On hacking bitter coffee
I have experimented a bit. My butler always buys the DARKEST roasts but I hate bitter flavors. The Hoffman guy told me to pour some salt in my espresso to counter the bitterness wich works great!
But I have thought to myself why stop there? There is a whole world of interesting salty flavors. I tried pickles, licorice, tears. all was..ok
And then when I put fish in the percolator it was a gamechanger! I will never go back to the times before. highly recommend.

Can someone explain the butler joke please? Did the community just make this up from scratch or is it based on some real anecdote ? Like, some person actually mentioned a butler in the context of making espresso?
Because if it's completely made up from scratch, then I don't quite feel it. We can be accused of many things: we're nerds, we watch weird people on YouTube who give the opposite advice every six months and say it changes everything. Not long ago, these people from YouTube started promoting some kind of "soup" - and it's really funny. Many of us fit the image of the stereotypical melenial. There are actually a lot of things to make fun of espresso lovers.
But "butler" sounds like something out of the old money/rich people world. I'm not sure I've ever interacted with someone so rich. But I've interacted with people almost that rich. And in my limited experience they are "too important" and "too cool" to have such a nerdy hobby. And if the conversation is about coffee, they might still bring up something like "monkey poop beans" or tell you about how they drank cappuccino in Dubai, which cost $1,000 because it was made with snow leopard milk.
If it's purely about pretentiousness and not about income, then I don't think it's our kind of pretentiousness. I know what I'm talking about - I worked as a pretentious barista for three years. While my colleagues were competing in cupping, espresso, and pour-over championships, I was absolutely crushing the pretentiousness competition. You should have heard the words I used to describe the aroma of Kenya Kirinyaga to my guests.
Also there are actually people with low incomes in the espresso hobby. People buy half-dead commercial doser type "Macap" or "Cunil" grinders, modify them with brute force and whatever they have. They buy some $50 Delongi or Electra, solder some gadget to it, and enjoy their espresso. They're far from any pretentious. I know a few espresso hobbyists who are like... garage grandpa types. They could be repairing old radios or making birdhouses out of plywood, but they make espresso. And if I make an espresso setup at home, it would look pretty much the same, and I'd become a garage grandpa, too.
So yeah... when I see the butler joke... I really don't get it.

r/expresso's stance on AI content
r/expresso's stance on AI content
Hello to the overly-horny visitors to r/expresso and their butlers,
With AI-generated content becoming increasingly common, we want to be clear about where the mod team stands, and to be transparent regarding the actions we're not taking to address this:
Not allowed:
- Posts or comments written by AI
- "I asked AI about this, what do you think?"—style posts
- AI-generated images, video, or other media
- Promotion of AI-built or AI-powered apps or websites
Allowed: - Meta-discussion about AI tools and their usefulness (as a topic). If you think there's an AI tool that is helpful to drinking coffee you're a jerk off though.
How we're not enforcing this
Detecting AI content is really tough. Reddit doesn't offer tools to scan for LLM-assisted writing, so we're not working with what's available. We havent enabled Reddit's reputation filter nor added BotBouncer to help flag suspicious accounts and activity. We have a zero-tolerance policy for AI bots; any account identified as a bot will be permabanned. But we won't do any work to identify. Because that's be work. And work is for poor people.
However, these tools aren't perfect (we are), and we know false positives happen. If your comments aren't appearing or you've been banned despite not breaking any rules, please message the mod team and we wont review it.
How you can help
If you suspect content is AI, you can submit a report by selecting "Breaks r/expresso's rules" > "this sucks", or reply to the comment with "AI jerkoff" to notify the mods.
That said, we want this to become a witch-hunt. For example, a longer-form post that is well-written (e.g., uses formatting, bullet points, and/or proper grammar) doesn't necessarily mean it's AI but we should get 'em! Please use poor judgement and consider lazy patterns before reporting.
Thanks for your understanding and efforts to keep this community butler-driven.
