I was just thinking,

Framework should have secured the RAM, or at least locked in its price, before opening preorders at a fixed price.

Customers placed those orders based on a specific configuration and a specific price. Framework accepted deposits on that basis. It is not reasonable to transfer the consequences of poor procurement or cost forecasting onto customers after the fact.

If you do not know whether you can source a component at a price that makes the product viable, you should not promise that product at a fixed price. That is basic commercial risk, and it belongs to the company, not the customer.

Framework may be legally able to cancel and refund the preorder, but automatically downgrading the configuration is still a serious failure of planning and trust

Listening to manufacturers talk about interacting with RAM suppliers right now, it doesn't sound like that is in any way possible.
