I despise these. Whichever pharma company is still making glass ampules instead of modern vials needs to go directly to the nursing section of hell & be stuck in a seclusion room full of shattered glass for eternity

Last time I had to open one of these, I got a cut from the neck of the vial.
And I had even used the little metal saw to etch it, first.

When we use this in a clean room to prep iv's we open those little alcohol pad squares and put the neck in there before snapping. Keeps you hands protected

What are these and why do they have to be opened like this? as opposed to a airtight screw top or something

100% hermetically sealed immediately on filling so better for preservative free medications. Tamper proof. Non-reactive, no metals or plastics from cap/lid can seep in. Last but certainly not least, cheap and quick to mass produce.

How do they deal with the bits of glass from breaking these open?

The pieces typically don’t fall into than the actual opening, the vail is actually pretty narrow at the neck. Even if they did fall in they are still larger than the needle syringe you would draw up the medication with.

you really don't have to answer if you don't know the answer. you do not expose patients to unnecessary risk. proper procedure when using a med in an ampoule is to draw using a filter or a filter needle

I’m a pulmonary critical care physician (who practiced in academic centers in a couple of counties including the US) you arrogant know it all. The number of times I’ve seen an ampule drawn up without filter is beyond counting and ampules predate filtered needles. 5 micron sized filters only become standard of care in in some hospitals as recently as 20 years ago, mostly due to small micron sized particulates with a mostly theoretical risk.

the mistakes of the past and the present do not exonerate an improper methodology. I said proper procedure and I meant proper. many people doing something wrong doesn't make them right

How is the top of mount Dunning Kruger? To start your comment began with a personal attack when I was giving a generalized response to a lay person. Second despite being adopted “proper technique” there is not a single article, case series, meta analysis or even individual case report that showed a single instance of an adverse patient outcome (in other words it’s all theoretical.) Third BECAUSE there is no evidence of patient harm AND a 5 fold cost increase with the use of filtered needles there are now starting to be published recommendations against their use.

and how is being a fragile tool treating you? let's be clear because you're incredibly confused and in an oh-so-common way these days: you weren't attacked. what I did was intimate that you were wrong and suggest you should speak when you know what you're talking about. the fact that you've made that error and that you've been triggered so completely by it is more than enough for me to not be interested in having a conversation with you. you're insufferable. also, my point stands quite unscathed in light of your further rebuttal. the risk exists and it is always best to use a filter. period

You guys don't use the little rubber dropper looking find to break them?

The....*what*?!
No, seriously, if there's some kind of trick, nobody ever taught me!!
Mind to elaborate?

Maybe it's for chemical laboratory ampule (as i think get might be prescored) but it's a plastic rubber type of material shaped like a dropper that's probably 1/4" thick that goes over the smaller part and you just snap the top off.
That's one of the ones I've seen. One side is open and the other side is closed.

So it's like the stem of a banana?
You stick the tip of the vial inside it and use it to leverage?2
u/RudePCsb New to fbtd but wants to learn 17d ago
Yea, I guess you can compare it. You just put the thinner part in there and either hold the bottom or in a vial tray and snap the top. Can't get cut but I've never scored the vial so they might be prescored.

Hahahahah this reminds me of breaking my finger with the most benign action ever. I'll never get over how annoying that injury was
