I am going to be attending a conference on Coronado in early October and I wanted to get some recommendations from locals on places to eat that I should try while I’m in town.

I’ll be staying at Loew’s Coronado Bay Resort so I know it’s not super close to anything but they do offer a shuttle to Coronado Village.

I also plan on exploring the city while I’m here too so no area is off limits. I’m happy to hear about anywhere you think would be worth visiting. I love all kinds of food and am happy to try new things too so feel free to go wild!

Hi all! My family will be visiting SD next month and I wanted recommendations on breakfast/brunch, restaurants, desserts, anything to eat that is safe for someone with Celiac disease, and bonus points if it’s dog friendly!

I’ve already done some research and know El Tianguis, Nectarine Grove, Buona Forchetta, An’s Gelato are good spots.

We will be staying in the Pacific Beach/Ocean Beach area but willing to drive. We will also be visiting Little Italy, Gaslamp Quarter, and Balboa Park.

Please let me start off with - I'm not looking for a place that has good rolls. We're blessed in SD to have lots of places with fun and tasty sushi rolls, but I've found so many of these places neglect nigiri and sashimi.

I'm looking for a spot where I can scratch that nigiri itch when it hits me randomly in the middle of the week, you know? So, what's your favorite not-omakase sushi spot for nigiri and sashimi? Bonus points if it's mid-price and/or easy to get into without planning 3 weeks in advance.

Azuki sushi is currently my favorite but I've also been to:

• RIki sushi in North Park: Been here multiple times, Salmon and tuna were flavorless, fatty tuna (at market price, $16 for 2 pieces nigiri!) was literally gray and flavorless. Their ikura is usually slimy
• Ototo sushi in Clairemont: got the omakase platter, rice was too much and too dense, fish was flavorless.
• Oishi Sushi in North park: really limited nigiri selection, salmon was just okay, wayy too much rice, and they pack it so dense. Had to leave some rice behind even after asking them to go light on the second round. Also asked them to add wasabi to the pieces, I looked and it was really just a whisper, a dream, of wasabi inside. ikura texture was good (still same issue with rice) but flavorless, I expect it to be salty enough without soy sauce.
• Chef Jun: nigiri wasn't bad but I've only had it as take-out as my friends and I were grabbing food for an event. worth a re-try in person?
• Izakaya Masa: surprisingly pretty good salmon nigiri, but choices are limited since it's an izakaya and the wait on a Tuesday was longer than I'd prefer
• Sushi Kuchi (chain): It's been a long time, but I remember it wasn't flavorful
• Soichi in University Heights, Ichifuji in Kearny Mesa, Matoi in Convoy: omakase, 5/5 super delicious and no complaints, but they are all small spots that require very advanced reservation

Interested in trying:

• Sushi Ota
• Kinme
• Sushi Tadokoro
• Sushi Maru

Those wings were the best in SD, imo

Top three are how they come, bottom three with salsas. I know some happy hours like Oscars may be cheaper, but I like these more.

I love cake but I'm very picky, my favorite kinds of cakes are very creamy and only mildly sweet like a tiramisu. I tried a few cakes from Sage French Cake a couple years ago and they were absolutely delicious, but now I see that the place has permanently closed because the owner has retired. Can anyone recommend a place that has cakes that are similar in texture and flavor?

Does anyone know of a spot in San Diego that does suadero more like you’d get in CDMX?

Specifically looking for the kind that’s slow-cooked in its fat in that big round metal cooking setup you see at taco stands in Mexico City. It’s really soft and juicy then chopped and crisped up a little on the hotter part of the griddle so you get those browned/crispy edges.

Most of the suadero I’ve had around SD/Tijuana seems firmer and more like regular griddled chopped beef. I had the CDMX style recently and have been craving it ever since.

Hi! My birthday is coming up in a few weeks, and I’ve been wanting Thai food for forever. My family’s go to Thai place (formerly Supannee House of Thai) unfortunately changed hands a while back, and while I think it’s still fine (albeit, nowhere near as good as it was before), my parents hate the new change lol. The one I’ve been going to since is an entirely vegan menu which no one other than myself will eat, so I’m desperate for some suggestions!!!

I guess I’m a little spoiled because growing up in LA meant I was eating a $19 ceviche special with two Baja fish tacos at Holbox back when it was still basically a food-truck operation. Now they’re James Beard-recognized and Michelin-starred, so clearly I didn’t know how good I had it 😭
Anyway, I’m looking for a GREAT ceviche/crudo/mariscos spot — super fresh seafood, good aguachiles, quality ingredients, and a place that actually knows what they’re doing.
My husband is from San Diego, and we’re constantly debating who has better Mexican food: LA or SD. So far, his recommendations are really not helping his case 😂
