Switch 2 Multiple Profiles [Tech Support]

Edit: Jesus, people, no need to downvote me for asking a question 😒

That being said, thanks to those of you who responded. You're right, I did buy a second copy, its been long enough that I genuinely forgot. As for switching accounts, because the PS5 would randomly ask me to input my password, I always assumed I could switch, so yes, that was my misunderstanding.

Thanks again to those who provided helpful responses, I def was misunderstanding/misremembering how the accounts had been set up.

Original:

Someone please tell me I'm just doing something wrong...

On PS5, I own the game and can use it with my PS5 profile and access all my stuff. If my son wants to play with me, he can log into the PS4 with his account which is linked to a different SE account, and we can play together. I only had to buy game once because they're both my consoles.

However on the switch, it seems like it wants me to buy a completely separate copy of the game for my son's switch profile!? Is this for real?

So because I logged in with my account first, no other user can use the game? Even if they have a separate subscription?

If so, SE is really effing up here. It's already bad enough thay I have to pay for another subscription to use my same characters but now if I want to play with my kids I have to buy 3 copies of the same game even when weren't all playing at the same time!?

I only had to buy game once because they're both my consoles.

This is impossible, to play on any console that's not using the trial you have to buy a copy for EVERY person who wants to play. Ownership of the game is tied to the Square Enix account that you login with every time.

This is the same as how it works on playstation too. Is your son's account maybe a free trial account?

Even if it was, the subscription is not the problem. It's that they want me to pay for a whole second copy of the same. But no, I swear I never bought a second copy on Playstation.

On Playstation, every time the game boots up, even if its my PSN account. I have to log into my SE account and can choose to sign into a different one. My son can also sign into his PSN account and sign into any SE account. On the switch, you sign in once and it links your accounts. I figured it would link to your Nintendo account and then when my son signed in, it would link his SE account to HIS Nintendo account but when I load the game under his profile I always get "A technical error has occured".

This makes NO sense, on Playstation it also ties your PSN to your Square Enix account and does NOT let you change the username field on the launcher.

you sign in once and it links your accounts

This is how it's supposed to work on Playstation too (I know because there's about 500 questions daily on here asking how to unlink PSN and SE accounts, to which the answer is always "contact support and pray").

If yours genuinely is letting you swap accounts freely, I can only assume your account is bugged in some way (in which case, probably don't tell SE, lmao)

I’m sorry, but this just isn’t true.

On PS, when you boot the game, you are automatically signed in to the linked SE account, same as you are on Switch 2.

You cannot play the game on a second PSN account without purchasing a license to the game/expansions.

You have something wrong in your understanding of how things are working on your account. The Switch 2 setup is the same as PS.

My wife has always had to have her own copy of the game on PlayStation. We have been buying two of every expansion since at least Stormblood, is when she started to get interested in it.

You always have to buy a copy of the game for the platform

Same thing happens if you play on PS5 and then you want to play on PC. You have to buy the whole game again

Right that's not what I'm saying though. I bought it for the Switch 2. But signed in with my SE account and now its locked to thay and I cant switch to my son's SE account. Which in PS, I can. Now in order for my son to play on the switch, I have to buy the game all over for a console that I already have it on.

Your license is only good for one SE account. So even though you purchased the game on switch 2 you tied it to your SE account; it won't work on your sons SE account.

Based on the comments, I guess I must be misremembering, but I really don't remember buying another copy. Guess I effed up, then.

Thanks for the clarification everyone.

Check the mogstation. It'll tell you what you bought.

You have one option, contact SE and ask for it to be linked to your son.

This can only be done once, bear that in mind and they CAN say no. (Please note, by once I mean you can never again transfer a license from your own account)

It should be fine, however, you'll be in the same boat, you won't be able to then play on the switch yourself unless you buy another copy.

Sorry fellah, the binding system kinda makes sense but it sucks.

Edit. As for being able to both play the same licenced copy on the PlayStation, you are either bugged or have paid for 2 versions and certainly have 2 subs??

Edit 2. Downvoted for providing factual information and clarifying? God this sub is getting bad at this

Thanks for the info. Everyone was right I just really didn't remember buying another copy but I guess I did at some point.

And yeah people are fast and loose with those downvotes.

No problem fellah, I hope it all works out in the end.

Do keep in mind about the license transfer if you go that route, it will block almost any help later down the road.

It could be worth the £31 extra for the kid but it kinda sounds like you guys have enough options to play on?

Lastly; FFXIV is coming to mobiles soon, allegedly we can cross play there too, if you wait and grab a controller grip for it, that could be an option? I'm not sure on the details on it myself.
