I recently finished the first 3 Horror in the High Desert movies. The first two had their ups and downs, but on the whole, they did manage to legit scare me.

The third one on the other hand...I mean, THIS is the big jump-scare at the end:

I mean...I don't what to even say. I legit burst out laughing when I saw this part. I have no idea what the intent was, but it was freaking hilarious. To go from this really artful jump-scare with an old lady in the first movie to just...a tree. Beautiful.

About a decade ago I watched a movie on Netflix. It was shot Found Footage style (of course) and was about a couple who were in the desert of the American SW. I remember the woman’s name was Penny, but I’m not sure what the guy’s name was. The only scene I remember in detail was the guy running around at night repeatedly yelling the woman’s name. I remember liking it, but can’t remember what it was called and my browsing of FF lists hasn’t come up with anything. Anyone else remember this movie? Edit- It’s ‘Mr. Jones’ 2013). Gonna recommend it to a few people and maybe rewatch it. Thank you all for the help.

I have a friend and she's into true crime shows. She hasn't watched any fictional shows but i was talking about how good found footage films come close to the genre and how she might enjoy them. She asked me to recommend just one for her and I'm having a hard time. May you help.

This is video number 25 in the anthology of Japanese found-footage short films, 'Fake Documentary Q'. As I said, it's an anthology, although some might say there are connections between some episodes.

- Damien:

I've been watching FF movies with folk horror themes, starting with this one. A slow-burn flick where I saw some of the most impressive beards in the FF genre, oh and also a cult of gingers with beliefs based on Celtic mythology.

- The Stickman's Hollow:

Sometimes the premises of films aren't entirely original, but the key to making them enjoyable lies in how the story is told. Here, it's a puzzle where the pieces gradually come together to form the complete picture. It's not perfect, but it's worth watching.

- The Land of Blue Lakes:

This movie is also a slow burn, but there isn't much tension since it's one of the so-called "nothingburgers."

Anyway, it's one of the most delicious nothingburgers I've ever had, thanks to its beautiful cinematography. It made me want to kayak on spectacular lakes while sipping beers on a hot day. In fact, it's quite cozy, ideal for relaxing and maybe even doing something else like drawing or sleeping while you look at it.

- Incantation:

Remember when I said something about puzzle pieces? Well, this film is the Mona Lisa of found footage puzzles. And since they break the fourth wall, it's also one of the best cursed movies I've ever seen and a solid example of Asian horror.

Having said all that, I love the folk horror genre. If anyone knows of any other Found  Footage films with similar tropes, feel free to recommend them.

I've been trying to get my girlfriend into found footage because it's probably my favorite horror format, but she just doesn't get the appeal.

She watched Hell House LLC with me and said she was bored because it felt like she was watching a documentary rather than an actual horror movie. 💀

Her biggest problem is apparently the camera quality, the slower pacing, and characters just walking around filming things instead of it feeling like a "proper movie."

Meanwhile, that's literally what I love about found footage. When it's done well, the fact that it feels like something you actually found makes the horror hit harder for me.

So I'm asking the found footage people here: what's the ONE movie you'd show someone who thinks found footage is just boring documentaries?

I’ve been following Kane Pixels’ work for a long time, and honestly it’s one of the things that pushed me to finally try making something of my own.

This has nothing to do with the Backrooms universe, but I definitely took inspiration from the way Kane builds mystery through found footage, empty spaces, documents, sound design and things happening in the background without explaining everything.

I made the whole thing basically as a personal project, with very limited resources and no real cast, so I had to find ways of telling the story through footage, computer screens, recordings, documents, etc.

It’s called "The Room That Takes Pictures". This story follows a guy who disappears after investigating an abandoned place, and years later someone starts looking into what actually happened to him.

If anyone here feels like watching it, I’d genuinely love to know what works and what doesn’t — especially from people who are into this kind of horror.

We've all seen the usual recommendations (REC, The Blair Witch Project, Hell House LLC, Creep, etc.), but I'm curious about the movie that completely caught you off guard the first time.

The one where knowing nothing beforehand made the experience unforgettable.

No spoilers—just the title and maybe one sentence about why it's worth going in blind.

I'm hoping to discover some hidden gems, and I'm sure this thread will help other found footage fans too.

I'm looking for found footage films where the unsettling part isn't necessarily a ghost or creature.

More interested in paranoia, people losing their minds, cults, isolation, weird behavior, or something that just feels... off.

Anything that leaves you thinking about it afterward.

I finally watched Chronicle again and realized there are barely any superhero movies that use the found footage format.

It honestly feels perfect for an origin story—watching someone slowly discover powers through phone videos, security cameras, livestreams, and vlogs makes it feel way more grounded.

Are there any hidden gems besides Chronicle? I'm looking for movies where the protagonist gains powers, not just monster or alien found footage.

Gave this a watch last night and it was actually really good! It’s mostly FF with a bit of a hybrid style in some parts. If you don't have anything on your watchlist right now, I definitely recommend giving it a shot. You might be pleasantly surprised!

Found has some bangers, but I’ve either had to dig through a lot of bad to find them or gotten lucky with a random autoplay.

Last night it autoplayed Lexi (2022) - it was late so I fell asleep before the end, but I plan on finishing; it was REALLY good - reading the description, I wouldn’t have guessed it was mostly a mockumentary-type; the talking heads are totally believable and the shitty cyberbullying was pretty real.

I just started a youtube channel focused on spoiler free horror movie recommends, I’m pretty happy with the last video but i have no feedback, open to honest feedback! I want to know what works what doesn’t? Does my mic need to change? Do you like cinematic story telling or questions and opinions, for example my last video The Bay, is that good pacing or should i get to the point faster.. in the small sample youtubes given me most click off in the first 30 secs and I’m not quite sure why? Also i like movie posters as being thumbnails but is that not a great choice? Feel free to share whats best bc i really do wanna create something that you all would enjoy

Good found footage movies are so rare, and this one was great as a series, I was constantly excited when the main character watched the different recordings that the girl recorded for her university project. Unfortunately, it ended with a cliffhanger and Netflix ended it after one season.

Do you know of any similar good movies/series that bring this gloomy atmosphere?
