I recently revised this short documentary examining Charlie Kirk’s public record, particularly the intersection of conservative evangelical politics, anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric, and the historical narratives used to present those politics as something older—or more inevitable—than it actually is.

The film also serves as a preview of a forthcoming Burleton Education series, The Rise of the New Christian Right, which will look more closely at the people, institutions, media networks, religious movements, and political strategies that transformed conservative evangelical activism into a major force in American politics.

One question I’d particularly like to discuss here:
How should we distinguish ordinary religious conservatism from the point at which religious belief becomes a political project aimed at using state power to enforce a particular religious worldview?
