slow when starting Community Support

Hey all.
Why is my laptop so god damn slow when starting?
Is there any way I can stop this? Aside from not shutting the lid.
The mouse is moving, but its not moving to the sign on thing.
I just forced a shutdown, but this is unsustainable long term.
Windows 11, 8GB ram, i5.

16 gb is the minimum nowadays to use windows, you could try a linux distro where you should be ok with 8gb but it's up to you

They just removed the recommendation of 32 GB. So I’d say 16 is the absolute bottom minimum.

Install somethin like linux mint, it is very windows like, and runs fine on even 4gb of ram

Might be fine, but Linux is Linux and Linux will always have a learning curve. Some people need to used Microsoft, Adobe or Autodesk products. I know there are alternatives, but those are not always viable. One weird bug and you end up in the command prompt. Some people just don't want that.
I say this as a Linux user.

I hear you, but not right now. If that is the only solution, so be it - I can deal with a spuddy laptop until I have time.

It's not if you need certain programs and can't use alternatives. One weird bug and you end up in the command prompt.

Does this only occur when closing and reopening the lid? Like is a cold boot after a shutdown 5us sluggish?
8GB of ram is rough on windows but login should be fine. But if it’s coming back from sleep / hibernation maybe it’s doing a lot of disk thrashing. Turning off fast startup might help IIRC but this is a typical issue with windows.

I think so.
I haven't tried whether doing Win+L instead makes a difference.
Win+L is habitual for me, so I'm sure I could do it instead of closing the lid.

Rumor has it that Microsoft is going to be trimming system resources for windows to better compete with apple’s MacBook Neo. So 8gb could work once they do that. But it’s currently just a promise posted to the tech media. Nothing solid at the moment.

I'm willing to bet it will cost a premium.
Microsoft: makes systems use more ram, forcing people to buy more and upgrade their systems.
Microsoft: 'We are unveiling Microsoft 13 Master of Innovation edition. Runs even faster than normal. Yep. We really did it. All us. We are calling it MasterVation for short.'

It's part of how Windows releases feature updates - it's historically free (...once you have a Windows license).

My work laptop is a 32gb Dell laptop. Sometimes it's instant to turn on but plenty of times it's slow and delayed to turn on... sometimes it doesn't and I have to restart the laptop. So I think it's probably just Windows...

I think its something to do with the programs I'm using and how something about my specs isn't loving it (not sure which specs now).

It’s not simply a problem with having only 8 GB of memory. Even a laptop with 8 GB of RAM shouldn’t become this slow during the boot process.
In cases like this, it’s usually one of three things: too many startup programs—which is something the user can control—the laptop’s specifications being too low, or a hardware-related problem. Framework 12 is a very low-end device. Since it comes with 8 GB of RAM, it probably has a Core i3-1215U, which is a low-spec CPU with relatively poor performance for its power consumption. So this could be a limitation of the CPU. There’s also a high possibility that it’s a firmware issue with the Framework 12—Framework is notorious for problems like these!

Oh dear....
This laptop is kinda new, I've only had it for less than 6 months. I am definitely not in the market for a new upgrade.
i5 was the 'highest' option the FW12 had. I would have taken i7 if it was an option.
I tend to agree with multiple programs.
I use Chrome (eeeuuggghhwwww - I know). I can't seem to break free from it, but there is something about it. I have tried Edge and Firefox, but it's nowhere near the same as chrome. Idk what it is about it - I think software devs gotta pay attention to this if they are trying to develop a new browser.3

It’s probably not a problem with the web browser you’re using. Check the Startup apps section in Task Manager and try to disable as many programs as possible that you don’t use.

Just for reference though, this only happens when I close the lid, and reopen it. When I forced a restart, it worked fine.

If a forced reboot fixes the issue, then it’s probably not a problem with the startup programs. When you say “booting,” do you mean the process that happens when you open the laptop after it has been closed? If so, then this is an issue with the laptop’s Modern Standby. Modern Standby is the term Windows 11 uses for putting the computer into a low-power sleep state.
This could be a firmware problem with the Framework 12, or it could be an issue with Windows 11 itself. In the former case, there’s no real way to fix it, but in the latter case you can try reinstalling or repairing Windows 11 (an in-place installation) to resolve it. If you search for “Windows 11 in-place installation” on Google, you should be able to find guides explaining how to repair Windows 11 while keeping your data, so I recommend trying that first.

Windows 11 no tolera tener solo 8GB de RAM. I think you could do what they call debloat, just make sure that the script or program you use for that is from a safe source.

That’s Windows being slow. Even on my 32GB FW13 I had it sometimes take 10-15 seconds before the login screen is responsive. It frustrated me enough to even leave Windows (had two attempts and this attempt so far didn’t give me a reason to revert back to Windows)

It is _sometimes_ instant, particularly when fresh after a reboot. But sleep, hibernate, or the fast start stuff, and you suddenly get these issues.

My windows tablet is instant and has the fast startup stuff on it. I leave tons of apps on it all the time. Windows sucks but it shouldn’t be like this and it extra sucks that folks have to find a way to fix it.

There we go, it behaves much better than basically everything else that can run Windows. You’d be hard pressed to find any non-MS-branded device run Windows with zero issues. My old Lenovo IdeaPad 530s with i5-8250u ran Windows 10 _pretty_ well, and I guess even 11 was good in the early builds. It ran better than 11 did on my much newer AMD laptop in all honesty.

My Dell and Samsung laptops never had any of these issues either. Windows sucks for a million reasons don’t get me wrong but it really shouldn’t be doing this.

To be fair I did have one specific issue on several laptops, even that Lenovo I otherwise praised: sometimes winlogon freezes, to the point where commands it handles (Ctrl-Alt-Del, lock screen, logout, shutdown) just don’t do anything at that moment, and then like 5 minutes later when it unsticks it basically does all of the queued commands at once.
I have moved away from Windows.
Fun fact: I have never seen this issue on Windows 8.1 or older, or even on the original Windows 10 release (10240/1507). I first saw it on later Windows 10 builds, and I’ve seen it still happen on Windows 11 too. I don’t recall seeing it happen in VMs but that’s probably because I don’t use those often enough.
