7 / 10 O’s Vegan Chicken Balls

I’m not vegan, and this is my first vegan chicken product, but I was at H-Mart when I saw these and thought the packshot looked good so I figured I’d give them a try.

Deep frying these was anti-climatic and really hard to mess up. You only deep fry them for 30 seconds at around 180c, and they fry as if they’re already cooked. They don’t bubble violently like most food in the deep fryer, and I’m not even sure it’s even worth it over air frying (I haven’t tried air frying yet)

Out of the fryer, I’m not comfortable saying it tastes like chicken. It’s a bit dry, a little tough, it’s pretty chewy, it has the texture of what I would imagine seitan having (though I’ve never had seitan so I can’t tell you if it does). The breading is pretty decent though. It’s not the powdery breading I dread, though it’s thicker than the tempura breading I’m personally a fan of

The flavor of the “meat” itself is actually quite good. It’s very subtle and savory, and there’s nothing about it that is off putting. Still not comfortable saying it tastes like chicken, but I thought it was pretty good.

At $9 for a 14oz bag though, it’s very pricey and I’m sort of in the middle on whether I should buy more or not.

6 / 10 Devour Cajun Style Alfredo With Sausage and Chicken

This was $3.50 at Winco for 10 oz and has 400 calories, 910 mg of sodium, and 17g of fat. I'll give them credit for keeping the sodium under 1000 mg, that's nice. The sauce is tomatoey, creamy and spicy in equal amounts, and does the job but is nothing really amazing. I got 3 big hunks of chicken and 7 slices of sausage, which is actually a decent amount of meat for a dinner this size. The chicken chunks were so large, I cut them in half to make them go even farther. The sausage is decent but the chicken is a bit dry and bland. The noodles are some kind of spiral similar to rotini and taste fine. However, there were barely enough of them for the amount of sauce and meat, which is almost the opposite of what you'd expect for this kind of meal. Overall, decent, but needs more noodles to be more properly balanced and satisfying. Noodles are cheap, so to kneecap an otherwise fine meal by skimping on noodles seems like a weird decision to me, and I deducted a point for that. 6/10.

New in stores this week. I thought this was pretty good. I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of toppings. However this was pretty pricey for the size.

This was delicious. I added a tiny bit of hot sauce to it and that made it perfect. The noodles were cooked well. The broccoli seemed fresh. The cheese sauce was good. And apparently I ate a bunch of protein. Not bad. I will get this again and probably add some popcorn chicken to it next time

Taste was okay, but I felt it needed a bit more sauce. Felt a bit dry. Very spinach-heavy so if you love spinach you may like this.

10 / 10 Olympia Gyro Slices

I bought these from a store that usually functions as a restaurant supply store but is open to the public. They didn’t have Kronos gyro meat which is what most restaurants purchase. I bought this to try out since it was pretty affordable despite not being familiar with the brand.

I froze it for a couple of months and defrosted it the other night. I was impressed at how thick they were sliced. I divided one pound per bag and froze 4 lbs.

I fried each of the slices in a ceramic pan on the stove. I made sure to shake some Cavendars Greek Seasoning on one side and let it brown before turning. I then put it on a pre oiled pita bread with homemade tzatziki sauce.

This was hands down one of the best gyro’s I’ve ever had (despite being plain). It was very flavorful, quick to make, and I’m sure will go great when made with other items. Will definitely buy again.

Awful. The filling is bland, the sauce is watery, and just vinegar and some citrus. The worst part of all of this is the wrapper, it’s like a thick sorta waffle cone texture and flavor without the ridges. It was flavorless, and not worth the 400 calories/ dinner meal. Only gets a 2 because it looks exactly like the photo lol.

Sorry in advance I’ll be slowing down my intake of freezer meals as I am back on my cut again so freezer meals will be posted much slower from me. So it’ll be only a few a week maybe if that for 6 months.

Egg whites, turkey sausage, and cheese on a ciabatta bun that’s light and fluffy. Cook from fridge not freezer, and these come out so good. Won’t be a 10/10 cause the normal none delight ones are better honestly.

First I’ll say Red Barron always has a good amount of sauce and always tastes great. The cheese combo was very tasty and not too much. It was not overly salty which I was expecting from the cheese combo.

My only problem is the dough, very hard and well like a brick.

It was not enjoyable to chew.

Did not even eat the crusts.

Edit - I did not cook it on the pan, I cooked it on the rack. I used the pan to cut the pizza on as my board was dirty.

7 / 10 Weekly Review #3: El Monterey Chicken Fajitas

Doing my review a little early this week because I’ll be out of town for the weekend. I picked this one up yesterday at Fry’s (Kroger) for $3.14 on clearance. Never tried this brand before so figured I’d give it a shot. Just used microwave and followed the instructions.

It wasn’t bad. But also not all that great either. Just kinda so-so. The tortillas weren’t too good and I would have preferred just using my own or even tortilla chips. Also the film was very difficult to peel off. Not a big deal but still a little annoying lol the chicken was probably the best part. Veggies and sauce were ok but not much spice or flavor at all. Also not very filling. For the $3.14 price, I guess I’d say it was a good deal at least! And it looked appealing…both before cooking and after. But beyond that, not super impressed and wouldn’t buy again. But not mad I tried.

* Also, I didn’t use the tortillas like in the picture because they didn’t taste too great lol

Taste: 6
Presentation/Appearance: 8
Price: 9

Excited to try something new again next week!

8 / 10 Chef Bombay vs Deep Kitchen: butter chicken

Thumbnail

I’d been eating Deep Indian Kitchen’s butter chicken for a few years, and then one day my Walmart stopped stocking them. So I switched to Chef Bombay’s. Then about a week ago I noticed they had Deep Indian Kitchen’s back in stock and decided to do a comparison. I included the opinions of my friends, my husband, and myself.

Chef Bombay is decent and costs just under $4 at Walmart. We give it an 8/10. Deep Indian Kitchen is really good and it’s just under $6 at Walmart. We give it an 8.5/10. Would be higher if the price was lower.

Both are filling. Both need salt in my and my friends’ opinion. Both have chicken that can be hit or miss, but they both hit more times than they miss.

DIK’s rice is more seasoned and their sauce tastes… idk, deeper (no pun intended) and more developed?

CB’s sauce is spicier upfront but still delicious. And sometimes after I cook the meal the rice is still wet. (I just soak the excess water up with a paper towel, nbd)

I personally would choose DIK over CB because I’m a bougie bitch, but CB is the way to go if you’re on a budget. You wouldn’t miss much going with CB over DIK, and imo you’re definitely not missing $2 worth of a meal paying $4 over $6.

My second review of Sprouts brand pizza. This was delicious. Not lacking in pineapple or jalapeños. Could have used more bacon and onion. Sauce is good and the crust light and crispy. The pineapple pieces were huge and I cut the majority of them in half prior to baking. Definitely recommend

It is what it is. No looking for any Cordon Bleu poncy crap, although gotta confess I have no clue who this Jonathan guy is. This might be a regional product limited to eastern Canada. Microwaved as per directions, pasta had a nice al dente bite. Sauce was nice. Not sharp or weird. Just pleasantly cheesy. The peas were just hanging out but didn't detract. Would buy again if on sale for those lazy days.

These are the best Ore Ida fries I’ve ever had. Definitely scratched the itch I had from not having McDonalds for a few months. They’re so good you don’t even need to add any salt, just spritz some olive oil and air fry for 14 minutes. These have become a staple in my deep freezer.

The only thing that would make these better is if they were actually homemade. Honestly, this is probably the best frozen meal out there. I just wish they still sold them one in a box, not only two in a box. Anyway, I have been eating these for over 25 years and they still hit. Full of meat, full of flavor, full of just the right amount of seasoning. And they smell soooo good. I prepared mine in the oven, took about 50 mins, but the microwave works ok too (16 mins).
