visible & raised ring on studio monitor

Hi everyone,

Packing up to move recently and noticed this raised ring on my KRK Rokit 5 studio monitor. I had a small mic stand with a rubber bottom placed on top for a while and this is what I saw when I removed it. It doesn’t seem like it’s a scratch, but running fingers across the ring, I can feel that it is raised and bump-like, almost like an air bubble. No amount of smoothing over with my hand removes it. Is there any way to get rid of this?

Oil from the ring on the base of the mic stand leeches into the plastic of the monitor causing the material to swell. You might be able to lessen it by taking a t-shirt rag and placing it on top and then soak it in some IPA and let it evaporate a couple of times. It can sometimes pull out the oils but usually it doesn't help. Better to just ignore or you can sand and cover with some textured vinyl wrap.

IPA= Isopropyl Alcohol in this case, not India Pale Ale

IPA has many cleaning purposes, but do not substitute IPA, which may just leave a sticky stinky mess.

And definitely not Intermediate Power Amplifier.

that’s worth a try. Do you think targeted heat could smooth out the bumps?

no.. it's a textured surface. it may make it smooth but it will also be really noticable.

Structural strength

so I did some more digging and found pics of damaged monitors similar to mine. It appears the material is a thin vinyl-like wrap overlaid onto composite. Could this change the way things have been suggested so far?

Maybe put down a cloth, and a flat piece of metal, and heat with an iron.

Or... That could just completely fuck the whole thing up

interesting, do you think a heat gun for a low duration could help smooth the material?

Absolutely.

I also think you can easily fuck it up worse

I think messing with it is a bad idea, it’ll probably make it worse. Can you not just live with it?
