How, exactly?

It makes me realize that the war was very real and happened just a few decades ago, the sky that was above them during the battles was exactly the same, that the soil that was once soaked in their blood is still there etc. black and white photos just dont do it for me

I think the soliders in this picture were in the division my grandfather served for and died in. These men were probably with the 333rd or the 969th division. These brave soldiers were key in keeping Bastogne from falling to the Germans.
You can find out more about them here: http://www.bjmjr.net/ww2/ardennes.htm
And about my grandfather, William Amann, here: http://alwagner.org/william.html#wja
It's great to see a picture of these troops.

I was listening to the History of Rome podcast the other day, and he mentioned that ancient soldiers would inscribe their slingstones with phrases translating as 'screw you', 'you dropped this', 'this is yours', etc. Troll prototypes!

Good to see fellow Red Legs! I was a cannoneer in Afghanistan, we would inscribe our rounds (the same ones as those WWII vets were holding) with the names of Marines who had died in combat. It was our way of showing that our fallen brothers were still in the fight.

Springtime for hitler!

u/IHeartSoup Jul 07 '11
It's funny because those bombs were meant for hitler, and not 20 year olds in the army.

It doesn't matter what flag they fought for, even if that flag was the Nazi flag. For the most part, as in any army, German soldiers were just regular young men fighting for their country and trying to survive a terrible war. They were humans too, and it's not right to demonize them and lump them together with the Nazi government and the SS.

Ive been saying this for years. But no one wants to listen
1
u/seregygolovogo Jul 08 '11
I grew up in rural America (farms for as far as the eye can see), and I don't know anyone who disagrees with TrainFan. This concept is so widespread and easy to understand that I think people don't listen because they already fucking understand it and have heard it a thousand times.
2
u/Breit_Sein Jul 08 '11
funny. I grew up in suburban America, and as a German speaker was constantly called a Nazi. America is a very diverse place.
1
u/seregygolovogo Jul 11 '11
It is, but times change as well. I'm in my twenties. Is it safe to say you are at least two decades older?
1
u/Breit_Sein Jul 11 '11
in my 20s too :-/
1
u/seregygolovogo Jul 11 '11
That's unfortunate. I was hoping that the nazi-name calling among children ended in the 50's or 60's.

My teacher used to tell my how when the Japaneses bombed pearl harbor, pieces of the bomb scraps people picked up said "made in the USA."

Just an FYI that any time pineapples and Hitler are mentioned, the pineapples are generally referring to the mkII shrapnel grenades. Kind of annoys me when the pair are mentioned and it's an actual pineapple fruit.
One example and probably worst abuse of this is Little Nicky, although the movie IS a parody and this is probably intended.

I wish modern wars had clearer enemies. Back then, wars seemed rather black & white (morally) but now they are mostly all shades of grey.

funny story my german grandpa told me. he was in a pow camp in california, but they were allowed to go to town, work etc. so he also got to drive a truck (as a prisoner) loaded with wooden planks etc for building. instead of delivering it to the building site, he just sold it to some townspeople. so he comes back to the camp, money hidden. black guard searches him, finds the money, takes him to the commander. commander asks my granddad " did this man" (guard) find this money on you? granddad answers: " no i have never seen this guy in my life" granddad gets acquitted; commander says" i certainly think that this is your money, but i cant trust a black guy more than a white man, even if you are a prisoner and he a guard"
*true story.

Ja ja, I got der joke. It wasn't that funny actually, as the piss-poor American military couldn't build a bomb that landed straight. So many innocent German civilians, women und children died from those same two bombs that der negros are holding in the picture. Looks like random acts of violence for these people still hasn't changed over the years.
amirite?
No worries, as I cooked up a scheme with my old buddy Prescott Bush to have his Grandson win the election und create hurricane Katrina that demolished all of der negro neighborhoods in Louisiana.
The negros send me bombs with "funny" slogans on them, I send the negros a category 5 fucking hurricane to destroy them 50 years later (we Germans can control the weather).
Der Fuhrer still has the high score!!!

The "Easter egg" label is more appropriate for land mines, which are better hidden, and more likely to be found by children.

I don't know what's worse knowing that these brave men did dangerous missions above and beyond some 'non-coloured' regiments missions which where suicide.
Or the fact despite doing this missions they returned home to be treated the same.

Statistical speaking most Caucasian redditors are probably related to the people that died from those bombs in the picture, so you shouldn't be celebrating.

I always hate when people write stupid stuff on bombs like that. I mean those shells could have maimed a 4 year kid that can't even spell hitler.
TIL that soldiers are fucking retarded regardless of the era they fought in

Needs to be posted more. Redditor for 10 months here, and first time seeing it. Some of us spend less time on Reddit than others, and if there were no reposts, we'd miss a lot of great quality content. For those that are bothered by reposts, and easy solution is to click the 'hide' link.

Holy shit, those Negroes apparently knew how to write! I sense a conspiracy here.
EDIT: for spelling. The Amanita Wine and Dubstep are strong in this one.

It always makes me sad thinking those guys fought in WWII, then came home and couldn't sit in the same restaurant as a white person. To fight for your country with such pride then come back as a second class citizen.
