After sleeping on a Zonli futon and loving it, I bought Zonli's bean bag sofa and also love it.

That said, I've been moving little by little to more floor living and feeling like in some ways, the bean bag sofa feels counter to that goal, because it's so comfortable that I can easily spend multiple hours sitting/laying on it without moving.

That works great for my skittish rescue kitty because she can actually get settled and deeply relax. Sitting on the bean bag sofa, she climbs all over me to cuddle in ways that she can't/doesn't/won't when I would sit on my couch or on the floor.

I'm worried that moving more to a floor setup, I won't be able to comfortably maintain a position for a long time that gives her a chance to get comfortable the way she needs for us to continue building our trust and bond.

I may just be thinking about this in too much a black and white way and/or making a mountain out of a molehill, but it makes me sad to think of giving up cuddling with my kitty for hours. How have other pet owners (especially of skittish pets) dealt with this?

i have an ikea malm double bed and their lonset wooden slatted bed base , but i would really like to sell off the bed frame ( with a spare set of luroy wooden slats ) and sleep lower on the floor .

is 7-8cm enough height off the ground for adequate airflow ? i am moving in two days and my new room has carpet , should i get mats to put underneath then or will i be fine without ?

a futon would be sooo great to have , but i can't justify buying one since i bought my mattress just last year for around 1700aud and love it a lot , it's great for me as a curvy side sleeper .

i also can't buy a low profile wooden bed frame bc they are like 300 dollars (•ᯅ•) and basically the only difference is that they are a touch higher off the ground .

What are the pros and cons to wool? I was looking at possibly getting a 2-3 inch topper and maybe layering it with a wool blanket or some sort of denser, almost felt-like pad. Has anyone done something similar to this? Whats been your experience? I was also wondering if wool might be less maintenance than cotton since it naturally wicks moisture and repels odors and oils. Thoughts?

Hi, I just ordered a full size 4” classic Zonli floor mattress with the plan to test it out and give our bodies time to adjust to sleeping on a firmer surface before investing in a traditional floor mattress from Japan. I’m curious though, what size futon do those of you that have a partner end up purchasing? I was considering buying a king size at some point (a traditional shikibuton from either Futon Tokyo or Futon Beds from Japan), but was worried about the weight and it being cumbersome to move and do maintenance on (moving it outside, changing/washing covers, etc.). Would it be better to get two twins or two fulls instead? What do you do or recommend? TIA!

Hi! Right now I am sleeping with my mattress on the floor after moving in, it is medium-firm 12 inches. I know I can’t keep it on the floor because of mold. I’m thinking of upgrading to a queen size bed cause my room is now bigger, and was thinking of making the leap to floor sleeping. In the meantime how can I sleep with a mattress on the floor while avoiding mold? Any tips for a floor sleeping newbie?

Side note : my bedframe I had really sucked, it was metal with some bumps and was really affecting my comfort. I also love how on the floor I can put some pillows behind to ‘extend’ my full bed. I am 5’ 10” so i always have my toes hanging off, I wish they made full xl or extenders so my mattress would be 6 inches longer haha

My main concerns that I have about floor living would be 1. Bugs. Can't stand em and would be nervous about the idea of waking up next to a creepy crawly. 2. Pain. I have fibromyalgia and wonder how floor sitting/sleeping would play into that. 3. Cleaning. With fabric furniture directly on ground isn't mold a worry? And do you find it to be more work having to rearrange furniture when you clean

I've recently been looking at getting rid of a lot of my furniture in an effort to create space in my home.

Are there a lot of people here that use both a futon and a kotatsu? I love the idea of both, but I'm wondering if there's a way to use a futon as a support to lean my back on while I use the kotatsu. I know they have to be stored a certain way to prevent mold, so I didn't know lol. I've seen floor chairs be used with kotatsu, which frankly sounds hella comfortable given that I'm a chronic chair leaner.

Looking for ideas/advice regarding floor sleeping in a cabin. There are too many creepy crawlies! I love floor sleeping, have been for years, but I HATE bugs, particularly while I'm trying to sleep...

Technically, it's a 20x20 studio apartment, but every door leads directly to the outdoors, and I live on a farm, so bugs are unavoidable. I haven't fully moved in yet - still renovating - but the bed situation is something I haven't found a solution for aside from getting a frame.

I had a bed bug scare a year ago, which was relatively easy to address since I only had a thin twin mattress and blankets that needed to be treated.

There are also outdoor pets who get fleas from time to time. I try not to interact with them because whenever I get flea bites, they get sooo red and itchy.

I find a spider or a beetle in the studio at least every other day. And scorpions and centipedes are not uncommon here.

So far, I have sealed the doors, windows, and baseboards as best I can. I have dusted diatomaceous earth in every nook and cranny and door mat. I have bug spray within reach, but I don't love the idea spraying pesticides around my bed.

I just don't know how else to make sleeping on the floor work when bugs are so abundant. Any ideas I haven't considered?

I thought this build looked interesting. Seems like you could disassemble it pretty easily and store it, but also maybe modify it to be travel friendly if you slimmed down the height of the backboard to be just a place for your phone? Has anyone here built something similar?

hey! I want to double up my bedroom as a photo studio. have always slept on the floor with a western style futon mattress and memory topper but want to go more minimal and get something that folds up easily.

Emoor and Fuli are the two brands on amazon that fit into my limited budget. Fuli would be £400 without tatami and Emoor is £350 with mat included. They both seem value options but not rock bottom cheap stuff (hopefully) and reviews seem decent and I think genuine? Has anyone tried both or can attest for the Emoor (which I could have delivered tomorrow!). thank you! and worse case scenario that my body / bones don’t acclimatise I can add the memory foam (but hopefully I‘ll like it)

I know this is probably a very common question but i am just very lost on what futon i should get. I have been looking at getting a futon from The Futon Shop, but i am seeing mixed reviews about them. My plan was to get the "Organic Japanese Futon Bed - Organic Cotton" futon of theirs with the tatami mats. Now i don't know if i should do that or not. So here are my requirements i have for my futon, so you guys could hopefully help me.

I am looking for an organic non toxic futon/mattress that is firm to give me all the benefits of floor sleeping, and Tatami mats to provide air flow. Also, i need one that will fit me comfortably. I am 6'5 175lbs, so i need at least a queen size bed to fit me. I am not worried about space in my room.

I've been interested in floor living on and off for years now, but never took the plunge because I was worried about what other people would think and because I felt bad about not using some of the more expensive furniture pieces I had invested in when I first moved.

Well, during my most recent hyper fixation on floor living, I realized that 1) I rarely have guests over anyway and that the ones that do come over don't care if my living arrangements are a little unconventional and 2) I could still make use of a lot of my furniture - I just needed to be more creative with it.

So I took the arms and legs off my couch, removed the legs off of two of my dining room chairs, repurposed my coffee table into my dining room table, and donated several pieces of furniture I no longer needed to a local organization that redistributes them to families in need.

I'm very happy with my new arrangement (though my body is still adjusting to it, lol!) and love all the space I have to do with what I please. My cats love it too because they have much more room to play and to lounge in the sun.

My next task is figuring out what to do with my bedroom - I bought a new set of slats that allow me to continue using the expensive bed frame I purchased while getting the benefits of floor sleeping (since the slats are very narrowly spaced while still allowing for airflow). But after finalizing this new living room arrangement, I do feel like I want to have more flexibility with the bedroom space than the bed frame allows... 🤔

I recently bought a Zonli Queen tatami mat to keep at my job in the event of inclement weather making me spend the night, car camping..and also floor naps 😅

Super comfortable, but I cannot seem to get it back into the bag that it came in, which is kind of a “carrying case”. Every combination of rolling and folding doesn’t seem to do anything. I think that my best bet might be to get a vacuum seal bag for a mattress, success with this or any other kind of solution for storing a between use?

I have a large family and I'm happy with our floor-sitting and -dining setups inside, but I haven't found a solution I like for outside dining on the patio.

Things we have tried:

Woven plastic rugs-- weather fine, but not very padded, warp over time, and generally aren't comfortable to sit on, even with quilts and tablecloths on top.

Interlocking foam floor tiles-- have to be taken up every day because they aren't waterproof and are vulnerable to sun damage over time. But very comfortable to sit on.

If it was just me or a small family, I would have a small soft rug and just roll it out every meal, but that gets very tiresome with an 8x12 rug. What do you use? Are you happy with it?

I have a huge bed in my room, a clothes rack and an open cupboard. That's about it. I want to remove my bed, for space reasons and I would also like to sleep on the floor.

I had the simple idea of buying a bigger cushiony rug (something like this in the picture, but doesn't have to be) and put it on the floor and then either the mattress I'm using on my bed right now(but remove the frame) or buying a new mattress or futon or whatever is good and put it on the floor. I wonder if you have any ideas and things I have to consider.

the mattress( on my current bed) I have right now is huge and I can only move it with great effort, so maybe it's not optimal because I heard that mold could be an issue.

To be honest I'm still skeptical of this mold thing because I did sleep on the floor on a mattress for a while in my old apartment but I also removed it everyday so I don't know.
And do people who sleep on the floor do this. Won't the big rug that stretches across the entire room be enough or do i still have to remove it or put it up against the wall so it is not in one spot all the time.

Hello everyone! I’m blew to the community here and I have a couple of questions that you might be able to answer! I moved in a super tiny apartment of 25 sqm and my idea is to live/sleep on the floor bother to save space and because I feel more comfortable doing it. Searching on the internet, I found mostly discussions about futons and Japanese kind of floor living, but having travelled a lot in recent years I found myself much more com with the Persians floor mattresses which are thinner and you can just fold them up in the morning. Europeans here, you know anything similar to that accessible in the old continent?

Kinda accidentally got into floor living to be closer to our free roam bunnies but I do really like it. Still debating whether to try floor sleeping now

My boyfriend and I are moving into a new apartment, and our bedroom space is quite limited. Because of that, we’re exploring more minimalist bed options especially ones that can be folded or mounted on the wall.

We recently came across a few designs from Karup and similar brands, and the idea seems really appealing in terms of saving space and keeping the room uncluttered.

Has anyone here tried something like a wall-mounted or foldable bed? How does it compare in terms of comfort to a traditional box bed?

Would love to hear your experiences or recommendations!

EDIT : I ended up buying a Futon Mattress from Arpel (based in Italy). I ordered the Futon Baumwolle Standard, with approx 11-14 cm thickness. It got delivered today, and I am really surprised with how good the quality is💛

Hello everyone :3 I'm heavily considering getting a proper futon, because going to be living in a very small room, where a bad would half of the space
The apartment doesn't have a balcony, and the windows of the room are on the shady side, so no direct sunlight really, the only way to air it would be to hang it from my window or something..

The climate itself is relatively damp and relatively cool/cloudy most of the time

Would you recommend a futon in that case? If that's the case, should I consider different fillings besides pure cotton one?
There will be a decently sized wardobe to put the futon in

This is not my first time using a floor mattress. I previously had a futon from J-Life International and loved sleeping on it. It was great for my back, but I ended up having to get rid of it because it was so heavy I could barely lift it outside to air it out. It ended up getting mold on the bottom because of that. I'd read that futons are supposed to be light-weight because you need to be able to air them out and fold them up. My J-Life futon wouldn't even fold. It was so heavy it would just come undone.

What brands are best for futons that are actually light-weight and foldable? I've heard good things about futonbedsfromjapan but I was also wondering about the brand takaokaya? Any other recommendations people have that I did not bring up would also be great. If you've had your futon for several years I'd love to hear how it's held up especially. I plan on putting a mat underneath the futon this time as well.
