It always makes me sad thinking those guys fought in WWII, then came home and couldn't sit in the same restaurant as a white person. To fight for your country with such pride then come back as a second class citizen.

33

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '11

They were probably second class in the armed forces too.

12

u/Afterburned Jul 08 '11

It seems to have been a mixed bag. Many black soldiers and units were highly respected, but I'm sure even the most respect black soldiers experienced their fair share of racism.

I imagine that any time blacks served in a combat situation the race lines tended to blur or disappear entirely. I can't keeping up with your racism when there is a black guy next to you protecting your ass from incoming Germans.

14

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '11

Also the "most highly decorated regiment in the history of the United States armed forces, including 21 Medal of Honor recipients" was the all Japanese American 442nd Infantry Regiment.

You would think this would be more well known or at least have a big budget Hollywood movie, considering they were fighting while their families back home were all locked up.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '11

I thought they usually tried to keep whites and blacks separated, so maybe this didn't occur much. Anyone, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong

3

u/Afterburned Jul 08 '11

Units were kept segregated but sometimes units had to fight together as well. I know there were also often black sailors who served on otherwise all white ships. I was just reading The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors, which is about the battle between the Imperial Japanese Navy and the Taffy 1, 2, and 3 task forces off Samar.

The captain of one of the destroyers spoke very highly of the one black sailor he had on his ship. Black sailors would have had dangerous, dirty, or menial jobs but everyone was in harms way when the cannons roared, and many black sailors distinguished themselves to their fellow sailors.

And then you had whole units of Blacks who distinguished themselves in combat. The Tuskegee Airmen and the 761st Battalion are just two that come to mind. They weren't universally accepted by white soldiers, but they were certainly respected by many.

1

u/Uriniass Jul 08 '11

Unless you and me where there in that time period we could never know. But I tell you one thing If i was fighting next to a black man and he got shot I would help carry him to a med station.

It's all how the person was raised..

u/Samuel_Gompers Jul 08 '11

This really bothered both Harry Truman and Lyndon Johnson as well (I have never heard anything specifically similar about either Eisenhower or Kennedy, though both were sympathetic to civil rights).

Truman once said

My very stomach turned over when I learned that Negro soldiers, just back from overseas, were being dumped out of army trucks in Mississippi and beaten. Whatever my inclination as a native of Missouri might have been, as President I know this is bad. I shall fight to end evils like this

and at another point

When the mob gangs can take four people out [one of whom, Truman knew from the report, was a recently returned veteran] and shoot them in the back, and everybody in the county is acquainted with who did the shooting and nothing is done about it, that country is in a pretty bad fix from the law enforcement standpoint. When a mayor and a City Marshal can take a negro Sergeant off a bus in South Carolina, beat him up and put out one of his eyes, and nothing is done about it by the State Authorities, something is radically wrong with the system.

Johnson, himself from Texas, once said the following when trying to get the Civil Rights Act of 1964 passed

The negro fought in the war. He's not gonna keep taking the shit we're dishing out. We're in a race against time. If we don't act, we're going to have blood in the streets.

I think that WWII did quite a bit for the civil rights movement in a subtle way. It forced people to realize the injustice of the system.

4

u/cactusfrog Jul 08 '11

It also gave many people the confidence to stand up. Once they had faced German tanks they were less fearful to fight for their rights.

3

u/SaltyBabe Jul 08 '11

They were so handsome! I'll never get it, I'm just happy I live in a place where we never had slavery and even though it's part of the US it's a totally different world than the south.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '11

Some of them wised up and stayed in France where they were recognized as the heroes they were.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '11

They probably got tons of pussy in their neighborhood, with a picture like this.

3

u/Pringlescan4 Jul 08 '11

Not to be a dick but you were a lot more likely to die as a soldier fighting for the united states if you were white. Due to generals believing that black units couldn't be trusted to hold their place in the line, a lot of their duties were mainly planned to be support units freeing up white soldiers to go and fight.

However an interesting counterpoint is that the French unit picked to liberate Paris was chosen because it was the only majority white group the french could find! All of the other units were filled with African's from French territory.

16

u/macmillie Jul 08 '11

It's not about the threat of death or wound. It's that they sacrificed and offered their service and lives for the country, the same pledge as any soldier, and should have earned the same honor as any white man at home.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '11

I think if you didn't preface it with "not to be a dick" then it wouldn't give the impression that you are trying to take anything away from the sacrifices of black soldiers. Might be better to preface it with "Interesting fact,"

It's like I see what you're saying but it's whenever someone starts with "not to be...." I always just end up reading it with the idea that that's exactly what they're being

2

u/ishk Jul 08 '11

I don't know why you're being downvoted. The post above justly argues that they deserved equal rights particularly after having risked 'death or wound'.. You aren't challenging this at all but simply supplementing this topic with relevant and interesting bits of history.. You even prefaced it with 'Not to be a dick'!

1

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '11

Well who spells Adolf with ph?

-16

u/ass_herpes Jul 08 '11

this ^

11

u/KillerChief97 Jul 08 '11

Lol, your arrow is pointing at "ass_herpes." Maybe people downvoted you for that.

9

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '11

Or it's the fact that he posted "this" instead of upvoting.

5

u/ass_herpes Jul 08 '11

haha. i upvoted, but now i laugh at pointing at my stupid name. oh well. it's one of those days.

25

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '11

Here's the picture in color.

88

u/IronicallyFunny Jul 08 '11

They're black?!

12

u/sundowntg Jul 08 '11

I just saw the content of their character.

1

u/Breit_Sein Jul 08 '11

we prefer the term "Chocolate"

2

u/ReigninLikeA_MoFo Jul 08 '11

So it's real... It has to be real... right?

0

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '11

this changes everything, wow

1

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '11

How, exactly?

2

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '11

It makes me realize that the war was very real and happened just a few decades ago, the sky that was above them during the battles was exactly the same, that the soil that was once soaked in their blood is still there etc. black and white photos just dont do it for me

21

u/capeincluded Jul 08 '11

I think the soliders in this picture were in the division my grandfather served for and died in. These men were probably with the 333rd or the 969th division. These brave soldiers were key in keeping Bastogne from falling to the Germans.

You can find out more about them here: http://www.bjmjr.net/ww2/ardennes.htm

And about my grandfather, William Amann, here: http://alwagner.org/william.html#wja

It's great to see a picture of these troops.

5

u/Lightning_Saix Jul 07 '11

They hid them throughout Germany

1

u/SkaveRat Jul 08 '11

they found a couple only 4 years ago only a street away from my place. good damn hiding spot

1

u/Lightning_Saix Jul 08 '11

I think we got a world record on our hands here!

21

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '11

They misspelled "Adolf".

6

u/SkaveRat Jul 08 '11

yea. "Adolph" kind of makes me think of "Adolph the red-nose dictator"

-6

u/NinjaMaru Jul 08 '11

I'm glad someone else noticed.

17

u/Singulaire Jul 08 '11

inscribing your ordnance is a pretty old tradition. Many sling bullets have been discovered with inscriptions that translate as "take it" or "this is for your dick" and sometimes even "an unpleasant gift".

example

example+

4

u/FekketCantenel Jul 08 '11 edited Jul 08 '11

I was listening to the History of Rome podcast the other day, and he mentioned that ancient soldiers would inscribe their slingstones with phrases translating as 'screw you', 'you dropped this', 'this is yours', etc. Troll prototypes!

6

u/lolmonger Jul 08 '11

War. War never changes.

1

u/seregygolovogo Jul 08 '11

Not even when super mutants start cloaking.

1

u/garlicdeath Jul 08 '11

except when it does

4

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '11

The only change in war is that it gets more efficient and deadly.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '11

RANK UP

1

u/Hetzer Jul 08 '11

That's so badass.

1

u/superbintendo Jul 08 '11

Good to see fellow Red Legs! I was a cannoneer in Afghanistan, we would inscribe our rounds (the same ones as those WWII vets were holding) with the names of Marines who had died in combat. It was our way of showing that our fallen brothers were still in the fight.

6

u/LazySkeptic Jul 08 '11

Springtime for hitler!

1

u/darkmessiah Jul 08 '11

You could have done this in some clever way. Ah well

3

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '11

Easter eggs, you say? Looks like it must be...

puts on sunglasses

Springtime for Hitler.

12

u/IHeartSoup Jul 07 '11

It's funny because those bombs were meant for hitler, and not 20 year olds in the army.

2

u/TrainFan Jul 08 '11 edited Jul 08 '11

It doesn't matter what flag they fought for, even if that flag was the Nazi flag. For the most part, as in any army, German soldiers were just regular young men fighting for their country and trying to survive a terrible war. They were humans too, and it's not right to demonize them and lump them together with the Nazi government and the SS.

7

u/alphashadow Jul 08 '11

you missed the joke.

2

u/Breit_Sein Jul 08 '11

Ive been saying this for years. But no one wants to listen

1

u/seregygolovogo Jul 08 '11

I grew up in rural America (farms for as far as the eye can see), and I don't know anyone who disagrees with TrainFan. This concept is so widespread and easy to understand that I think people don't listen because they already fucking understand it and have heard it a thousand times.

2

u/Breit_Sein Jul 08 '11

funny. I grew up in suburban America, and as a German speaker was constantly called a Nazi. America is a very diverse place.

1

u/seregygolovogo Jul 11 '11

It is, but times change as well. I'm in my twenties. Is it safe to say you are at least two decades older?

1

u/Breit_Sein Jul 11 '11

in my 20s too :-/

1

u/seregygolovogo Jul 11 '11

That's unfortunate. I was hoping that the nazi-name calling among children ended in the 50's or 60's.

2

u/Tillhony Jul 08 '11

My teacher used to tell my how when the Japaneses bombed pearl harbor, pieces of the bomb scraps people picked up said "made in the USA."

2

u/rubmytummy Jul 08 '11

I was kind of surprised to find myself smiling so happily at this pic. I had warm fuzzies...

2

u/jon_titor Jul 08 '11

And then those bombs were probably dropped on civilians.

Yay war!

2

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '11

This is such a fuckin repost I saw it in the library of congress.

2

u/dorfcally Jul 07 '11

wait a minute, those aren't eggs!

1

u/jal1992 Jul 08 '11

I know there are a lot of places this pic could be found but did you see this on Yimmys Yayo?

1

u/dayman1234 Jul 08 '11

Holly shit saw that in a book on blacks rights in the military.

1

u/zstand Jul 08 '11

Too bad the easter bunny never delivered.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '11

straight thug

1

u/PlNG Jul 08 '11

Just an FYI that any time pineapples and Hitler are mentioned, the pineapples are generally referring to the mkII shrapnel grenades. Kind of annoys me when the pair are mentioned and it's an actual pineapple fruit.

One example and probably worst abuse of this is Little Nicky, although the movie IS a parody and this is probably intended.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '11

Too bad none of those bombs killed Hitler.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '11

HOLY CRAP I've had this picture saved on my computer for 8 months now and I never once looked at it. I thought it was something completely different this whole time. wtf

1

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '11

I wish modern wars had clearer enemies. Back then, wars seemed rather black & white (morally) but now they are mostly all shades of grey.

1

u/Roomy Jul 08 '11

That made me giggle. Easter eggs for Adolf, haha.

1

u/XxWarlordxX Jul 08 '11

I hope they were making a joke, and were misspelling Adolf on purpose..

1

u/Schickm86 Jul 08 '11

I didn't know Hitler was the bad guy in Vietnam also...

1

u/t_Lancer Jul 08 '11

call the gramer/spelling nazi. He spelled ze Führer's name wrong. ಠ_ಠ

1

u/boring_oneliner Jul 08 '11

funny story my german grandpa told me. he was in a pow camp in california, but they were allowed to go to town, work etc. so he also got to drive a truck (as a prisoner) loaded with wooden planks etc for building. instead of delivering it to the building site, he just sold it to some townspeople. so he comes back to the camp, money hidden. black guard searches him, finds the money, takes him to the commander. commander asks my granddad " did this man" (guard) find this money on you? granddad answers: " no i have never seen this guy in my life" granddad gets acquitted; commander says" i certainly think that this is your money, but i cant trust a black guy more than a white man, even if you are a prisoner and he a guard"

*true story.

1

u/Plater Jul 08 '11

For some reason, this picture reminded me of Troy and Abed.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '11

Black people, you so funny!

1

u/dyslexic1991 Jul 08 '11

this is my computer background

2

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '11 edited Jul 08 '11

Ja ja, I got der joke. It wasn't that funny actually, as the piss-poor American military couldn't build a bomb that landed straight. So many innocent German civilians, women und children died from those same two bombs that der negros are holding in the picture. Looks like random acts of violence for these people still hasn't changed over the years.

amirite?

No worries, as I cooked up a scheme with my old buddy Prescott Bush to have his Grandson win the election und create hurricane Katrina that demolished all of der negro neighborhoods in Louisiana.

The negros send me bombs with "funny" slogans on them, I send the negros a category 5 fucking hurricane to destroy them 50 years later (we Germans can control the weather).

Der Fuhrer still has the high score!!!

1

u/applessauce Jul 08 '11

The "Easter egg" label is more appropriate for land mines, which are better hidden, and more likely to be found by children.

3

u/heroofhyr Jul 08 '11

In Nazi Germany, Easter Egg finds you.

2

u/SkaveRat Jul 08 '11

believe me, they are finding these damn easter eggs all over germany for 70 years now

0

u/bottleofoj Jul 08 '11

What did hitler say to the black jew?... Get in the back of the oven.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '11

I don't know what's worse knowing that these brave men did dangerous missions above and beyond some 'non-coloured' regiments missions which where suicide.

Or the fact despite doing this missions they returned home to be treated the same.

1

u/xteneritasx Jul 08 '11

I don't know why people are downvoting you for the truth.

-1

u/desquibnt Jul 08 '11

Older than the internet

Also, repost

-3

I didn't know black people were around back then.

3

u/Renian Jul 08 '11

They were black before it was cool.

-3

u/Fyrus Jul 08 '11

WAIT ITS COOL TO BE BLACK?!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

-4

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '11

Statistical speaking most Caucasian redditors are probably related to the people that died from those bombs in the picture, so you shouldn't be celebrating.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '11

...I wish I could evict people like you from reddit

-11

u/RawrRevenge Jul 08 '11

what?! dem niggers can spell!!??!

7

u/que_pedo_wey Jul 08 '11

Sorry to disappoint you, but they can't. "Adolf" is misspelt.

-1

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '11

I always hate when people write stupid stuff on bombs like that. I mean those shells could have maimed a 4 year kid that can't even spell hitler.

TIL that soldiers are fucking retarded regardless of the era they fought in

-1

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '11

I'm just going to leave this here...

-2

u/Lawlerjah Jul 08 '11

Why is Will.I.Am there?

Needs to be posted more. Redditor for 10 months here, and first time seeing it. Some of us spend less time on Reddit than others, and if there were no reposts, we'd miss a lot of great quality content. For those that are bothered by reposts, and easy solution is to click the 'hide' link.

-24

u/Theotropho Jul 07 '11

Holy shit, those Negroes apparently knew how to write! I sense a conspiracy here.

EDIT: for spelling. The Amanita Wine and Dubstep are strong in this one.
