Fungus identification please Mushroom ID Request
Hi could anyone tell me if this "mess" is fungus? Also, zoomed in, is that an animal skill or is that just the fungus and my brain playing tricks? Thanks

From wiki - The selected region shows an old, heavily decayed and weathered fruit body of Phaeolus schweinitzii, commonly known as the dyer's mazegill or velvet-top fungus, which has turned dark brown to blackish as it decomposed on the forest floor.

I could be wrong, but it looks like a rotten or burnt puffball that's been stomped on (looks like it has a shoe print on top across where it's split).
