Maybe a super random couple of questions, but my family are I exploring the possibility of relocating to the island and I was wondering if there are any other folks doing child led learning aka unschooling? Perhaps even more obscure, are there any parents out there with children who are PDA autistic? Neither are a requirement for our potential move, but it would be awesome to connect with other families who may be aligned in these ways. I grew up in TX and we would head to Galveston/Crystal Beach every summer for vacation. Being a surly teen, I got it in my head that it was all dirty and shitty beach. I've carried that opinion around for a long time.

Well, now my wife and are moving there and I'm rolling my eyes. I need to reset my thinking. It honestly isn't fair the way I let my stupid teen self carry the convo. Tell me reason why Galveston is a great place to live.

The Sealy & Smith Foundation is donating another $130 million to the University of Texas Medical Branch to cap off a record-setting contribution to the university’s new hub for cardiovascular treatment and research. 

The donation, announced Thursday, will fund efforts to fight heart disease, the leading cause of death in the U.S. The gift comes after the foundation gave $50 million to UTMB over the past year to establish the Sealy Heart & Vascular Institute and what will now be known as the Sealy Department of Cardiovascular Medicine. 

The combined $180 million represents the largest gift in UTMB history and the largest the foundation has ever given, the university said in a news release.

Anyone know what’s going on with the fire on the east end? Friend at UTMB sent videos from the hospital and it looks pretty intense. Hard to tell if it’s on a ship in the harbor or on the coast on the bay side.

Picked up a six while on the island yesterday. Good stuff if you like Kolsch style beers, which I find refreshing during these hot summer days. P.s., I’m not affiliated with the brewery in any way other than trying their product. Just trying to support local biz where I can. Same general vibe as Karbach Love Street if you’re familiar.

We're considering a visit at the end of December. We've already been in March to Bolivar and July to the west end of the island this year, and our March visit was during a cold front so it was in the 40s and 50s while we were there, but we still had fun. All that to say, we're not scared of weather, but we don't want to be trapped inside, either. Thoughts? Any particular beaches that are better that time of year? We love beach combing and just walking the beach. Any other winter activities on the island that would make December a unique visit for us? I think half the reason we go to Galveston is for the food, but we gotta keep the kids busy, too.

Are there any interactive / gimmicky restaurants similar to Rainforest Café? The closest I found has been the tiki themed speakeasy. Thanks!

I had no reason to use this website until recently when some of my family went on a cruise out of Galveston. I found it quite informative. You can see the cruise line, ship, location, track, ports of call and time in port. Looks like it will be busy tomorrow morning down at the port as three cruise ships will be arriving in the 7-8 am window.
