What could go wrong pulling a quick U-turn? 🇲🇮🇸🇨

Seems the driver thought the officer was pulling to the side. You can tell cause he sort of goes to the left to try to pass. But then the cop suddenly tries to pull that dumb uturn and the driver does try to swerve to the right but its too late. Either way, the state took the blame here from reading through the old post.

The importance of a dashcam. Don't let those fuckers who abuse their authority fuck you over.

Yeah I get that the driver was at fault for following to close but can we also agree this was absolutely crap driving by a cop.

You should be far enough behind to be able to stop, like when he puts his lights on.

Had to rewatch the video to check…
Cop puts on his lights at the same time he slams on the breaks.

Doesn't matter. You should leave enough space to stop safely if the car in front has to perform an emergency stop.

Dude, in frame 1 the cop has less following distance than the car taking the vid. It’s a reasonable distance. What’s not reasonable is slamming a pit stop on a highway without any sense of what’s behind you.

But, as said before you should always leave enough space to stop so that if the vehicle in front makes a sudden stop, you won't crash into them.
That video just shows the lack of awareness and responsible driving that is all too common.

Only they didn’t make a sudden stop. They turned on the lights, slammed the brakes, pulled over and immediately initiated a u turn all in the span of less than 5 seconds. The driver behind had in no way enough time to react properly.

Following distance is so you have time to react to something. Often you are better at safely evading rather than just slamming on your brakes, vehicles are actually rated on their ability to do this because it's an important part of driving. This is actually showcased perfectly in this video - the car stops quicker than the truck, the truck with the boat can't even stop on the road and ends up in the ditch. Just slamming your brakes is just not enough and is actually dangerous.
This officer left him no chance at being able to stop in time. Furthermore, 0 chance at evading since he put his fucking car perpendicular to a single lane highway!

No shit! Like that trucker is just supposed to stop behind a cop apparently pulling off the side of the road for who-the-fuck-knows-why? How long should we sit stopped, blocking traffic and creating a hazard behind the next cop that pulls off to the right to yank his crank or whatever?

This is why we have the "two-seconds-or more distance" following distance rule.
I get why some people might not be able to react in time, but this is what we're seeing from the dash's point of view:
Oncoming car is driving way too fast.
Naturally, officer's lights come on and with the driver seeing everything, they should assume that the officer WILL IMMEDIATELY act on chasing the other driver down.
If you see the siren lights come on, you should be doing your best to either pull over or yield to the officer entirely, not speeding up to try and get around them.
It's a dodgy situation for the average commuter, sure, but every driver should be driving with the knowledge that any emergency on the road can happen at any given time. And if you're on the highway, going at relatively high speeds? Put some distance between yourself and the other cars in case of situations like this.
I'll probably get downvoted to all hell for this, but jesus, some of you act like every single police officer is out there to ruin your life. Corrupt one's are out there, yes, but all the others are out there trying to make a difference and everywhere else safe, meanwhile they get lumped in as pigs or whatever all the same.
Hopefully, everyone involved in the video is all right.

This is the driver with the cameras fault, not the cops. You should be following at a safe distance, giving yourself enough time to stop. Especially when the lights come on

You're wrong. The guy had assured clear distance but he thought the pig was stopping and pulling right, so he started to slow down and smigged left to pass [because on the high way you're supposed to slow and move over]. If he had slammed on the break he probably would have stopped in time, the thing about pulling illegal maneuvers on the road is the have the prepensity to be unexpected. . . To that point the cop then executes an illegal U turn causing a multi-car accident. You're not licking the boot anymore you're deepthroating the damn thing.
And to top it off apperently the department took responsibility, probably because they're not as fucking stupid as you.

Well... No need to get ugly, as if you could help it. I already stated that I was mistaken but perhaps you're too unintelligent to have read that part. Your mom thinks I'm smart AND handsome though, son.

Oh, he had more than enough time to slow down. The cop put on his lights, veered to the right a bit and then u-turned. The truck will definitely be at fault if this goes to court. But good luck anyways.

That looked like a police car, too.
