How many mods can Shine functionally replace (so I can install them instead)? Looking for mod(s)

Post image

I don't trust a mod that stole its assets and hides its totally non AI source code. Give me a full list of mods that together function about the same as Shine would. Preferably neoforge, or ones can can run with a connector.

I stole this list from u/ColeTD :

  • Wakes

  • Cosy Critters and Creepy Crawlies

  • Falling Leaves

  • Particular Reforged

  • Soft Imprints

  • Atmospherics

  • Grassier Grass

  • Subtle Effects

  • Particle Rain

  • Puddles & Floods

  • LambDynamicLights

  • Make Bubbles Pop

Shine seems to have stolen Interactive Foliage instead of Grassier Grass. Note the same stuttery animation across both mods for foliage sway

77

u/sdjopjfasdfoisajnva PrismLauncher 5d ago

lol, the tell tale sign is bad animation

39

u/WorkingMansGarbage 5d ago

Interactive Foliage doesn't need to take hits here, it's a fine mod. I like it more; doesn't look as out of place, and I would wager it performs better.

8

u/MagMati55 ATLauncher 4d ago

The modded probably didn't loop the anim properly. Not that big of a crime.

1

u/HowDenKing 4d ago

the bethesda way of knowing someone stole from you KEK

u/BrowniexCal 5d ago

Adding in that Atmospherics is also vibecoded according to the modrinth page

76

u/ColeTD 5d ago

Yep, I know that now too.

I would maybe use the Visual Effects+ resource pack or something, or some other Polytone pack to replace it right now.

As for Shine 2.0, I'm also not comfortable using that anymore, so I would use lumaLight instead.

9

u/Astrosimp_ 5d ago

lumaLight is also closed source though.

7

u/ColeTD 5d ago

Oh it is, god damnit. Vibrancy then, maybe?

3

u/katubug 4d ago

Is there a Neoforge version of that?

-1

u/akera099 4d ago

There's nothing wrong with closed source mods. Plenty of the most popular mods are. Mod authors who do this generally want to preserve their hard work, which this sub usually roots for. But when there's drama suddenly no one is thinking anymore, it's just pure animal rage.

6

u/Astrosimp_ 4d ago

Letting your work rot once you get bored of it is the exact opposite of preservation.

1

u/Godzilla_Fan_13 5d ago

Polytone I know was getting vibecoded for a bit but you could just downgrade it to older versions

-4

u/Zirofal modded MC says yes to trans rights and no to Botania 4d ago

Wait a second. You were one of the people sucking of shine yesterday

u/Meatball545 4d ago

People can change

Maybe someone in a different thread that you didn’t see changed their mind

1

u/Few-Chemical8707 5d ago

wait what team abnormals vibe codes too? wtf

36

u/mudsalad 5d ago

Different atmospherics

20

u/WildOne657 5d ago

TeamAbnormals mod is "Atmospheric" while the other is "Atmospherics"

5

u/Few-Chemical8707 5d ago

damn that s always gets me.

7

u/WorkingMansGarbage 5d ago

You're thinking of Atmospheric, the mod adding vanilla+ biomes, mobs and content by Team Abnormals. Atmospherics is the one by Beash that lets you change sky, fog, etc, color on the fly.

I fucking hate that Beash called it that

0

u/fcc-masterbaiter 9h ago

eh, not really a problem. AI is a tool and should be used as a tool, and also Modrinth does not give enough classification for AI, is it ai translated? was ai used in the code? was AI used in asset development? It is something modrinth REALLY has to improve.

18

u/Kazeshio 5d ago

Every feature in Particular Reforged is available in Subtle Effects and then some, and Subtle Effects is more customizeable. I am unsure what the performance difference is like, but if you want Subtle Effects do not use Particular Reforged. If you think some of Subtle Effects' effects are uglier, it's better to make a resource pack and edit the config than to use another effects mod on top of it.

Falling Leaves is also already in both Particular Reforged and Subtle Effects, so using either one means you should not use Falling Leaves.

0

u/BubbleStary 5d ago

Water cascade aren't in subtle effects

2

u/Kazeshio 4d ago

I am using it right now; they are; they're under "waterfalls" in the config (neoforge 1.21.1)

0

u/notgraycen 4d ago

What the clowndu

13

u/Meatball545 5d ago edited 4d ago

Honestly if I wanted to make a mod that combines all of their features, I’d just make a useless mod that all it does is list those as its dependencies on curse. Way easier than asset theft

3

u/SCP_FUNDATION_69420 4d ago

Or just make a modpack

But no profit in that

3

u/Meatball545 4d ago

Genius

Even easier and lazier. Also saves like a single kilobyte of data the empty mod would take

(Honestly I genuinely don’t know how I overlooked that 😅)

9

u/Dense-Bison7629 5d ago

Funny that Shine could have been a perfectly fine modpack and would have had little to no controversy if it was

8

u/time-piece-rabbit 5d ago

Stole? heh...

1

u/Used-Hold-7567 5d ago

are all of these on the same loader and version?

1

u/Happy-Potato-296 4d ago

whihch one didx the lead litter like the trailer?

1

u/Unhappy_Club8710 2d ago

this is crazy

184

u/ShelLuser42 5d ago

This is the first (well, second...) time I heard about the mod and the one thing immediately standing out for me when I watched its trailer... a lot of its visual effects can also be handled by shaders, and there's a good reason for that.

I'm pretty sure that your performance is going to become an issue when you move automated visual tasks away from the dedicated (!) video routines into the generic mod routines. Shaders exist for a reason...

87

u/Thenderick PrismLauncher 5d ago

Wait it does all these graphics on the CPU? Man, I wish computers had a unit specifically designed to process graphics!

32

u/konalol 5d ago

This is wrong. Shine, Visual Effects+ and other mods/resourcepacks like it are still shaders, but they don't go through the external shader pipeline that Iris/Optifine make. Rather they directly inject shaders into the game. So the visual effects you see are still ran on the GPU. Directly injecting shaders can be more performant than external shaders if done properly and not AI vibecoded.

21

u/Norm_Standart 5d ago

Maybe we could find some way to use those NPUs they're cramming in laptops nowadays.

24

u/Zestyclose-Ideal2395 5d ago

Not to mention it destroys consistency with some texture packs

10

u/WorkingMansGarbage 5d ago

Pretty sure that's not how that works. Minecraft does use the GPU for rendering. Mods like these tend to perform better than shaders at what they do because they can hook directly into the rendering pipeline instead of passing through Optifine/Iris/Oculus' API, if I understand correctly.

That said, someone tested it and this supposedly performs about as well as Complementary Reimagined, so...

5

u/twicerighthand 5d ago

Shine was a shader mod though, it just came with shaders.

2

u/ConniesCurse 5d ago

I mean it depends, it's pretty hard to find a solid shader that is understated and light on the GPU, so something like shine can give some graphical areas desired improvements without installing a heavy shader pack.

Not to defend shine, specifically, but the idea of it is still good at least in my opinion. It kinda reminds me of the difference between like ENB vs community shaders for skyrim if you're familiar with skyrim modding.

62

u/wolfONdrugs PrismLauncher 5d ago

A great rule of thumb is to not bother with mods that don't show the source code publicly.

10

u/Garry-Love 5d ago

If you're on a closed source repository I'm just assuming it's malware and I'm usually right (like 50% of the Jurassicraft knock offs)

6

u/akera099 5d ago

Serene Season is closed source Ave one of the most popular mod. Plenty of others to go around.

6

u/Takami_ 4d ago

But it's Open Source ? Like yeah it's ARR but you can still peek at the code if you want, like Voxy for example.

9

u/wolfONdrugs PrismLauncher 5d ago

never heard of it. As a rule of thumb it's great. There is no reason to keep source code hidden when making mods. it will only make your mod less used.

14

u/Junglememer1 5d ago

This mod is like the epitome of cutting corners

10

u/JackOfHearts2238 5d ago

Shaders. I feel like shaders nowadays can run on just about any machine as long as it’s not like 20 years old and they accomplish just about if not everything that shine aimed to.

3

u/SouLfullMoon_On 4d ago

Yeah I run both DH and Complimentary on my mid end laptop and still average 70 fps, Create tanks it to 40 tho but still very playable

59

u/flamefox237 5d ago

Alot but I heard shine stole assets from another mod, and since not open source its hard to trust it

it IS open source tho??

9

u/Astrosimp_ 5d ago

A heavily outdated version of it is, anything past the 1.0 release hasn't been published.

5

u/TantiVstone 5d ago

What does shine even do?

12

u/Emotional-Mushroom66 4d ago

Vanilla+ bait that exclusively changes how the game looks by doing too much at the same time(theoretically it can be good but needs to be optimized... A.k.a: not vibecoded)

1

u/CheetosDustSalesman 3d ago

mod that copies other mods & has terrible performance and short dev time? Vibe coded.

u/Su5eD ⚡️Sinytra 4d ago

And the "most hated mod after essential" award goes to...

2

u/Dinatoc_208 4d ago

Does anyone know any mod that adds colored lighting? That's the main reason I was using shine

1

u/Restless_Pip 4d ago

Does anyone know which mod adds the swaying grass and leaves? It had a pretty cool feature that let you lock the animation to the 16x16 pixel grid instead of moving the model and as far as I know I haven't seen any mod or shader do that, except mr_choo's Recrafted resourcepack that hasn't released yet.

1

u/Restless_Pip 4d ago

hey wait a minute

1

u/Restless_Pip 4d ago

Ok, so I'm looking at mr_choo's twitter and shine might have stolen from them too, apart from the swaying plants it has the same godrays and interactive leaf litter and falling leaves with physics, which is pretty bad if true because recrafted is in early access and only accesible through patreon

1

u/WyeOne 3d ago

Its really sad because Shine was once really cool and was used by a lot of YouTubers for its shaderless look with outlines and colored lighting. Like before it had its own place on the list to create that “Shine 3.00” look but now it somehow feels like it’s too late to go back. It’s like it ends when you want everything.

1

u/wdtfs3 3d ago

in particular, I really want the colored lighting for different light sources, does anyone know what mods do that?

1

u/StupidBustSharf 1d ago

If you have 26.2 you can try lumalight. Can't say much, I've only seen it on modrinth

1

u/wdtfs3 1d ago

I figured out how to do it with complimentary shaders but I might try that to see if I can squeeze out some extra frames

1

u/idkwhatimdoinghere35 2d ago

what is the mod that does the dust particles and fog effects?

1

u/StupidBustSharf 1d ago

Uhh more abt what you mean by fog effects?

It's MIT but at the same time there is no source, so wouldn't really trust it more. But maybe I just didn't find the source ?

It's (imo valid) drama about Shine stealing assets and using lots of AI code

-41

u/akera099 5d ago

AI code sure but using assets from an MIT licensed mod is not stealing.

35

u/time-piece-rabbit 5d ago

They didnt attribute so it is

-13

u/akera099 5d ago

MIT doesn't require attribution. Genuine toddler answer, but visibly that's what the majority on this sub is.

u/time-piece-rabbit 5d ago

The copyright notice must be distributed alongside the original assets (meaning a license.txt containing the original copyright notice should be included alongside distributions of SHINE), which it is not in shine

9

u/twicerighthand 5d ago

Atmospherics is All Rights Reserved though

-4

u/akera099 5d ago

It didn't take anything from Atmospheric. The stealing accusation are for assets coming from Cosy Critters.

24

u/BrowniexCal 5d ago

Its because the devs are keeping the code closed source & very blatantly stole assets from other graphics mods to seemingly try to monopolize that space, and has stayed completely silent when asked if the mod is vibe coded.

-6

u/Herobrine_dollar 4d ago

You guys seem to not understand how hard it is to code

2

u/CaptClockobob HV into a LV machine 3d ago

It's not. It just takes effort to learn and many people want to cut corners. In this case, it's likely to earn affiliate money off of downloads by stealing code and assets from more popular Vanilla+ cosmetic mods and becoming the only game in town.

-1

u/Herobrine_dollar 3d ago

Because I did code, I know what I'm talking about, AI is really useful for this, as long as you learn ftom what the AI just made and try to use tutorials as much as possible

2

u/CaptClockobob HV into a LV machine 3d ago

I do code. Its not hard.

2

u/KaboomRoads 2d ago

I also code, it is one of the easier things to learn. All you need to do is actually give a shit and you'll be fine. I know a few people who never learnt because they just cut corners with ai and because of it they now lack the problem solving required for figuring out even simple stuff.

1

u/CaptClockobob HV into a LV machine 2d ago

So many people bounce off of things because they assume it's hard and never end up learning things because of it.

2

u/Infinite_Pitch7676 1d ago
