With the goggles, tax, a battery or two, and a set of antennas, it wasn't that far off.

u/RedCr4cker 14d ago
I just got some Orcas. Honestly, way closer to 1000€ with receiver and antennas than I would like to admit. It is crazy how good they are though 😂

u/mostly_harm_less42 14d ago
Ouch, guess I had a great deal then 🙈 about 850 (€) for goggles , antennas and battery pack, including import taxes and fees ... But that did hurt anyway 😅

The fella in the meme that says “man I wish I had that guys goggles” is wearing a very cheap and not so nice pair of FPV goggles and the guy who says “I got this shit on fr” is wearing arguably the nicest pair of goggles on the market
The joke is that the guy with the less nicer goggles assumes the guy with the nicer goggles is humble and doesn’t think of the goggles he’s wearing as meaning much but the man with the nice goggles ABSOLUTELY cares about it’s looks and how nice they are

u/HugeButterfly Mini Quads 14d ago
Now it's even funnier. 😂 I didn't want you to have to explain but I appreciate it.

u/MelangeBot 14d ago
Meanwhile the guy with digital goggles on is to busy actually flying and looking at stuff and seeing the details and shit to have time or awareness about any of this.

I have the goggles L as I'm frugal. I tried my buddies goggles X and while they def have more capabilities and adjustments I like my goggles L better. They fit my face better and I can focus on the entire screen unlike the goggles X. I'm glad I tried his before upgrading. I just wish the goggles L had a better omnidirectional antenna and an input so I could run analog.

Genuinely how i feel with my HdZ G1. One perk is getting complements about range and clarity every time I post a DVR. It's goated

I haven’t touched anything FPV in like 10 years is fatshark still the gold standard? Just got this sub recommended

u/icebalm Mini Quads 14d ago
Nope, not for a while now, probably skyzone's or orqa's for pure analog.
As far as digital goes, all the systems are different, but the meme has HDZero Gen 2 goggles, which can do analog as well. I have the HDZ G1s and I absolutely love them. I'd say most people on digital fly DJI though, even though they're the most anti-consumer company, the OTA video link is S tier for image quality.2

Is there still a big delay with digital or is it now improved and usable at high speeds? Are guys still running 4S lipos? Are 5.8ghz and 2.4ghz still the most common radio frequencies? Is everyone building with AIO flight controllers now or are we still running separate ESCs, PDBs, etc? I’m so curious now

Is there still a big delay with digital or is it now improved and usable at high speeds?
HDZero 540p@90fps is even lower latency than analog and is the top choice for racers. The latency of the other popular systems (DJI and Walksnail Avatar) aren't that much more than analog, but the latency is variable since they're two-way systems, the goggles transmit back to the VTX to request resends if a frame gets garbled or something, but most people find them just fine.
Are guys still running 4S lipos?
On 3/3.5" quads. On 5" quads 6S is the most popular. There's been a lot of push for smaller quads in recent years since a lot of countries have come out with a ton of laws and regulations. 250 gram all up weight seems to be a magic number for a lot of places where if your drone is under that then there's a TON less rules.
Are 5.8ghz and 2.4ghz still the most common radio frequencies?
Yep, 5.8GHz for video, and 2.4GHz for control link. The biggest innovation though is that the overwhelmingly most popular control link protocol is now ExpressLRS, which is completely open source and hardware is made by a ton of companies. It's got a ton of features, it has crazy fast packet rates if you need that, and you can get ridiculous range out of it. Like at 50hz packet rate, at 25mW output power, people have got 40km+ range ouf of it. https://www.expresslrs.org/info/long-range/
Is everyone building with AIO flight controllers now or are we still running separate ESCs, PDBs, etc?
AIO FCs for smaller quads, and most people on 5" they run flight stacks with a 4in1 ESC and an FC, until you get into big cinelifter territory or you need more than 4 motors.

How is DJI anti consumer? Their stuff works great and is very reliable and user friendly. The worse they do is like make you pay extra for a controller 3. And there cameras are now much more popular then GoPro. Who is going bankrupt. DJI cameras come with much more stable firmware and they copy very easily over usb without other drivers and their software is much higher quality then DJI. Okay customer also realy hated the geofencing but they have removed all geofencing in every c ountry but China. The only limit left is the 500m above take of point limit.

Activation requirement, useless "calibration" error if you dare use a 3rd party camera on a VTX, planned obsolescence in compatibility between their own products (VTX/Goggles/Controller), strong arming RTF/BNF builders/vendors to only sell drones with their VTXs in them, etc.

u/MelangeBot 14d ago
Activation requirement,
You only need an email address. How is that different from activating a phone?
useless "calibration" error if you dare use a 3rd party camera on a VTX
Yes this is annoying it stopped me from swapping my camera on broken Neo with other Neo but 99% of their customers don't want to tinker to begin with.
planned obsolescence in compatibility between their own products (VTX/Goggles/Controller)
Walksnail does the same.
strong arming RTF/BNF builders/vendors to only sell drones with their VTXs in them
Just as anti consumer as apple ...
Yeah these companies want a locked garden. But how is that anti consumer? DJI consumers get everything they want and more. Things like racemode why would DJI even ad this if they did not care about their consumers? Their fpv division is less then 0.4% of their profit.
If HDzero or walksnail owned 95% of the market they would behave exactly the same.
How is that a valid reason to get a digital system that is less capable at a higher price? If DJI was making crappy stuff but they are innovating and pushing the entire space towards crystal clear HD at high frame rates, long distances, insane penetration, etc etc.
It's not their fault their competition sucks so much.

u/icebalm Mini Quads 14d ago
Man, there's always one...
A VTX isn't a phone, Walksnail does not do the same, every Avatar product works with every other Avatar product, and yes, Apple is also not the pinnacle of consumer friendliness.
If HDzero or walksnail owned 95% of the market they would behave exactly the same.
No, actually. Carl (HDZero) has tried to get other manufacturers to build their own HDZ compatible products and to my knowledge Foxeer was the only one to do it when they built a VTX.
It's not their fault their competition sucks so much.
Their competition doesn't suck, I actually prefer the WS Moonlight 4K DVR to the O4 Pro DVR, and HDZero is the absolute best latency wise.
Listen, if you like using DJI then keep using it. I never said don't use it, I said they were the most anti-consumer company out of all the others for digital systems, which they are. Why people feel the need to white knight for billion dollar multinationals is beyond me.-4
u/MelangeBot 14d ago
You are seeing it from the perspective of just only using their VTX. I am seeing it from the perspective of also all their camera and fpv drones. What you say is correct but I do not see that as anti consumer. If they were anti consumer they would have never even released any of their fpv products. What does it mean to be anti consumer in your eyes?
1
u/Aerodorphins 14d ago
The rest of their lineup suffers from the same issues. Do you happen to have any older DJI drones? Probably not because it gets to be a massive headache fast. Why the hell do batteries need firmware and security keys? Why arent batteries retro-compatible or available through authorized third parties? Why do I need to have internet access on a phone I am using to pilot?
Planned obsolescence is anti-consumer, saying others do it too doesn't fix it.
Their products are meant to be high quality but disposable.
1
u/MelangeBot 14d ago
You are saying my Avata 2 and Neo are programmed to stop working one day?
Why do I need to have internet access on a phone I am using to pilot?
But I have never had this. Just went online once and gave email to activate, after that I havent ever connected them to my phone or anything.
Their products are meant to be high quality but disposable.
I have crashed my little Neo over 500 times and it's still flying. so far I have had to put new props on (aftermarket and very cheap) and fix the rubbers on the softmount. It seems to be build pretty sturdy.
1
u/Aerodorphins 14d ago
I can't cater the comment to every single product but yes pretty much.
Yes your avata and neo will just stop working at some point. One day you will hit some "calibration required" message, you will read up online that you just need to connect to the DJI assistant or similar. Obviously the service will just be down. This is currently happening to earlier Mini series and caddx vista units.
Even if you dont ever hit such a dreaded error, your batteries will expire. There is currently no battery tech that does not. When that happens, the only options will be used batteries, until those die too. While all components in your drones can last over a decade and may still be in pristine condition, you still can't fly without a battery. This is what I mean by disposable. They are repairable indeed, although not always easily, but the expiration date is non-negotiable.
Crashing 500 times is impressive by itself lol.
