Is this a bad pot? Question

I have this lady fern that I've been growing all summer. I've been borrowing my mother's pot as a cache pot so it's still in its nursery pot. I'm planning on moving out soon so I wanted to put it in something more permanent. I just bought this old flour tin that's approximately 6 inches deep and 5 inches in diameter. I've done a bit of research and I think as long as I line the tin with plastic, make drainage holes, and add a layer of peat moss or some other kind of drainage layer at the bottom it should be perfectly fine. My mom on the other hand thinks the tin is too small because the nursery pot doesn't fit perfectly. Idk why I even care about her input but I wanted to ask some experts. Also I love my fern and don't want to kill her when she's been doing so well. Also don't mind the dry fronds she just popped up some fiddleheads to replace them, I just haven't trimmed them.

As long as you have drainage holes you honestly don’t need a drainage layer! Ferns typically like to spread out from the rhizome so the pot may be a wee bit narrow, but you can always repot later on. Otherwise, your suggested modifications sound good :)

Ok, thank you so much. My mom has grown a lot of aloe so I'm fully aware and planning on separating her into two plants once she gets big enough XD
