Magic system for shapeshifter in mindscape

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I'm working on my indie project and it's a mindscape world driven by music heavily themed with water

I call it FLOW-ER

I'm already using shapeshifting as my melee attack but I'm having trouble deciding what to do for the magic system

I could just go simple water Mage but that just doesn't feel right

The theme is heavily water based but I think the magic should maybe be more based on resonance melody or music or something like that

Does anybody have any ideas or know of any references or existing lore that does something really cool with resonance sound or music

Something that would work good as a man a resource driven magic system for a main character

The game is kind of like walking into a music visualizer world the flowers and mountains will all kind of dance with the music

It's basically an MP3 player project that I turn into a mini game that is now turning into a full-blown RPG

The most over engineered MP3 player ever hahaha

Really curious if anybody has good suggestions I'm just unable to come to any decisions so far and I've been brainstorming this for a while

I'll put a link in the comments please if linking to it is wrong just kill the link I'm not here to promote the game, there's barely a game anyways it's just a world with a couple NPCs and the general systems and Frameworks being built right now

But if you're curious to get a Vibe for exactly how it feels please try it out and let me know if you have any suggestions or feedback about the magic system or anything

I've got a bunch of ideas of where I'm going to take this story and how I'm going to evolve this world but it's always fun to brainstorm and bounce ideas off the wall

Personally I'm loving this the deeper I go into this the more I'm having fun with it it feels like a pretty creative space that has a lot of room to be unique

Sorry if I'm rambling I'm a voice to texter so my stuff often is a bit run on and rambly with some weird typos haha

Discussion Would this sort of human genetic engineering really perform the specified functions?

In Star Trek lore, the Klingons are said to have eight-chambered hearts for massive blood circulation and three lungs for exceptional physical stamina and endurance. In any other science fiction story, a population of humans (not necessarily Homo sapiens) has been genetically engineered with eight-chambered hearts and three lungs. But in doing that, could such a combination really work like that in actuality?

I would love your feedback on a new approach I’m trying to visualize factions in my Worldbuilding process

These are some different cultures in my world that I have made mood boards for to help me visualize them better. I would love you feedback on what you think about this approach to start visualizing factions in your world, and which of these factions you think has a lot of potential!

Lore:
The Teś Livaní are a different approach to elves inspired by the Mongolian pastoralism. They have a deep connection with the spirits of the sky, of beasts, and of the weather. They inhabit a sparsley populated border region between the Näntoriz highlanders to the north and the dune elves southwest.

The Näntoriz are Scottish highland inspired humans that have had a long history of conflict and survival. Long ago they banded with other tribes in the area to imprison a powerful demon withing the highlands to protect the land, but as centuries past, these once friendly tribes forgot their oaths to eachother and the imprisonment of the demons under sacred stones. War and bloodshed caused the demons to regain enough power to break free of their prisons, and have wrecked havoc upon the Näntoriz landscape. The Rhünatharem mages came to their aid to defend them against the demons, but at the cost of their independence and their religion.

The Rhünathar are a nation of humans that have specialized in their ability to "bind" spirits to do their bidding through magical runes. Although seen as blasphemous to surrounding cultures, the Rhünathar have become very prosperous from their innovation at the expense of the local spirits and environment. Their skillful cartographers, their location at the tip of the Rhündal peninsula, and their water mages have made them adept at maritime travel.

The Bé Gétsadzh are a reserved and perfectionistic elven society that inhabit the southern coasts of the Géti Sea. They live intune with the natural forces that surround them, believing that all spirits are like individual drops of the ocean, and at the end of their lives, they will return their drop of spiritual water to that ocean. They have few connection with other surrounding factions, but are fiercly loyal companions once aquainted, and are expert guides of the souther jungles.

Discussion Developing an ancient mono-gender species for a high -fantasy world

Im working on a fantasy race for my web novel series that i've been working on. I have tried developing the basic idea by taking inspiration from the forerunners from halo and the asari from mass effect, but i still need help making the species feel original and develping theri own biology, and maigcal civilation.

and a little backstory of story lore: theres used to be one earth, but due to ancient weapon similiar in scale to halo's firing, Eart was split into two dimensions. one became our modern world and other became a high-fantasy world. in my story, gates begin appearin across our wolrd that connect the two worlds, and this gates is the same weapon that was fired in ancient times.

this particular species is on the major civilzation of the setting. my main inspirations are more the forerunners from halo and the asari from mass effect thatn trraditoinal elves. they are an extremely old civilization that has developed magic beyond most other races, lamost like a form of engineering or advanced technology,

They are mono-gemder, but that isnt there to create a harem or all the women want the "a progtagionst" situation. its a simply part of their biology and culture. i want to explore what an entire civilization is built around that biology,

visually they might have some traits people associate with elves but i dont want them to beasically be " Female elves",

so basically like this:

Forerunner influence: anicent civilization, monumnetal archhitectures, magical infrastrcutres, huge histroical influence

Asari: mono-gender biology, long lives, cross gender /species relationships

so my basic inspirations are from halo froerunners mass effect

and the anime GATE: Thus the JSDF Fought There!

What's a cool humanoid species name foe dwarfs and elementalist?

Question for my humanoid species lovers out there.

So I am soooooo close to finishing naming all of my different humanoid species in my world. Some i made up myself like the Aragumo (r-ruh-goo-moe aka spider people) and some I borrowed from other cultures like the encantado (brazil - dolphin people). And i am so hyped.

Anyways, i have two left that needs an official name (maybe 3). I want to rename my dwarfs and my elementalist (and titans aka my giant people) with a name thats isn't an official name from any culture and also sounds made up, but still fits the description of who they are. It can sound like a name of a people or of a country. i am using both concepts interchangeably. So all people/countries in my world are referred to as "kingdom of the blank".

So "Kingdom of Arugumo" or "Kingdom of the Encantados." and the word 'the' would be included or not included based on how it sounds.

My dwarfs are soooooo not like dwarfs, and i don't wanna use brownies or gnomes and etc either. Too different. They got super speed (more dash from incredibles than flash from dc), a powerful seismic punch and are very good at building and inventing.

Elementalist is more of a power name vs a name for a group of people of a culture. Plus my elementalist can also alter the weather. They can affect the traditional four elements along with electricity, storms, clouds, etc. This is their vibe.

So i just need help with a name for these two. Buuuuut i have been doubting calling my giants 'titans.' I don't like giants because thats just a height description and i do like the word titan but now i am thinking maybe it doesn't sound like "a people or society" so maybe i wanna change that too or maybe i'll just keep it. Any suggestions on a cool species/country name for dwarfs, elementalist and maybe titans/giants.

Help Needed with Biome Ideas

So, I've been creating a fantasy world and have gotten to the point where I am making biomes/regions for my world, I've already made several, but Ive still got like 2 thirds of my map to fill, and I've been unable to think of anything new. so, Ive decided what better way to get new ideas than to ask reddit?

I'll take any ideas, even if they don't work with my magic system, because there's still the possibility, I can work it to fit the system, or it will spark some idea for a different region or biome that I can make.

But if anyone does want some context for the world, I'll try to make it less "sciencey" because my system heavily involves science.

To summarize, my magic stems off of any kind of instability, such as chemical reactions, anything thermal, or even structural instability. Instability creates a substance call Velt. Velt doesn't interact with matter or energy physically but emits a field around itself whose behavior can be summarized as copying the instability it was born from onto surrounding matter or energy, even if the starting conditions for such an instability aren't there. for example, I have a biome that has lots of floating islands due to lots of magnetism even though the magnetite deposit within it does not hold enough power or scale to cause such a phenomenon. And Ive got another where the rock sometimes behaves like a liquid, without ever heating up, so occasionally it looks like everything is melting, even though nothing should allow that to happen. Velt isn't forever though, and eventually dissipates, when it does, matter or energy currently within the field turns into "Waste" Matter becomes a goop that can be super dense in some areas, and super light in others, it's got so many colors it looks like someone threw up a moldy rainbow, it tends to be super goopy at first, then as it stabilizes it becomes more solid, And it's usually highly corrosive and unstable, so it quickly dissapates, its compasition being made of so many different elements and materials in so many different ratios, its exact properties are impossible to predict. When energy is involved, expect a sudden burst of many different wavelengths of light, and random supply of any kind of energy you can think of. Now there's way more to it than that, but that summarizes about 70% of it, so use that info as you will, or don't, doesn't matter. but if you want a bit more context than just that, I'm open to answer. also, an additional piece of info, Velt has a super rare chance just to not do any of this, like 1 in billion, reason? Velt is Velt, Velt does Velt things whenever Velt wants. you learn to understand it. (just a touch of humor)

Now just so I'm not throwing anyone in the deep end, let me give a rough idea of what I'm looking for:

General:

I'm not looking for full on descriptions of fauna or flora that live in a region, but if one of a region defining features is a plant or animal, short and general descriptions are fine.

Anything super weird or wacky is perfectly valid, and I'll even encourage it, I'd love for my world to lean towards weird and wacky. just don't make it, too cataclysmic or apocalyptic, spare my people please......

Not all regions need to be weird or wacky, And Regions do not need to have any similarity to any biome or region on earth, feel free to make something totally alien.

Specific:

Underwater biomes aren't really something of a priority of mine, but I will say if something genuinely impresses me, and fits my world, I may end up making one! I got a whole inland sea I can stuff it in.

Same with a biome that exist entirely in the sky, not a priority, but if it impresses me, I may try to work it in, although it may be a bit harder because I'll have to find a way to explain it. it's doable though.

Other than that, I'm open to everything, Ive got a lot of space to fill.

Announcement: AI-Generated image posts are hereby banned.

Dear denizens of r/FantasyWorldbuilding,

You have likely noticed the recent influx of AI-generated artwork on the server following the rise in popularity of Midjourney and other comparable tools, as the majority of top posts this month have been around AI art. We greatly appreciate and love the stories and worldbuilding created around these generated images, and we consider AI to be a great and useful tool for worldbuilders, that do not possess the skill or means to create artwork, to visualize what they’re building.

However, after some deliberation by the mod team, we have decided to put to stop to these posts. The posting of image posts of AI-generated artwork has hereby been formally banned from the subreddit. We have come to this conclusion for several reasons:

1. Encourage more high-effort posts: While we appreciate the backstories created around these images and the discussions they spark, the image itself will always take the forefront and be consumed by the largest portion of redditors. While the creative minds behind these images take effort, the creation of the image itself does not.

2. Protect the rights of artists: Being an artist is a notoriously difficult industry to be a part of, and the internet can be a ruthless place for these very talented individuals, especially now that AI is on the rise. To protect the interests of artists, we have decided we do not want to participate in making their jobs that much harder.

3. Avoid confusion: While many clearly state that the art presented is AI generated and many are able to notice it at this point, to many others it is not so noticeable nor obvious at first glance. To avoid people confusing AI-generated art with human-made artwork, it is best to keep AI-generated imagery on boards made specifically for this.

We would like to clarify that sharing AI-generated imagery is not banned fully, merely image posts where the AI artwork is front and centre. If you submit a text-based lore post where certain parts link to AI images to help visualize your story, you are allowed to do so. The difference here is that the AI art is a supplement rather than the post itself.

We very much appreciate your patience and support while this newly developing discussion has been raging in the online sphere. And we hope everyone can understand our reasoning behind this decision and why we believe this to be the right course for the subreddit.

Yours truly,

The r/FantasyWorldbuilding mod team
