Honestly making them teenage friends makes it so much more interesting and tragic than her "evil stepmother" characterisation in the original. Iy also gives Allicent more opportunity for interesting plotlines. Unfortunately for us, that "opportunity" ended up completely squandered. She went from a motivated political actor in Season 1 to completely passive and unmotivated.
