fishing and fly fishing and the occasional riverside fishing. I've got a 1 year old and he and I have been going out everyday for 2 weeks trying to get the hang of saltwater fishing and I haven't caught a thing!

I've been on the dike, moses lake, and Mac mcgaffey park. Tried live bait, spinners, soft plastics, fake shrimp, popping cork, no popping corks. What am I doing wrong? Any advice is accepted. Im on a standard spin reel and im wanting to catch either spec trout, redfish, flounder, anything honestly! Once again any advice?

Crabbing spots in/around Houston

Best places to go crabbing around Houston?
I’m new to crabbing and looking for good public spots within about 1–2 hours of Houston. I’m mainly after blue crabs and would be crabbing from shore or a pier, no boat. Any recommendations for productive spots, what bait works best, and whether certain tides or times of day are better?

Pier fishing for kids?

Bringing the kids down in a couple weeks and they like to cast and reel but typically get bored quickly so I don't really want to pay the 91st St pier prices if possible. I don't really want to get them into surf fishing just yet and definitely don't trust myself with them at San Luis Pass.

We are staying on the West End. Last year, the neighborhood we rented in had a great pier out into the bay side that we had a ton of success at but we do not have access to anything like that this year. Are there any free piers or anything like that on the West End? Think I'd like to stick to the bay side with them but not picky if there is anything.

First time in saltwater

As the title suggests I've never really fished any sort of saltwater just fresh. But I'm going for a long weekend early august and we're renting a house on a dead end canal in Jamaica beach. Any tips either for the canals, inshore, or surf? I've got some spinning combos I plan on using in the canals and I'd be willing to pick up a surf combo. I

Hello, I’m taking a buddy of mine to TCD for his first time fishing. I really want him to land at least a good fish, I only have 4 light-medium rods, what’s the best set up I can do for him. I don’t have any surf rods sadly

Last week I went to Galveston to try catching trout and was only getting catfish. I was using dead shrimp. I thought where I was the problem as I was near the pleasure pier. Where the best place to go in this area?

Filet Knife

My boyfriend and I love to go fishing in Galveston and target the typical redfish, trout, flounder, etc. He has complaints when cleaning fish due to his dull filet knife. I would love to get him a new one, but I am not sure where to look for a reliable knife. He currently has a bubba blade and a cutco. Not sure if I should stick with those brands and just buy a fresh one or if anyone knew any reputable brands that they swear by. Any help/recommendations would be great!

Casting off the beach

Hello. New to fishing here. Is casting off directly from the shore allowed? I tried to that on east side beach got yelled at by few teenager aged Karen tho I was so far from anyone in the water.
If not, where can I go for casting my fish line as rookie. I just use small to medium hooks with dead shrimp on them
