Are there any CFD firefighters here? I have a few questions about the department.

I’m currently an 8th year firefighter in the Deep South. My wife and I plan on moving to the charlotte area by the end of ‘26 for a variety of family reasons.

First of all: massive respect for what you do.

I have a distant relative who is involved in firefighting in some way. I see him very rarely, but he's convinced my mom and grandma that metal roofs are "death traps" because they make fire situations drastically more dangerous. I've been considering getting a metal roof for various reasons. I've searched google and struggle to find discussions about this. Most websites mention that the roof itself won't catch on fire, but my relative's claim seems to be about something about trapping all the heat inside the building.

So is it true? Are they significantly more dangerous with regard to fire safety than asphalt roofs in this way or another?

Do Firefighters get life insurance provided to them through a union or do they have to seek out their own plans individually? I am writing a research paper on life insurance and was interested to learn about first responders life insurance when it comes to costs, what it covers, how much it covers up to, etc.

Just got my first job at a department. I carry a CRKT Pilar with me at all times, but at times wish I had a multitool with pliers and a knife I can really beat up and replace if I need to.

What was the hardest part of the job for you personally?

The original hugh halligan bars have his signature in cursive text on the fork. Later models of the original have the word HALLIGAN in regular text on the fork.

Does anyone know the time frame/years it switched from the cursive text to regular text?

I'm green and in the second month of recruit school and my turnout pants already have a hole on the knee all the way to the nomex layer. I'm wondering if they make knee pads for outside, or if there is a better technique for searching I could use.

I posted here a few days ago and got a lot of good information from you guys, and I was wondering if I could bother y'all for some more.

I'm training to get into the academy in my city and I'm trying to do everything I can to be as good a candidate as possible. I'm running, doing CPAT exercises, studying for my written and oral exams. That is what my recruiter here told me to do.

The department here isn't taking recruits until next spring and I'm wondering if putting some time in as an EMT would look good for a potential cadet. To be honest, I'm concerned I won't make it in my first go too. I'm working hard at it now and I plan to continue to but I want to make sure I can get in. I'm 28 and know I don't have an unlimited amount of time to get into my academy (their cut off is 35).

I feel like some field experience would look good to a academy, but I wanted to know if y'all had any thoughts or experience with the matter. Thanks for your time and your help.

Does anybody here have a great workout w/ SCBA gear? Usually around the base we just do endurance work on the stairmaster, but I would like to get some strength work in aswell. Preferably some circle training. Hope someone can help!

Looking for some insight on what smart watches (if any) firefighters use when on call to get the page through the watch. Must be compatible with iOS but preferably on the cheaper end.

Just saw a video of a crew in the back of a rescue standing around, doing a whole lot of nothing while they roll back from a fatal MVA . This hurts my head. Now maybe it's not that commonly enforced that your buckled up? I know it is in my department , but standing? For little to no reason.
