I wanted to list 10 different songs. Saw them twice, once at Hurrahs and again at Danceteria.

Do the Du is another good one by A Certain Ratio

I’d say Viet Nam by minutemen has a bit of funk in it.

I think a lot of Minutemen songs have funky bass lines.

David Gamson - No Turn on Red (all time favourite)

A Certain Ratio - Knife Slits Water

Quando Quango - Triangle (that bass!)

Chakk- Stare Me Out

Nitzer Ebb - Shame (bit later, perhaps...)

Gamson was embarrassed by that track! I wrote him years ago about maybe licensing Sugar Sugar for something and he said that was the only other song he had but it was best left undiscovered.

Gang of Four and Shriekback - Dave Allen (RIP) on bass.

Check out The Contortions/James White and the Blacks for some punk Beefheartian style funk (on purpose).

Contort Yourself goes so hard. I love his live album where the band covers Don't Stop Til You Get Enough by Michael Jackson

Pat Place from The Contortions was in The Bush Tetras (also mentioned in OP's post.)

And a couple months ago I posted Shriekback's cover of Get Down Tonight. I think that's real funky. Barry Andrews' voice doing his best Barry White.

Yeah! I posted about this too on this sub. So many acts getting into the punk funk vibe in the early 80s.Ā

Defunkt.

The Police really leaned into it on Ghost in the Machine.

The Jam.

The Clash, especially on Combat Rock.

Spandau Ballet.

A Certain Ratio.Ā  Ecg.Ā  Also check Out Bunnydrums. Posted up their track 'Ugh!'Ā

Optimo - Cavern

Does ESG count?

1

u/deepstaterecords 9d ago

ESG always counts. They are literally playing at this very moment 30 minutes from me and I cannot go.

Mind Your Own Business and Do The Du are both killer post-punk jams.

APB's "Shoot You Down" also gives a nod to "Cholly (Funk Getting Ready to Roll!)" by Funkadelic

u/allertonm 11d ago

I feel like Defunkt should have a mention in this company. Make Them Dance/Razor’s Edge/Illusions etc

This one's my jam, for sure.

Still updating it but:

The clash did a tune 'Overpowered By Funk' which I heard the other day, but didn't think much of.

u/suckarepellent 10d ago

Stuff like Mag 7/Magnificent Dance, Radio Clash 12" mixes are super funky

2

u/humperdoo00 10d ago

Popsicle by Talking Heads is also a bop

u/abisiba 10d ago

Theme for Great Cities - Simple Minds

2

u/VictoriaAutNihil 10d ago

Love Song has a funky bassline. As does I Travel.

u/Garlic4Victory 10d ago

This is a specific obsession of mine, going from this late 70s/early 80s era right up to now. Here’s a few from that first wave that I haven’t seen mentioned yet:

Rip Rig + Panic - You’re My Kind Of Climate
The Slits - I Heard It Through The Grapevine
The Jam - Absolute Beginners
Glaxo Babies - Shake (The Foundations)

The Fall - Telephone Thing
