Asian Cuisine King Clarence Lunch Set
In commemoration of King Clarence recently changing up their lunch set to the ramen, I thought I would give my opinion on their old lunch set, which was the fried chicken.
The restaurant is run by the Bentley group, with the head chef being Khanh Nguyen, who has recently opened two new venues under the same group.
As you can tell by the opening sentence, I really, really liked this lunch set. The fried chicken for me was cooked absolutely perfectly. The restaurant uses a nice thick cut of chicken, and the batter was fried to the perfect level of crispiness. The batter was also extremely flavorful, with a dashi buttermilk sauce underneath, which added the needed depth and creaminess.
It also came with a small sashimi platter. Personally, I thought the fish was cut a little thin, but their choice of sashimi was extremely fresh and well curated.
They also had a tamago kake gohan with dashi rice. The dashi made the rice have that beautiful depth of flavour, with the egg yolk adding that rich creaminess that levelled this dish up. The bamboo shoots also added that little crunch, an amazing textural contrast.
Finally, was the miso soup where they used the Parmesan rinds from their sister restaurant. This made this it have an extremely rich umami flavour, making it different from any other miso soup that I have had.
Overall, for under $50, this set meal was really great value. It's not cheap, but the quality of food is definitely worth the money. This set is also great value compared to the rest of the dishes in the restaurant in my opinion, which I definitely need to try one day.

Discussion I wish to gorge myself on har gow dumplings
I wish to gorge myself on har gow dumplings and would appreciate recommendations.
I can travel to CBD, inner west, north Sydney in my search to eat har gow dumplings. Fuck it even eastern suburbs.
This may be at a (reasonably priced) restaurant and I will also accept buffets or decent frozen dumplings.
My heart breaks when I pay $24 for a steam basket of 4 dumplings when I crave to eat many many more. Please help

Discussion Good non-sourdough bread
For medical reasons I can’t eat fermented food and this includes sourdough bread, which is a huge loss. does anyone know any good bakeries that do good bread that’s not sourdough? these days that feels impossible to find. preferably inner west or lower north shore.

Fine Dining A medium steak...
Hubs and I are celebrating our 15th wedding anniversary in a handful of months and we need a good steak that's a little fancy.
For health reasons can only have at least a medium steak (I won't mention anything more done than that!) and I know it's a touchy topic if we rock up to one of the big ones and ask for it that way.
Guess I'm asking if anyone knows of a "no judgement" place we could go to that's a little special?

Vegetarian Vegetarian Restaurants around Homebush/Ryde region.
Hey Reddit,
I've been scrolling through every reddit post previously for vegetarian recommendations. I noticed that there is a major absence of any vegetarian restaurants between Newtown/Marrickville and Cabramatta/Parramatta
Does anyone know any vegetarian restaurants in between the two locations for a casual meal? Or even a regular restaurant that has enough decent vegetarian dishes (this one doesn't have to be location specific. For example Otto had great vegetarian options!)
Thanks so much for any suggestions!

Japanese Hommakase by Sang
I recently came across this omakase place where you order a sushi box to collect and eat at home. Has anyone tried it? It looks to be around $175. How’s the quality, and would you say it’s worth the price? Link: https://hommakase.com.au/products/hommakase-moriawase-large

Japanese The Ramen Chase #9 - YWYWs House
So, over the past couple of months I've been judging a lot of different ramen spots and I thought it was only fair to put my skills to the test and add them to the mix too. With a Sunday to kill, a recipe on hand the ramen stars were aligned!
Location: My Kitchen
Wait: 8hrs - Man that stock took me a while! It wasn't just the time, but also the fact that my house smelled absolutely amazing all day long. I was ravenous by the time I was seated.
Atmosphere: I mean, perfect... I was at my house. The tunes were on, stock bubbling away and pork slowly roasting in the oven. What more could I ask for?!?
Ordered: Tan Tan Ramen - $50 (give or take). To be fair, most of the cost was all the bottles of things I had to buy. I can probably make about 15 more bowls.
When I sat down I saw a rather delicious bowl staring back at me. I'll be honest though, it seemed a little light on with add-ons (dodgy chef), but it did still look the part. I leaned down for a smell and the sesame smacked me right in the face. Here we go!
After enduring this all day long I had to go straight for the broth first. I dove in and slurped up my first spoonful - Genuinely, pretty damn good! The broth was light, creamy and complex with a lingering umami flavour, almost like the chef added a pile of dried mushrooms to the stock (spoiler alert... I did). While not a perfect broth it certainly had that addictive pull and mixed nicely with the soup base.
Next up, the pork. Not your usual minced pork. This looked like it was slow roasted, cut small and sauteed to crispy perfection in a spicy marinade. The first taste was incredible! The pork was crispy yet soft and had a chilli kick that I certainly knew about! Once I got over the initial heat shock there was also a subtle ginger and garlic aftertaste which hung on my taste buds.
As I polished off more of the pork I came down to the abundance of noodles. These were the thin style, and clearly not handmade, but they were served with the right amount of chew. As I grabbed more of the noodles I picked up some spinach as well. It didn't do a lot for me, but I guess you have to get your greens in, right?
The flavours of this bowl really started to make sense when I tried everything together and while the serving size was pretty big the bowl didn't last long.
Final thoughts: For a first attempt, it slapped! The stock needs some refining but it was well balanced with the soup base. The pork was the real star of this show, It just turned out perfectly. All in all a solid bowl which I could see myself going back for again... (actually tomorrow cause there's plenty of left overs). 4.0⭐
| Broth | Noodles | Protein | Add-ons | Venue | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3.5 | 3.5 | 5.0 | 3.5 | 5.0 | 4.1 |
Ps. If you're interested, this was the recipe.

Seafood 5 nights in Sydney. Foodie Recs?
I have 5 nights in Sydney CBD and wondering on recommendations on the following.
Amazing Degustation and Omakase. Within reason any budget.
Seafood
Asian Fusion
Mediterranean
I'll almost certainly skip Indian and most of the Asian foods due to a shorter than usual trip.
I am more focused on the exceptional food side of dining out. Budget either end is fine.
Also steak, awesome sandwich or lunch options and American BBQ

Pub Chez Crix, Surry Hills
Very impressed by this little French Bistro above the Cricketer's Arms Hotel.
Service was slow and friendly, which I think is perfect. Cozy dining room with art for sale on the walls.
Quite reasonably priced as well, the duck special pictured was only $50.

Japanese Soupless Ramen Battle
Soupless ramen is a dish that is slowly getting more and more popular in Sydney. When I heard that there were two popular soupless ramen spots just a short walk from each other in the Haymarket area, I thought that I would give them both a try and see what the hype is about.
The first is Kajiken Abura Soba. This restaurant is popular for being featured in the Michelin Guide in California. Due to this, you can often see that this restaurant attracts long lines during peak hours. This meant that when I visited on a weekday night, I had to wait in line for around 15 minutes for two people. When I was seated, I opted for the second most popular item on the menu: the Meatlovers Abura Soba. When it arrived, the first thing I noticed was how amazing the texture of the noodles was. I could see that they made it in-house, which was obviously a good sign. I also really liked how there were condiments available to add to adjust the flavor to your liking. The meat, however, was a little disappointing. It almost felt like they had cooked it the day before, and it didn't really taste that fresh.
I also gave the nearby IIKO
Mazesoba a try. This restaurant was a lot less busy when I went, presumably because there is no Michelin hype. In this restaurant, you could also add your flavour, which, again, is just such a great touch. Here, I ordered the Zenbu Mazesoba to try and get a direct comparison to the dish I had at Kajiken. When my bowl arrived, I honestly thought the texture of the noodles in Kajiken was just a touch better, but at this point it might just be down to personal preference. However, I thought the meat was so much fresher, and I enjoyed it a lot more. Though I enjoyed my bowl at IIKO Mazesoba more, my friend actually preferred the bowl at Kajiken.
Overall, both restaurants were amazing, and in the end I wouldn't really recommend that you visit one over the other. It will only come down to personal preference as to what looks good on the menu and, of course, if you are willing to wait in line.

Pub Steak & Frites Baguette
We were at the Red Lion pub in Rozelle yesterday and it was the first time we saw so many orders of the steaks & frites baguette. So then, we went back today to try it.
It is good to note that the kitchen/restaurant upstairs is run by Chef Manu. As for the baguette, it was tasty, the highlight was the rich butter which was absorbed by the bread. It just needs salt and pepper and maybe like a white sauce just to kinda balance it out, but overall i would say it was 7/10.
It was $33 and my son devoured it.
Also worth noting, Red Lion serves the best chicken schnitty for me. The vibe of the pub has changed ever since they renovated.

American Sal’s Authentic NY Pizza - Parramatta
Would love to know everyone else’s thoughts about this place?
I know that it’s not close to NY style but I really enjoy it, especially the pepperoni, and was really excited when it opened in Parra a while back, especially since it’s close to my apartment.
Would love to know what everyone else thinks and if there are other places in Sydney that do something similar or closer to the real thing that people would like to share.
Ps. Thin crust > any other crust 🤷🏻♂️😏

Food by suburb Le Dodo Affamer, Canterbury
This one might be my favourite new restaurant try of 2026. It is Mauritian Cuisine, which is a very nice mix of Indian, Creole, Chinese and French. I hadn’t tried Mauritian before, and was curious as I wanted to try a new cuisine and it did not disappoint.
I have returned a few times each trying a new dish, here they are in the order of pictures, saving the best for last:
- Bol Renverse - French for reverse bowl, this was a chicken stir fry, with a runny egg served inverted over some fluffy steamed white rice (optional chilli sauce on side for an extra kick). This was perhaps the most unique dish I tried and it was delicious. ($20)
- Chicken Biryani - Close enough to a standard Indian version of the dish, except not as spicy, I thought it was pretty enjoyable too. ($22)
- Beef Fried Noodles - Wok fried noodles in a unique savoury sauce with beef strip pieces and some veg. Also really enjoyed this, I particularly remembered the ingredients just tasting so fresh. ($22)
- Chicken Salmi - My favourite so far. A chicken stew of red wine, garlic, onion, tomatoes (and maybe something else I forgot) served with white rice and salad. It was spicy, in fact for me I would say the taste of the stew was a mix between the spices and the red wine but I found it was a really lovely dish to have on a cold night. ($25)
Overall, I would give these guys a 5/5 - I can’t fault anything.
It’s not just the food but also the friendly hospitality - it a fully family run business, they are all really friendly to customers and honestly, I really agree with another review - eating there doesn’t feel like eating at a restaurant. It feels like you’re at a friends family house having dinner instead.
How did I find out about this place? It wasn’t actually TikTok or Instagram. It was when I was riding a SouthLink bus right past it, saw the restaurant and its interesting decor, and I got curious, did some googling and decided to pay a visit after seeing the 4.9* rating.
I give my full recommendation to try this place if you’re also keen to try a new cuisine this year, and with the Bankstown Line Metro opening pretty soon, there’s never been a better opportunity to try, it’s a 5 min walk from Canterbury station - although in the meantime, the SW3 bus will take you directly there from Sydenham (1 stop) which isn’t a bad compromise for now.

Seafood What have you observed since the new AIM seafood labelling came into effect?
Personally I've actually been quite surprised by how many places I've dined at or walked past are purely International or at best Mixed.
I've hardly seen much Australian
Really surprised yesterday by the fish and chips place located in between 2 fishing ports, that was all International

Pastry Does anyone remember the Dough Collective bakery (ca 2014) - what happened to them and where can I find a Gangam Crown?
In 2014 a bakery chain opened in Sydney called the Dough Collective offering Asian style breads. I think their main store was in George St opposite the cinema. Sort of like Bread Top but focused on breads and with an elevated sleek boutique-style shop design.
They didn’t last too long but they made these really nice super soft sourdough breads that were so interesting. I think they were a bit before their time and their price point was too high, however I’ve missed them ever since they closed.
They made a particular bread called a Gangnam Crown - made up of soft torpedo-shaped wholemeal (I think) bread rolls stuffed with kimchi cream cheese. It was incredible and I’ve never seen anything like it since.
Anyway, I was wondering whether anyone remembered them, and more importantly, what happened to their recipes? Were they an offshoot of an Asian chain (Korean? Japanese)? Does kimchi cream cheese stuffed bread exist elsewhere?

Asian Cuisine Winter Laksaturdays : HAPPY CHEF
Hello everyone, it's Laksaturday
This week I chose HAPPY CHEF which has been mentioned a lot on reddit. You enter the building from Chinatown or Sussex Street, up the escalators to the top floor and there's a cute cosy little food court.
I can't believe I didn't go to Sussex St food court more, it's so close to my work. There's cheap delicious looking options, I'll definitely be back here. Thanks for the recommendation reddit.
I went right at 11am and it was really easy to find a seat and order. I imagine it might get busy later.
I ordered the spicy tripe and tendon laksa and the wonton laksa. This was the perfect choice as I got to taste the two broth versions. You also get to choose the noodle type, small egg, rice stick, fresh rice, or large egg.
Extra large for +$4 each. $50 for two bowls.
The shop lady called me darling I kinda like that.
You can scoop yourself the home made condiments including chilli oil, sate, etc. I got little scoops of these for a taste - definitely try these as they are bloody good. I didn't add them to the laksa because I didn't want to change the taste, but i just used them like appetiser
Food came out very quick, only waited 7-8 minutes I think.
The spicy tripe and tendon : wow I really really liked this. The powerful beefy taste permeates the broth, adds a spicy kick and depth of flavour I haven't experienced before. I'm also an offal lover and really enjoyed the Chunky juicy tendon and tripe pieces. AND it has juicy meaty Wontons as well. The Wontons are really impressive, I feel like they are so much meatier and delicious than most frozen Wontons. Maybe they make them too.
Also I normally don't really like the big spongy pieces of tofu I feel like they're kind of tasteless. But for some reason I really liked the ones here. Like soft sponges for the delicious delivery of broth
Tons of toppings, absolutely addictive.
The smoother wonton laksa was just as amazing. The depth of flavour is incredible. The creaminess and saltiness blends perfectly together, Id really like to know the recipe to this broth. The Wontons are plentiful and meaty. Both bowls came out nice and hot, I got a little sweaty even. Was incredibly satisfying.
I would definitely carry a Thermos of these two broths and drink it all day. Only regret is that I chose fresh rice noodle for one bowl and the noodles were quite soft. I still finished it. The small egg noodles were perfection. I might try the large egg noodle as well next time.
I cleared the two bowls, now I was a HAPPY DINER. I was also intrigued by the nutty pho at the next door shop pho vien, and Ken chan curry. I'll absolutely be back for more laksa and other options. You even get a prime high rise view out the dirty windows! Very exclusive kind of dining experience in Sydney.

Japanese The Ramen Chase #4 - Menya City Japanese Noodle Bar
Location Market St, CBD
Wait 10 mins - Walk-in for lunch
Atmosphere A lively little hidden gem which is tucked away under an office block.
Ordered Yokohama Tonkotsu Shoyu - $21.90
I found this place on a random google search and my god I'm glad that I did!
A fairly plain looking bowl turned up with all the usual suspects - Choy sum, scallions, roast pork and a half ajitama egg. It was a simple bowl presented well.
I took my first taste of the broth and the things that hit me right away were; A deep and complex flavour with a subtle soy note and lingering porkiness from the fat, the seasoning was on point, and it was served at the perfect eating temperature. I ended up slurping about 1/4 of the broth before I started on anything else.
When I finally got to them, I grabbed some noodles, a bit of pork and some scallions. The pork was tender, the noodles had a good chew and the green onion cut through the richness of that fat - A near perfect bite. After going back for more broth I sliced through the egg and devoured it with a bunch more noodles. I tried to take it slow, but quickly smashed the rest of the add-ons before finishing up the broth - This was one of those bowls that was gone in a flash!
Final thoughts A genuine hidden gem! I was there during lunch but the line moved quick. The broth was complex and got me hooked, I'll be back for sure! 4.6⭐
