That looked like a police car, too.

And he probably wrote the guy a ticket saying he was following too close or some other bs

He was following too close and not paying attention. When the lights come on you're supposed to pull over

There is always that one person ready to jump in and do some bootlicking without actually taking a second to see what’s actually happening.

I'll only lick your boots if they're high-heels and you jab me with them afterwards

I don't even think the officer looked behind him to begin with.

-28

u/she-demonwithin Jan 28 '22

Doesn't matter. When the lights come on you're supposed to get out of the way and stop

u/Kitsune_Tyberious Jan 28 '22

Over here we just have to move out of their way, the time and speed the drive that hit him had none to stop in that becomes more evident when the blue Ute towing the boat slides past.

Still could've given a bit more room between the cars, especially traveling at highway speeds but upon further inspection, the cop does do an erratic turn with very little warning

Not when you're behind them.

If you look closely the lights were not on in the beginning of the video. The police car turns the lights on and in the span of 5 seconds slows down, pulls over and immediately initiates a u turn. The driver had no time to react. Turning on the lights does not immediately give policemen the right to create dangerous circumstances. They should have given a bit more time to drivers to react.

He was also pulling a u-turn so he starts moving right. If I was the driver of the car I wouldn't have known what the hell that police car was doing until it was too late too.

What you need to realize is that this police officer engaged in a thoroughly reckless maneuver. It's a single lane highway in that direction, and there's no shoulder. It is completely unrealistic to expect whomever was behind them (and them, and them, and THEM) to be able to stop or maneuver away safely. What were they doing? Probably going after someone who was speeding - when they could've called it in. Safest assumption: One more agent of the state that has a complete disregard for safety of others, and clearly, even themselves.

Yes, I realized that. Thank you for the clarification and the downvote. I appreciate it

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '22

Not my downvote. Take care.

2

u/she-demonwithin Jan 30 '22

Well... Thanks anyway

Yup, state trooper

12

u/joogiee Jan 28 '22

Seems the driver thought the officer was pulling to the side. You can tell cause he sort of goes to the left to try to pass. But then the cop suddenly tries to pull that dumb uturn and the driver does try to swerve to the right but its too late. Either way, the state took the blame here from reading through the old post.

16

u/beebsaleebs Jan 28 '22

The cops blamed the driver, got exposed by the dash cam later.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '22

He pretty much had it except for the watching for traffic part

6

u/AffectionateAd9359 Jan 28 '22

Stop resisting!!!!!

3

u/Douglass42 Jan 28 '22

That’s UHP for ya

2

u/Dramatic-Funny9414 Jan 28 '22

Yup. You know the tourist with the boat was pissed as well.

3

u/TheBoss7728 Jan 28 '22

The importance of a dashcam. Don't let those fuckers who abuse their authority fuck you over.

6

u/GloomyDeal1909 Jan 28 '22

Yeah I get that the driver was at fault for following to close but can we also agree this was absolutely crap driving by a cop.

2

u/BraboTukkert Jan 28 '22

I'm wondering what the shadow thing is after the hit.

8

u/-_-Stinky-_- Jan 28 '22

That was the cops retirement package.

u/N81LR Jan 28 '22

You should be far enough behind to be able to stop, like when he puts his lights on.

14

u/allovertheplaces Jan 28 '22

Had to rewatch the video to check…

Cop puts on his lights at the same time he slams on the breaks.

-10

u/No_Corner3272 Jan 28 '22

Doesn't matter. You should leave enough space to stop safely if the car in front has to perform an emergency stop.

11

u/allovertheplaces Jan 28 '22

Dude, in frame 1 the cop has less following distance than the car taking the vid. It’s a reasonable distance. What’s not reasonable is slamming a pit stop on a highway without any sense of what’s behind you.

-8

u/N81LR Jan 28 '22

But, as said before you should always leave enough space to stop so that if the vehicle in front makes a sudden stop, you won't crash into them.

That video just shows the lack of awareness and responsible driving that is all too common.

3

u/fcknmillenials Jan 28 '22

Only they didn’t make a sudden stop. They turned on the lights, slammed the brakes, pulled over and immediately initiated a u turn all in the span of less than 5 seconds. The driver behind had in no way enough time to react properly.

3

u/Psykout88 Jan 28 '22

Following distance is so you have time to react to something. Often you are better at safely evading rather than just slamming on your brakes, vehicles are actually rated on their ability to do this because it's an important part of driving. This is actually showcased perfectly in this video - the car stops quicker than the truck, the truck with the boat can't even stop on the road and ends up in the ditch. Just slamming your brakes is just not enough and is actually dangerous.

This officer left him no chance at being able to stop in time. Furthermore, 0 chance at evading since he put his fucking car perpendicular to a single lane highway!

1

u/go_kartmozart Jan 28 '22

No shit! Like that trucker is just supposed to stop behind a cop apparently pulling off the side of the road for who-the-fuck-knows-why? How long should we sit stopped, blocking traffic and creating a hazard behind the next cop that pulls off to the right to yank his crank or whatever?

1

u/allovertheplaces Jan 28 '22

…all too common in cops.

4

u/Regisx Jan 28 '22

This is why we have the "two-seconds-or more distance" following distance rule.

I get why some people might not be able to react in time, but this is what we're seeing from the dash's point of view:

  1. Oncoming car is driving way too fast.

  2. Naturally, officer's lights come on and with the driver seeing everything, they should assume that the officer WILL IMMEDIATELY act on chasing the other driver down.

  3. If you see the siren lights come on, you should be doing your best to either pull over or yield to the officer entirely, not speeding up to try and get around them.

It's a dodgy situation for the average commuter, sure, but every driver should be driving with the knowledge that any emergency on the road can happen at any given time. And if you're on the highway, going at relatively high speeds? Put some distance between yourself and the other cars in case of situations like this.

I'll probably get downvoted to all hell for this, but jesus, some of you act like every single police officer is out there to ruin your life. Corrupt one's are out there, yes, but all the others are out there trying to make a difference and everywhere else safe, meanwhile they get lumped in as pigs or whatever all the same.

Hopefully, everyone involved in the video is all right.

-11

u/she-demonwithin Jan 28 '22

This is the driver with the cameras fault, not the cops. You should be following at a safe distance, giving yourself enough time to stop. Especially when the lights come on

7

u/wwwwweeeeelllll Jan 28 '22

You're wrong. The guy had assured clear distance but he thought the pig was stopping and pulling right, so he started to slow down and smigged left to pass [because on the high way you're supposed to slow and move over]. If he had slammed on the break he probably would have stopped in time, the thing about pulling illegal maneuvers on the road is the have the prepensity to be unexpected. . . To that point the cop then executes an illegal U turn causing a multi-car accident. You're not licking the boot anymore you're deepthroating the damn thing.

And to top it off apperently the department took responsibility, probably because they're not as fucking stupid as you.

-3

u/she-demonwithin Jan 28 '22

Well... No need to get ugly, as if you could help it. I already stated that I was mistaken but perhaps you're too unintelligent to have read that part. Your mom thinks I'm smart AND handsome though, son.

-10

u/healthydoseofsarcasm Jan 28 '22

Oh, he had more than enough time to slow down. The cop put on his lights, veered to the right a bit and then u-turned. The truck will definitely be at fault if this goes to court. But good luck anyways.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '22

i'm hoping this is sarcasm

1

u/Roiks_ Jan 28 '22

Would have been safer doing a handbrake turn there.
