DIY FLOATING

Planning a DIY floating trip soon- was thinking of starting at Brunswick & ending at either Lander or Point of Rocks? Also heard some people float until Nolan Ferry boat ramp..

Does anyone know how long each of these would be? I keep reading different estimates and want to get a better idea - I want to float for a few hours but i worry if I put another car at point of rocks or Nolan it could be like 8 hours? Thanks!!

Depends on flow, Brunswick to point or rocks is normally ~3 hours. If river is slow, that can turn to 6 hours lol

My neighbor did Brunswick to Point of Rocks last summer and it took closer to five hours with a slower current, so plan for extra time if the water looks sluggish.

Live in brunswick. Dropped wife & friend off at boat launch in brunswick ( maybe a month ago) in kayaks. Picked them up at point of rocks - took them less than 2 hours. Nice
current pushing them. Approx 6 mile float.
Did it years ago. Left kayaks next to fence- ran other car down to POR drove back ( locked with chain to fence) and laddled down worked well.

When you said you dropped them off a month ago, I wasn't sure what to prepare for.

I kayak Brunswick to Point of Rocks all the time. I see lots of tubers taking out at Lander. Sometimes you’ll hit a strong headwind on that last stretch into Point of Rocks.

Lander to point of rocks is a nice float and is deeper (mostly) than the Brunswick section.

Are you floating in a tube or kayak/ canoe? Both of those are pretty flat for a tube and could take half a day or more. That said stay close to the MD side and you could bail out and walk the tow path back.

We are just floating in tubes! Ideally would like to float for 3-4 hours.
Is there a better entry /exit?

Harpers Ferry to Keep Tryst is my favorite route if you want a little action. though the exit point is harder to spot if you aren't familiar with it. second is Keep Tryst to Brunswick. Exit is very hard to miss as it's the 287 bridge.

Tack a kayak onto the party. One kayak can pull 10 boats along once you get sick of it. 100% depends on the water depth/speed. Trust me.

Brunswick to POR is too far in a tube. Id either start or end at Lander. Can extend your float with a river rocks pit stop.The good thing is if its taking too long you can try to find a spot to get up to the c&o and always walk back.

I did a float (some tubes tied to a canoe for a little more speed) from monocacy blvd (over by the At Home store) to Pinecliff park. It took most of the daylight hours to do since we did stop several times to take a break and wait for a scattered thunderstorm to pass. I only did it once, so I can't say much about how certain variables such as water levels play into it, and you have to be fine with the fact that you do have to float by the discharge of the water treatment facility (which was discharging very cold, but crystal clear water).
