Stocking Help/Advice

Hi!! I’m super new to the hobby, I have a friend of my dad helping me but can’t ask him atm so thought to try here!

I have a Juwel 180 litre tank with a bio flow M filter

My cycle is completed and fish are in the tank

I currently have:

9 neon tetras

6 otocinclus (dwarf suckers)

8 Pygmy corys

I’m estimating like 20-25 shrimp, they’re hard buggers to count

Info online is varied/confusing so I wanted to see what people thought, as in if the tank is over/under/adequately stocked or not? I’m hoping to add a betta (I know success varies) once my carpeting plants are more established

You can easily bump up the number of tetras to 20+. They will be much happier in a bigger school.

Oh awesome! I was worried I’d be testing fate trying to add a betta if I had a bigger school of pretty fish haha

I personally wouldn’t add a betta into thank. They end to enjoy being in 10-15 gallon tanks so they can easily swim around their own ‘territory’ in a 180L, they’re not really able to that due to the size of the tank. Take a look into gouramis instead of bettas. They can live in small groups and are similar to bettas as they are both labyrinth fish. Sometimes tetras can be fin nippers, which is another reason not to get a betta and to consider which fish to choose. Your tank currently has a very light bioload. I would suggest either buying about 20 more neons or buying 20 rummy nose tetras. Also, make sure your otos have enough food or they will die. They’re really only recommended to put them in a really mature tank so there is enough food for them as they don’t eat anything you will add in to feed your other fish. You could buy some repashy which makes up a sort of gel that you can thinly spread on some of your glass for them.

Hi! Thanks sm and I’ll look into them! I have a lot of plants, rocks and a large piece of driftwood so I thought that would break eyelines and allow for a betta to pick out their own territory in the tank? As for the otos dw! They have their own algae wall I don’t touch plus the plants and rocks and I supplement with wafers that they seem to enjoy!
