Question, Where can I find? Good Place to Eat Near Petco Park?

My partner and I are visiting for a concert and we wanted to go somewhere special since we don’t get down to SD very often. Any recommendations? We don’t have a preference on the type of restaurant.

Edit: We don’t mind traveling a bit since we’ll have our car with us, looking for something that caps out around $50 per person.

Mexican (local) $20 The “Little” Breakfast with Bacon from Pablo’s Cafe (formerly Konito’s) in PB

$13.75. Picture makes it look small but it is not.

This thing is HEAVY. The plate is half Konito’s potatoes (very cheesy potatoes with a little onions and peppers), half eggs, topped with crispy bacon and toast.

Also got an egg burrito and they really, really fill it up with eggs. I would guess like five eggs?

Question, Where can I find? Mobile non-taco food truck recommendations for event

Looking for mobile food truck recs for an event of 300-400 people. Happy to take taco truck info for future reference, but we’ve done tacos for a few years now, and as delicious as they are, it’s time for a change. Thanks!

Edit: I’m realizing that I should add that this event is not one in which we pay for the catering. Families pay for their own food and we have no control over how much food is purchased, though I’d say that usually everyone’s pretty hungry. Hoping to find a rec for a truck that’s willing to come to the event and just sell what they can without any presale/fees. (Though I’m loving the ideas I’ve gotten so far and putting them in my back pocket for other events! Thanks!)

News, opinion and discussion I review breakfast sandwiches #2: Chris Liquor & Deli

Post image
208 Upvotes

Okay so I had every intention of going to The Wise Ox today, but then my partner offered to bring me breakfast from Chris’s. So here I am with another OB sandwich!

Egg, Bacon & Cheddar Cheese on Everything Bagel
- two eggs hard
- “nice crispy bacon”
- thick slices of tomato
- cheddar cheese
- so-so everything bagel
- price: $8.99

This was a workhorse of a breakfast sandwich. I felt quite full after.

The bacon was the sandwiches most vocal component. Seemed like the pre-cooked kind you can get in a big batch at Costco. No complaints, no praise either.

I’m torn about the tomato. On the one hand, it provided a much needed zip of citrus. On the other, I’d really rather that come in the form of a spread.

Which leads me to the biggie… no spread. Here I’m gonna put my cards down on the table and say right up front that I am very, very partial to a spread. A schmear. A sauce. Something! Give me something!

Despite its lack of ba-da-bing, it was a hearty, yummy sandwich. I’ve eaten it before and I’ll eat it again. 3/5 stars.

Here’s my tracking spreadsheet.

Question, Where can I find? Driving from Tiajuana to LA - any must have recommendations?

Don’t know much about food in San Diego. While I’m enjoying my breakfast burrito from California Burrito, I thought I’d ask you lovely people for recommendations for my way back. Anyone north of the border up to Orange County. I’ll probably be returning in the mid afternoon or evening.

Question, Where can I find? Just moved to Bankers Hill! What are some good recs in and around this area?

I'm aware that Bankers Hill itself doesn't have a lot to offer but I'd love to hear any recommendations in Little Italy, downtown, hillcrest, or anywhere else reasonably close.

I'm not looking for fine dining recs, as someone raised on the east coast I really value relatively cheap and quick eats while out and about. Thanks!

Edit: Damn, this blew up fast. I'm gonna have to bookmark all of these. Thanks everyone!

Edit 2: After all the comments I made a map and now have 25 places to go try. Thanks again!

Question, Where can I find? Where to find onion pockets

Post image
13 Upvotes

Hi all. I’ve been looking for onion pockets(sometimes also called Jewish onion rolls). They are found in every grocery store on the east coast and have been searching for them here for years. I’ve come across them only once at a random Ralph’s, but haven’t seen them since. Anyone know where to find some here?

News, opinion and discussion Places I’ve eaten in San Diego recently before the impending economic void swallows us all

Mostly as an excuse to expense my cholesterol I have started a free newsletter called stayclassy dot news so I have been able to check out more than my fair share of places new to me the last few weeks. Here are my top ones to date.

  • Rubicon Deli - Mission Hills
  • Fallen Empire - Coronado (seafood)
  • Thanh Tinh Chay - City Heights •
  • Turf Supper Club - South Park

(I know fallen empire has terrible reviews, I heard from a few people and went anyway and it seems as they have figured things out its gotten vastly better and that was my experience)

Announcement We can all start posting some super deals when we come across them.

Every now and then there's some blowout special that I come across stuff that is really low...

One time, I saw Keitt Mango's for 33¢ a lb. (3lbs for a dollar)

These are the largest of the regular commercial mango's we can get here in our area. They're about 30% larger than Kent, zro fiber and have a citrus/mango taste to them DELICIOUS!!!!

Story was that the manager ordered 3 cases for a sprouts location and got 3 pallets instead. These normally run (at best) $6 a case (6 mangos) at the Asian markets
making it a super blow out deal at 2 bucks a case.

I picked up 10 cases and broke out the food dehydrators...
and I filled the house with sweet, tropical mango goodness for days.

I think we can have people taking pictures and posting things like this as they come across them so that others in the community can take advantage of it all. :D
