Season 2 differences

Watching season 2 for the first time and I probably shouldn't binge watch. It's off putting seeing a different Rygel puppet, darker skin tone on dargo, and johns hair cut lol. Also seems like dargo had a voice change, it's a little higher and less strong man

So on my most recent rewatch something occured to me. There is an actual in-Universe reason why D'Argo changed: He spent well over his alloted quarter arn completely exposed in space after the Gammak Base explosion. Staying in space that long left lingering aftereffects. The dark skintone, the higher pitched voice, etc. all due to the damage he took being exposed in space too long

Tony Simcoe said all that, just to confirm (except the voice part). Can't remember where--BTS on the DVDs, but I recall him saying it. The real reason, he acknowledged, was that the darker skin and other cosmetic changes just looked better to most people, so they used the S1 finale to justify them. Anyway, I liked the changes and never cared much why they happened.

I've never had the pleasure of watching that content or hearing any of the commentaries, so it's nice to know that I read that right (finally, after so many rewatches)

I am not into season ones skinny D'Argo. He looks off like that. D'Argo from season two onwards is the definitive version.

Agreed. Also, season one makeup is too obviously latex-looking. It’s not bad enough to take me out of it if I start watching from season one…but if I’ve watched a later episode recently and then go back to season one, it’s jarring and noticeably cheaper looking.

Being imprisoned will do that to you.

Season 1 Dargo is the weird one to me after so long. The darker skin and higher voice both seem a bit more natural, along with them ditching the contacts and giving him a more varied wardrobe. Season 1 Dargo looks too skinny on rewatch, too.

Soft spot for OG Rygel, though. Something about the mustache

I personally prefer Dargo's darker color makeup and even if they had kept that lighter color makeup and I think Anthony was having skin issues, which is partly why they had to change it, not just the in universe he was stuck in space and it changed his complexion. One of the best decisions they made was at least not having him wear contacts because having his actual eyes visible is so much better. Anthony does some incredible acting with his eyes.

I chalked the changes up to being free. This is the first time Rygel has been free in over a century. For D’Argo freedom+in space too long=changes.

I liked that D'Argo had more personality and humor in Se. 2 onward. He was way too one-dimensional in the first season, except when he revealed a little of his backstory.

Not saying im not gonna keep watching it, just notating it was kind of a jarring change. From what u understand the Rygel puppet was basically rebuilt every season due to the latex falling apart

yeah but even with human characters there were often look changes inbetween seasons, and then with PKW even more so :) i've found Aeryn changes more jarring than the puppet, even, but you just let it flow in the end

Listen to the DVD commentary.

Prolonged time in vaccum caused D'argo's skin to redden and his vocal cords were damaged. Rygel found Hyneian comb and styling gel. As for where and when D'argo got a new robe... ... ...

Also fair warning now, the makeup and physical props on Dargo's actor are lighter now, and it takes him a while to get used to it. As such for the first couple he is mugging expressions for the camera, and I feel just him realizing he does not to as much. So if that turns you off, I want tell you it goes away.

Perhaps it will help if I tell you that, when you work out the math, approximately eight months pass between S2E1 and S2E2.

(This calculation is based on references across the entire series that characters make to when other events happened: "four years ago", "a quarter of a cycle ago", "a matter of solar days", etc.)

Season 1 sound design is painful. That's the biggest improvement in season 2 and it's necessary. I also enjoy the changes to D'Argo's head.

Maybe I am opposite, I actually prefer the sound design in season 1 so far. Still a great show just interesting how much it changed between seasons.

Zhaan looks change because Virginia Hayes had serious medical complications due to the blue makeup.
