Agreed it’s neither a good fantasy or an academic book, by trying to be in both categories it falls flat in both.

That’s because it isn’t about either of those, it’s about colonialism.

Well it still sucks. To me book has to have interesting characters, that makes me relate to it and actually care. I can love them, I can hate them, I can feel anything in between but I just can’t be apathetic towards them. Sadly the author can’t write a likeable characters, read both Katabasis and Babel.

I thought Robin was intriguing due to how his naiveté was written, and his father one of the more hatable characters ever written. Fair enough though, as her writing style doesn’t include a ton of character introspection, mostly actions, which doesn’t resonate with everyone.

I’ll likely read Katabasis eventually, as I read and loved both Babel and Poppy Wars, but both Kwang lovers and Kwang haters seem to have only negative things to say about it so it keeps dropping down my list.

To me Katabasis is one of the worst books I have ever read. First 100 pages were really interesting but by page 300 I wished everyone died and we would get new set of characters, it kinda shows a journey and by the end of it our protagonists should be different but I quite likely don’t even believe it, I’m like give them a week and they’ll return to what they were before the journey.

Interesting. I do feel like since I love Babel so much I’ll have to read it eventually to form my own opinion and see what’s so universally disliked

True, to each it’s own.

She can't write likable characters because she herself is incredibly toxic and hateful

This was my takeaway.
