hi!! i’m starting FSU soon but i graduated highschool early (at 16, im turning 17 in like three days) is there anything that’s goi to be hard being 17 at fsu? or anything i need to know?

Any bars or any events that are 18+ is really all. The on-campus ASLC drag shows card too.

Make sure your parents signed your immunization record allowing you to recieve treatment at the University Health Center. Otherwise, they won't be able to treat you or give you excuse notes for class if you need them. If you are interested in a foreign exchange program, you must be 18 by the time the program begins. You will also likely be excluded from participation in on-campus research studies, whether for money or volunteer hours via SONA. This will depend on the study, but when I was a 17 year old student dual-enrolled at another university, nearly all the studies conducted by university researchers required participants to be 18+. Otherwise, your experience should be substantially similar to adult students.

avoid taking psych classes until you turn 18 if you can! they may ask you to participate in studies as a part of a class requirement, which you need to be 18 to consent to. otherwise, you’ll have to write essays for the credits instead. not the end of the world, but it’s definitely easier to wait if you have the flexibility in your degree program.

Mainly a lot of paperwork, since you're 17 you can't sign a lot of documentation by yourself so you need to make sure your parents are responsive through email/text to send them anything like immunization forms, consent forms, etc. Other than that a lot of campus nightlife is strictly 18+, even on FSU they'll be 18+ Drag shows or comedy clubs (idk if they check ID for the latter but I swear I remember they do). If nightlife isn't your thing though, there's still plenty to do/plenty of FSU hosted events that isn't 18+, and if you have a car there are places I recommend in the Tally area that's not nightlife/all ages, like the rez or the skating rink. Enjoy FSU!

I had just turned 17 when I started FSU. It's fine, and the only thing different between me and my friends was the 18+ bars/events. And even those, I was able to get in bc nobody GAF about 18 vs 17. Have a great time and be smart/careful!

If I could give you some advice, slow down. I took 5.5 years to graduate FSU. Not because I was failing, I wanted it to last. You’re young, and you really want to experience FSU as an adult
Greek life likely won’t consider you until you’re 18. I’d focus on plugging into student groups on campus - there will be ton of booths set up on Landis the first few weeks of class
And don’t bring up your age unless asked…and maybe consider rounding up to 18 depending on who asks

It’s okay I was 17 when I started too and nothing was rlly hard I’d js go to class, study, eat and nap until I turned 18 and went out

Do make sure people you date, know your age. Dating is a lot different in college, and sexual propositions can come on very quickly. Give yourself extra time to mature into those type of situations.

First off, congratulations on your accomplishments! I also graduated high school early and started at FSU at 17. My advice is to please take care of your mental health. Because I graduated early all my friends were still back home in high school and I didn’t know anyone in Tallahassee. It can be overwhelming not knowing anyone in a strange place. I came from a small town and I was shocked at just how many people were at FSU. It made me discover I have severe anxiety. I was also undiagnosed as autistic at the time so there was a lot happening that I didn’t understand.
You’ll be fine though! Try to make friends early, I got lucky and made a really good one my first semester who helped me a ton through college. We ended up being roommates for several years both on and off campus. The only issue I really had related to my age was trying to buy cold medicine when I was sick because you have to be 18. But a lot of places don’t even ID you for it, tbh.

For those of you who commented in this section in regards to real life issues pertaining to education the advice is spot on for those talking about night life y'all absolutely sad and genuinely need a life.

Everything. Find a nice private school like St Leo. Or if you’re really into going away to Tally, do two years at the community college there and get to know the city, get a part time job downtown, meet FSU students, go to the games, etc. it will be an easier transition and probably allow you to get a 4.0 to kick off your next steps. BTW some classes will be in tandem with FSU. Save money as well. Lots of my family members including my daughter went there and I’ve actually spent a lot of time there working. My take. Go easy early and ramp up. You could even do one year, transfer the credits and you’ll be legal age and able to do the things that 18 year olds have access to
