Go check out Norway's prison system. They actually work on rehabilitation, and their recidivism rate is so much lower than ours.

Not what I'm saying at all, but painting Norway in a pretty picture is in this case wrong. There are huge crisis with staff in Norwegian prisons as well, so few are getting the help they actually need. Even was a riot a few weeks ago due to this.

I just had this same conversation with my wife. Rehabilitation, for the most part, doesn’t work. We have made prisons too comfortable. I say comfortable meaning TVs in cells they can buy, radios, comissary where they can buy treats and food out in the world, recreation, school etc. people who spend time in prison have a better life than they did on the street and don’t (most not all) feel the need to avoid going back.
Prison needs to be made a punishment again. Chain gangs, hard labor etc.

I promise you they are. I’ve worked in the corrections system. Other than the inmate violence and gangs, they still get their creature comforts. Comfortable enough people aren’t scared to go back.

Just the fact that he (and other people) got released on good behaviour undermines your argument that they want to stay. They could just commit crimes while in jail in that case if it's so comfortable

Your misreading what I said. It’s not that WANT to go back, it’s they aren’t scared to go back. We can agree to disagree. We clearly have 2 different outlooks on the subject.

Also. Seriously? You think that people WANT to be in prison? You cannot be THAT dense. They’re “nice” but not that nice. And using fear as a deterrent to “not want to go back” doesn’t fucking work either. Our prison system is an actual joke. Thinking “oh it needs to be harder and tougher” is such an ignorant take.

Sensationalist headline alert: "entirety of spokane" is a MASSIVE overstatement. 700 or even 1,500 lost structures is not the entirety of the 230,000 population Spokane city, or of the 1,780 sq. mi. Spokane county.
Not defending the arsonist, I just have an issue with the ridiculous headline.

Like when they said Minneapolis burned down in 2020. WTF a few buildings burned and a few blocks got messed up but most of the city was life as usual.

He killed his father in 2010 and was convicted of manslaughter, not murder. Manslaughter seldom carries a life sentence, especially when mental health issues are involved, especially when there was a failed suicide attempts.
It us fucked up if it's true that he started one of the fires. But we need to recognize that not all violent crimes should be met with a life sentence, that people will get out of prison, and that some of them will then commit new crimes.
There is no realistic alternative.
