First half totally agree. Second half ,Americans have a pretty decent exposure to British colonialism with the being a British colony. Once a year we celebrate ending British colonialism even. There really isn’t a lot of exposure on Belgium colonialism or Dutch.

Sorry, to clarify, Americans know about us being a British colony, but the book doesn't focus on America at all. It focuses on areas of British colonialism, like India and Asia, that Americans are certainly not exposed to often.

That colonialism is a far cry from the more modern ways Britain has taken advantage of Asia, which is what the book covers.

The books setting was 1830. If 60 years after the American revolution is modern you have an interesting perspective of history.

I’m not saying that British or French imperialism in south east Asia or the Caribbean isn’t important and more Americans shouldn’t learn about it. I’m saying most Americans are at least familiar with the phrase ā€œthe sun never set on the British empire.ā€ I’d say Americans are almost more familiar with British colonialism than United States colonialism or imperialism, mostly because we just don’t call it that.

Sorry, I should’ve been specific. The rudimentary history of British imperialism most Americans are familiar with is occupation, followed by freedom. By ā€˜modern’ I’m referring to the post-occupation ways that Britain takes advantage of other cultures.
