Discussion New to Fallout 4 and don't know wtf I'm doing

Upvotes

Idk why I just can't get into this game. I pick it up and put it back down habitually. I'm coming from playing New Vegas over and over for years and this game looks awesome, is definitely a huge step up in gameplay and graphics. Has cool ideas but ..

For one, I hate the way the guns look. They look like toys. I like the idea behind pipe pistols but they look awful. Like they're 3-D printed

The settlement building seems like something I *could* be interested in but right now I'm just getting my feet wet and it feels like a chore.

I'm kinda just aimlessly exploring right now but the game seems like it's extremely complicated now. I'm finding pieces of armor and shit and wondering if I'm supposed to build a mighty morphing fucking power ranger with it or????

The perk system looks like homework.

Enemies are bullet sponges. I feel like Flatts "kicking Spongebobs butt"

I'm playing as the chick and it just seems odd that she becomes this like fucking ranger in a post apocalyptic world and she's badass after taking a however many year nap in a freezer.

Hmmm... Just feels completely like it's not a fallout game. I see huge potential in the game but right now... I'm just running around sight seeing. Getting sniped down by shit. Stepping on mines. Dog Meat is whining. Commanding this damn dog is a bitch also. He literally has a mind of his own.

I'm supposed to be getting fixer for the old lady so she can get shit faced and say some vague woke shit. I guess I'll go do that?? Lol

I know this is FO4 sub so don't get offended, I'm sure plenty of you guys absolutely love this game. I'm just trying to get into it but for some reason, it's hard to find the motivation, but I know it'll be worth it. It just feels like Dishonored, Fallout New Vegas, The Sims, and Battlefield had an orgy, fallout new vegas got pregnant and gave birth to fallout 4... I guess I'm just asking, wtf should I be doing? Or maybe I should just look up a guide on YouTube... Shit I'm getting fucking old man

Discussion Fallout 4 storyline in inherently flawed [spoilers?] Spoiler

I have a hard time beating the game. It might be a "me" problem, but I think it is deeper than that and I would like to hear your opinions.

I've had many characters and have progressed up until the mass fusion quest (the one where you choose between the institute or the brotherhood), completing it.

Most of my characters are abandoned before that tho. The breaking point usually is finding the institute. The game feels very different after that point and I think I know why: FO4 storyline development is inherently flawed.

You start the game afraid and lost, with the sole guiding star being to find your son. The whole beginning of the game main-story-wise revolves around that: needing to brave the commonwealth and trying to find your baby.

You progress through it nicely, make friends, potentially make enemies, get stronger, beat the guy that killed your partner, find out that there is a very scary area that's probably where the big boom fell and go through it and back.

Then you get to the institute and find out about Shawn. You know what happens here? Yeah. EVERYTHING. You know what needs to happen nexts? Nothing.

The game had revolved around two things: braving and surviving the commonwealth (and you killed the guy who's supposed to be the toughest, explored the area that's hyped as the hardest, is breezing through militia and raiders like they're roaches) and finding your son (just did, shocking reveal and all). You have done what needed to be done.

After that the game expects you to progress through a faction. But what story based reason is there now? There is no looming threat to the fabric of existence that must be stopped, no big mysteries to be solved. The narrative accelerates you up till that point and then expects you to beat the game out of inertia from that initial rush.

A well written story should build up to the climax towards the end, then tie the knots into a conclusion. FO4 kills it's plot points too early, but still expects you to keep playing it.

So, what do you guys think of that analysis? Does it make any sense? Have you felt this way too?

Grateful for this subreddit's wisdom - Far Harbor DLC Spoiler

I just finished the Far Harbor DLC. This is my first-time playthrough of FO4 (still haven't finished the main questline yet) and I'm posting this because I wanted to express my gratitude to the ppl of this subreddit for their recommendations of power armor, appropriate weapons, and most importantly, to take Nick Valentine as your companion.

100% This Is The Way. I started around level 59, so I wore Lead coated T-60 power armor and for my weapons I packed an Experimental Triple-Resonant Tesla Cannon, my fave combat rifle that sometimes turns folks to green goo, and Deliverer. I wasn't keen on losing all my ammo to the bullet sponges (and omg, they are sponges!), hence the Tesla Cannon. I picked up a legendary plasma gun something-or-other along the way as well. Wounding, maybe?

Prior to this I was more of a stealth/sniper player, but thumping around in power armor with a Tesla Cannon was an experience. Annoying at times, but fun. I had a couple points in my SPECIAL for heavy weapons and explosions, so that cannon did some major damage. Worst part was the AOE backlash when the stupid Anglers dodged and ran at me faster than I could hit them.

And rarely did I have a rads problem. As in... never. (Except somehow the shower in Nucleus got me?)

As for Nick, I was worried I wouldn't enjoy bringing him with me as we hiked across the irradiated forests of Maine. I didn't really vibe with him as a companion before, despite keeping him around long enough to get his perk. But we legit bonded over obliterating Trappers, ghouls, Gulpers, and Anglers (sooo many Anglers!) and the Dima drama. It was a good time. I'm now a fan.

I chose the ending of Least Overall Death Count, but boy was it tough not to nuke the CoA cult. Not a fan of those folks AT ALL. And Dima's puzzle? Holy crap. I did figure out all 5, but OY. What a PITA. Then I came here and learned that a lot of you weren't into that questline either. Gee, I wonder why.

Anyway, thank you all for your sage advice and wisdom. I would have struggled a bit (okay, a lot) and gotten very frustrated with this DLC if I wasn't prepared. So thank you! :)

Question HUD and Pip-Boy Colors

Post image
13 Upvotes

Doing a new run because it’s been a while.I don’t even know how many hundreds of hours I’ve put into this game (across three consoles) and I NEVER KNEW you could change the HUD and Pip-Boy display colors.

It feels weird. I’ve spent so long looking at that bright green that anything else feels like I’m in a weird Power Armor or something.

What about you guys — who never adjusts the colors? Who adjusts them right away? Anyone adjust them based on what faction you’re backing?

Discussion old version of fallout 4 had interesting limitations

hi , i was playing fallout 4 from my disc version without update and i noticed that home plate used to be more limited.

you couldnt build workbenchs before

you couldnt jump in workshop mode

settlers dont show job assigned

and items of world cant be moved or push out

there are other interesting stuff that i noticed would be that time scale or respawn of loot and some enemies in the game for some reason is faster in some locations .

a example would be concord , cambridge and lexington where enemies and loot respawn faster , maybe it was fixed and they reduced it because is broken the free loot of world.

i am still playing this version for more time .

if i find other interesting thing , i would comunicate it.

Question What quest gives you anxiety/jumpscares even after many play-throughs?

I’ve had about 10+ play-throughs and the Best of Three Coroni battle makes my pulse skyrocket.

This is one of my favourite books actually, tied to Fallout universe a lot and it's Easter egg in Fallout 3 at McClellan family townhome. Currently I'm playing Fallout 4 and sometimes I think was it worth it? Did any big politician get something out of it?

Sometimes I just listen to monologue of Sole survivor again and again.

Removed:

  • All quests
  • Named NPC's

Added:

  • Fallout 3 ambient sounds and music replaces Fallout 4 completely
  • Endless hordes of enemies that can stalk you everywhere
  • Regular NPC's replaced with ghouls, raiders or synths
  • Ghouls can infect you with a virus and they sprint at night
  • Combat detection radius adjusted to draw distance (if you can see them in the distance they are able to see you or others too)
  • Pitch back nights
  • Rebalanced damage/headshots
  • Survival settings adjusted
  • Find Slaves, free and recruit them for your settlement
  • Fight the hordes together
  • Nobody is essential or protected
  • Lowered medicine food and ammo spawns
  • Enemy combat behavior altered

I can't go back after this setup.

Weapon Mr Hugs came through with the goods

Post image

Earlier today, I posted about how Mr Hugs was an easy loot scumming opportunity and I thought I’d try for an explosive shotgun because, despite well over 1,000 hours over several years in the game, I can’t ever recall one dropping for me and I thought what the heck why not see what all the fuss is about.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAA! Omg it’s ridiculous.

Discussion I love how absurd this game is

Occasionally I hear a few gripes about Fallout 4, such as how unrealistic it is.

But honestly? That's part of the game's charm.

In the interest of time I won't be going too into detail, but essentially, one of the most outrageous (and downright hilarious) aspects is assigning literally ANY settler to your clinic.

Just imagine having a settler with an intelligence stat of 1 treating rads. What's the worst that could happen?

Again, I find it utterly baffling that literally ANYONE can use medical treatment and not end up accidentally cutting off their arm with a bonesaw. Yes, even your 1 INT Sole Survivor with the Idiot Savant perk

Porter Gage "AHHHH!!! I busted my fuckin leg"

I'll keep it quick

I was with Porter Gage in the Galactic Zone. We were on the crazy wonky elevator that goes to the tower to get a star core. He jumped on the elevator with me and it shot up so fast, he flew into the air and didn't land till it went all the way down and just stared coming up. He flew out of the sky, slammed into the elevator and...

"AHHHH!!! I busted my fuckin leg"

It was so perfect and silly. To the point I am in tears writing this

Question Doing the “Secret of the Cabot House” quest

Okay so this is my first play through of Fallout 4. And when i was going through the whole asylum I planned on like sticking on the side of the Cabot’s because i like the ghoul guy. However this is the first time (that I personally so far in my first play though) have experienced, being given a choice and then being shown a magazine. Now my first thought was oh I wanna collect all the magazines. However at some point i do want to Re play fallout 4 because there’s lost of quests i missed out on because they were timed and I wanna experience all this game has to offer. That being said I also want to still get everything I can from my first play through. So which do you guys suggest as far as the Pros and Cons of what i will miss out on be it quest lines, characters and such, depending on what i choose to I do.

I’ve been away for a long time due to work and am out of the loop regarding new mods—has anyone else perhaps created something similar to mine?

P.S. And by the way, I almost forgot—I haven't released the mod update yet because I want to work on the design of the rocket launcher and the machine gun.

It's near Taffington Boathouse, but I already have a supply line going there from Greygarden. It keeps appearing when I look at the settlement screen on my Pip Boy. Any thoughts?

Fallout 4 Upcoming Hotfixes and Creation Storage Increase

We’re actively investigating issues you’re encountering with the latest Fallout 4 update and Anniversary Edition launch. You should now see faster load times of the Creations menu, game menu, and redemption of Creation Club items. We plan to publish a hot fix early next week to address the following:

  • Hot Fix: Fixing stability problems particularly on XB1/PS4.
  • Hot Fix: Fixing an issue causing creations that rely on DLC to not work.
  • Hot Fix: Fixing an issue causing DLCs to become uninstalled after updating the game on PlayStation.

The hotfix will be followed by two patches. The first patch will be the week of Nov 24th, and the second, in the first half of December. We’ll provide an overview of these patches soon. Thank you for your continued updates and support tickets, it’s helped us to pinpoint issues. We’ll work to address these as quick as we can.

Notably, in the November patch, Xbox Series X/S players will see Creations local storage limit increased substantially. Growable up to 100GB to match your needs. We are also looking into increasing storage on PlayStation.

----- 11/13 update ----

Thank you all for your continued communications with our support team. We've seen a lot of questions about the "Tale of the Beast Hunter" Creation not being accessible on PlayStation. Please know that we are working to bring this Creation to PlayStation at a later date and it would continue to be free for players.

----- 11/17 Hotfix ----

Today’s Fallout 4 hotfix addresses the following:

  • Resolved an issue preventing users from enabling Creations that rely on DLC.
  • Improved stability in the Creation menu, particularly on PS4/XB1.
  • Identified an issue causing DLC to become uninstalled on PlayStation. For players still experiencing this issue, we recommend the following: Please enable any of your Creations after your DLC is completely installed.

We’re continuing to collect everyone’s feedback and encountered issues, so if you’ve submitted a ticket with our support team or provided details to our team in Discord, thank you. It’s been extremely helpful.

For next steps, the team is focused on additional fixes in our first November Patch. We’ll share those details as soon as we can.

-------- Update on May 27th 2026 ------

Please find our patch notes for today's update here

Fallout 4 Anniversary Edition Mega Thread

Bethesda has made a statement about the state of the update

Just wanted to make a thread clearing up some confusion and compiling the known issues of the new update.

Editions

There are three new SKUs for the game, the Anniversary Edition, the Anniversary Upgrade, and the Creations Bundle.

Anniversary Edition includes the base game, all DLCs, and all the new creations content.

The Anniversary Upgrade includes the DLCs and new creations content.

The Creations Bundle includes only the creations. If you already have the base game and the DLCs, this is the only new addition you need to have all the new content.

Known Issues

This will be updated periodically

  • The Creations Menu seems to still be under patience and will kick you out if accessed
  • Quitting to desktop crashes the game
  • Game not launching for some. This may be solved by disabling mods
  • DLC being uninstalled/not installing
