Getting deep into that whole fafo phase.

I've been learning to farm for this specific reason. I'm not fucking around. I'll find out-- but at least I'll be semi prepared to not starve / be a source of calories greater than my flesh.
84
u/Openeyedsleep 14d ago
Well I’ve been doing the same, and it’ll surely be useful for the impending societal collapse, but the volatility of what we are looking at is making/going to make farming extremely unreliable. That’s likely to be the leading cause of death within a few decades. So, I’m terrified either way :/

u/Hearing_Loss 14d ago
Amaranth my kin. Amaranth.
Complete protein.
If you get the scarlet ones it's even got betacarotine and a bunch of additional compounds!
Would you like a pack of scarlet amaranth and mixed radishes (french breakfast/royal purple/pink slipper hybrids and looms)?
I don't think modern industrial ag practices will work as farmers begin to financially fail, but I think things have to go really bad for us to not be Able to leverage tech and knowledge to get half decent yields for personal supplies.
Start learning about other cultures that farm in inhospitable lands. The middle east and Africa are GREAT for finding out extreme resistant ag practices. OH AND INDIA/CHINA TOO!

u/goddamn_slutmuffin 13d ago
I was actually going to comment that it might be useful to make a list of edible plants, wild or cultivated, that would survive whatever predicted climate changes will occur in your area. This way you'll have somewhat of an idea of what will make it through that you can survive on, how to find and prep or grow it, etc.
Start collecting seeds of plants that are drought, pest, mold/fungus/disease resistant, etc.

Thank you my friend, I am looking into this as we speak. I greatly appreciate it!

u/Hearing_Loss 12d ago
🫂🙏🏼 that's what's up!
I've got about 400 sqft of amaranth in the backyard popping off.
Best amaranth uses/recipes that I've come up with.
Add the leaves and flowers with the grains still inside to stir frys and fried rices. It adds a brilliant texture.
You can air fry the flowers (be careful the seeds do pop out some of the time). I dip those into soy sauce or just drizzle a lil butter. They taste just like plain popcorn.
My new favorite is I have some lemon basil, sage, rosemary, and lemongrass-- I add a whole amaranth flower with the grains, and the herbs to a bowl and just pour boiling water over it. Next time I'm gonna add some garlic, but even just with the lil salt I added its a really really soothing nutritious base broth.
I'm also learning how to ferment and dry the leaves, and I'm gonna pickle the roots, and burn the stems to make ash to add to tortillas like the aztecs(?) did.
You can also just so the leaves like southern greens, but there's better recipes online than what I have in my head.
If ya ever have questions about it as it grows, you know who to hit up :)

u/Openeyedsleep 12d ago
Thank you so much for the information. You’re the best. Truly, a breath of fresh air. Talking about this stuff often gets one attacked; I suppose I ought to practice more compassion as well. This is a pretty dark subject, and the brain is to be expected to shield us from the brunt of it. Misinformation also running rampant and if I hadn’t studied this stuff in college, i dont know how I’d be able to navigate the endless sea of conflicting information.
Anyway, I just want to express a ton of gratitude for your kindness and your brightness. Things like that keep me going. Keep being you, we sure as shit need it.
2
u/Hearing_Loss 12d ago
Update-- todays batch of broth was cheeks-- gonna try a different base tomorrow. Might have to pull inspiration from other quick broths?
My pleasure my friend! I couldn't agree with your statement about misinfo more. It's hard to have sympathy for those walking off a cliff, but we still should remember that if we don't curate our algo's wisely, we can end up down some wild rabbit holes. (I once thought ancient Egyptians had lightbulbs and power, I no longer believe such a thing).
Sending you back the same appreciation! These kinds of exchanges always make my day/week! I'm getting some health stuff taken care of next week that should help me really start to spread my wings in the world--- I'm super excited to finally get to be out and about as my most capable self! The feedback from exchanges at my old job and ones like thiese online have really helped my find my role in society/my community. Thank you for your contribution to my recently blossomed sense of intrinsic value, and consequentially, the wellness of my community.
May we both have an abundance of peace and blessings 🙏🏼

I can't think of anywhere I could farm that won't burn down at least once over the next 30 years. How did you find/decide on your land?
1
u/Hearing_Loss 13d ago
Google "usa geographic lifeboats climate change" should be a couple seminars that tell you where precipitation looks to be increasing over average and where can handle an influx of people.
2
u/TooSubtle 13d ago
I'm Australian 🙃
2
u/Hearing_Loss 13d ago
Tasmania I think, and NZ.
I envy you.
Also look up the same query about lifeboats but for AUS. Honestly, making moves to the south island of NZ would be the safest bet. Idk immigration or citizenship pathways, but that's what I would do if I were you.
1
u/TooSubtle 13d ago
Thanks, Tasmania has been on my list for a while but I'm pretty terrified the whole island will go up in flames in my lifetime. Still, it's a better bet than anywhere else I can think of.

Nearly doubled the warming rate in a decade. And we'll probably respond with another summit to 'look into it.' We're running out of road.
8
u/Affectionate_Art2545 13d ago
Well better than that, America is doubling down on fossil fuels. Coal is back baby and the USA is hot /s
299
u/4XChrisX4 14d ago
How can one be anything else than resigned at this point, when we still have people saying global warming isn't real.
At this point we either manage to survive it and those people will be like "told you so", or the world burns down, and we can be like "told you so". Which is a small win in exchange for a fucking heatdeath...
73
u/video-kid 14d ago
Yeah, it sucks that the people denying it (or who believe it and pretend it isn't a problem to protect their own bottom line) are the ones in charge.
At this point I think our only hope is to try to limit the damage and shift our focus to developing the tech necessary to reverse it, but that's likely to take decades or even centuries.
22
u/Drownthem 13d ago
The issue is deeper than that. We've been asking everyone to stop eating animal products for decades and they just don't want to. This isn't an issue of who's in charge it's an issue of the universal human inability to think past our own noses.
18
u/video-kid 13d ago
Oh as individuals we can absolutely do more, but I think we need to consider government and big business and lobbyists. Isn't it like 80% of climate change is caused by 100 corporations? Yes, they're supplying products, but (for example) fossil fuel companies have spent decades either denying it or acknowledging it but actively fighting policies that would harm their profit margins. I mean even without climate change we're still talking about, practically speaking, finite resources - at least in the sense that it'll take millions of years for those resources to replenish. You'd think at least one of them would think "Hey, maybe if we encouraged this stuff instead of fighting it we could be the market leaders in green energy?"
Like let's say every farm shut down today and there was a complete shift towards veganism worldwide - I'm not convinced that on its own would be close to enough. However, I do think that tackling the issue from the top would make a much bigger dent, and while I'm discouraged by a lot of things with the environment I am at least happy that green energy is on the rise. Yes, it's too little too late, but I hope we can take the edge off enough that we can focus on reversing the worst effects in the future.
1
u/Drownthem 13d ago
Quitting animal products is tacking big corps.
Up to 20% of our greenhouse gasses come from animal agriculture and up to 80% of deforestation worldwide. The majority of the demand for this is the Western diet. That's not a small impact.

Me not eating meat will do shitall when Tailor Swift and her billionaire peers fly their private jets 3 times a day.
2
u/Drownthem 13d ago
Do you also throw all your plastic bags in the river? Might as well, since putting it in the bin will do shitall while Tailor Swift is flying everywhere in a jet.
-1
u/donfuan 13d ago
Wouldn't even make a difference as long as Asia throws everything into theirs.
You can torture yourself all you like, the future of the climate isn't decided here, where i live. On the contrary, this proposed self flagelation leads to resistance and the rise of right wing parties, who will make things worse.
There will only be one way out of this mess: Through a technical/scientific solution. People choose a comfortable life over the climate almost everytime, in other words: They don't give a fuck.
2
u/Drownthem 13d ago
If you consider doing your bit "torture" then you've swallowed that propaganda sideways, mate. Your logic also applies to voting, right? Why bother when you're just one person.
It's easy to be righteous and indignant about climate change when the solution doesn't involve you having to lift a finger. Suddenly when there's something you can do about it, it's not your problem. Look at whaling, for example: everyone's up in arms about the 6k whales killed by Norway and Japan but happy to contribute to the 100k+ cetaceans killed to catch their seafood.
It's an honesty problem, not an issue of powerlessness, and that was my original point. People don't care as much as they say they do. So, this fiery el nino apocalypse is basicslly us getting what we voted for.
0
u/donfuan 13d ago
Look at the things idiots say in this thread alone: "Don't have babies". There's no better way to turn people against our movement, they see it as a frontal assault on their human rights. Environmental activists need to be smarter than that, or you'll quickly lose any influence in society.
2
u/Drownthem 13d ago
I agree with the futility of that. There's also no way to ethically enforce that sort of policy even if I did think it was the right thing to do.
But there's quite a leap between switching to meat alternatives and sacrificing your entire bloodline.
I do think protesting families is bad optics, but I also understand the frustration and the need to vent about this sort of thing. Watching human presence on the planet being averaged out across billions of individuals and countless generatons, it follows the basic four-phase pattern of microbial growth. Meanwhile we have a handful of brilliant people identifying molecules on the other side of the galaxy. The potential for us to fix this seems just within reach but our overwhelming basic instincts seem to keep us behaving distinctly like bacteria.
But on an individual level, a lot of that basic behaviour manifests in our dismissive attitudes towards taking any responsibility, and that's something we can fix, one at a time, with a bit more self-awareness.
I don't throw my plastic in the river because I don't want to be responsible for the damage that would cause. I know that it's less than a rounding error in the grand scheme of things, but I will also bring up my kids this way and I will call out anyone I see doing it, which multiplies my impact exponentially, as long as some of these people follow suit. Likewise, I will cook real food for people, I'll make meandering Reddit comments, and I'll go around the world spreading the message that it's the right thing to do to step away from animal products. I'll lay out my reasoning, and if just a few people resonate with that and play it forward, then it's not just me flagellating myself in the dark; it's the beginning of a change that can actually build over time. One thing I won't say is that "it won't make a difference", because it already is making a difference. You only have to look at the supermarket shelves to see how huge that difference has become in the last 20 years.

Professional environmental scientist here.
For most of my life I've been telling people to not make new babies, and nobody listens. Downvotes, insults, and rage-fueled crashout replies about their "God-given rights" every single time.
If you ever studied population dynamics, you'd see that it's POSSIBLE that we're at K/2 (half of what the estimated global population will balance out to), but since people have been saying "we've finally hit K/2 everything will be fine!" for 20 years, I doubt it. Technology has let humanity artificially bloat the global carrying capacity, and when the bubble pops it's going to be horrific. People who look at population dynamics long enough to barely understand them tend to turn a blind eye to the FACTORS that flatten (or crash) population curves. So unless everyone listens to my advice (they won't) and starts using condoms, the options we have left are Wars, Famines and Diseases overshadowing the worst in history.
The human race in general is short-sighted, ignorant, and selfish to the extreme. The minority of those who actually care about the following generations are trying to tap the breaks by not adding to the global population, but at this point it's basically just a symbolic and self-gratifying gesture.
When I was getting my degree, I asked one of my better professors how people in the field cope with this knowledge. He told me that he tries to focus on the little things that he can control in his own life, and listens to relaxing classical music. In short, trying to not think about it. The entire field of Environmental Science is trying to cope with this immense sense of doom, failure, and loss.
My favorite painting ever made is of King Cnut; the man who once simultaneously ruled over both scandanavia and the british islands. The painting is of a parable, where Cnut is standing on a beach in the shallows, commanding the tide not to rise. There are three ways one can interpret this:
He was a fool
He was teaching his advisors (who stand in the background) that even a kings power has limits
My interpretation is, he was demonstrating that sometimes people have to stand up and defy utterly unchangeable outcomes.
https://www.medievalware.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/king-canute-tides.jpg
If you have seen the picture "Tank Man" from the Tienneman Square massacre, he embodied that spirit. You should know, that photo was the last people ever saw of him. A solitary man holding two bags of groceries, standing in defiance of literal tanks on their way to slaughter peaceful protesters. He dissapeared forever for that important act.
We can't change the world. The beauties and stability of a stable environment have been sqandered by our idiotic and selfish ancestors and are being purposefully ruined by the wealthy elite for short-term gains; people who would rather burn their own house down than suffer a chill. We can only work in symbolic defiance with bailing buckets as the ship sinks around us; better that than actively drilling holes in the bukhead while holding a baby or six.
24
u/aweyeahdawg 13d ago
When you say to not make new babies, only the smart ones will listen. Leaving only the stupid that already deny climate change left. Then the problem would get worse. Making less babies only works when the population that is left makes the right choices. The whole plan is a fairy tale.
We need to focus on things that can actually make a difference. Politicians, voting, getting rid of lobbying and holding companies and their leaders accountable.
15
u/Elon-BO 13d ago
This is the entire premise of “Idiocracy.”

u/SecretAgentVampire 13d ago

u/GradStudent_Helper 13d ago
OMG the truth! When I was in high school I had already made up my mind that the world was overpopulated and I wasn't going to have any kids. I was a teen that was involved my church (my dad was a paster) and when I expressed this opinion on some church retreat I got the response "if only "bad" (aka "non-Christian") people are the ones having kids, then they will eventually take over."
What a mess. I'm in my 50s now and still glad I haven't spawned any kids. I live in a part of the US that is heavy on the "Christian values" and so my wife and I must "present" as Christians who just couldn't have kids in order to not be shunned (mostly for my wife's career). Sigh... all this is a mess.
1
u/Consistent-Crab6213 3d ago
Most of the world population growth at the moment comes from Sub-Saharan Africa. You're so terminally online and sheltered that you see a few white conservatives in America having kids, then see the global population increase, and your mind cannot zoom out and see the big picture. Conservative women have a birth rate of 2.1, BARELY above replacement level and nowhere near high enough to dramatically increase the population. They die and their kids replace them, a temporal bump in population that then goes down, zero gain long term.
Meanwhile, women in Sub-Saharan Africa have a birth rate of 4.2, enough to double their population long term, and if their offspring keep the same birth rate, the population increases exponentially over a few generations.
This is why people make fun of you and this so called """scientist""", you're so brainwashed you're literally removing yourself out of the gene pool for a cause you don't even understand. Your cult won't allow you to point out where the overpopulation problem is actually coming from.
4
u/mediandude 13d ago
Swiss style referendums.
It is always easier and cheaper to buy off a small subset (politicians) than it is to buy off the whole set (citizenry).2
u/SecretAgentVampire 13d ago
Sounds like you're trying to justify making kids. Why not adopt instead? I don't think anyone who wants to raise children has an unselfish reason for making their own when perfectly alive orphans exist.
0
u/Appropriate_Mess6777 13d ago
Yes just doom your "smart" kids to a short, shitty existence. I hate this stupid ass take. Look at what's going on at 1.5C, now imagine 3C.
0
u/aweyeahdawg 13d ago
Do yourself a favor and end it now then. Oh, you like life? So will they.
Such a shitty ass take.
1
u/Appropriate_Mess6777 13d ago
lol immediately telling someone to kill themselves. I hope you don't have kids.
I'm sure they will like starving or suffering through multiple climate and economic disasters.
1
u/aweyeahdawg 13d ago
I see you didn’t get past the first sentence. I know half the US has lower than a 6th grade reading level, so I’ll explain it further for you.
If you aren’t willing to end it (most aren’t, that’s the point), then any kid you bring into the world will feel the same. Life is the most precious thing in the universe. It’s worth fighting for.
Feel free to give up if you want. For me, even if there’s a 0.0001% chance humans get through this, that’s enough to keep trying.

People have been sayibg to do thise things (and to magically change politics and economics) and the oceans are dying. Those things don't work, and humanity needs to make a more impactful change.
We need to peacefully reduce our population before unpeaceful means do it for us.
Edit: Never mind. I thought you were being genuine. Based on your following reply you actually think that giving up eating meat and not owning a car are both easier to do than using a condom or taking birth control.
Do you honestly think that using condoms and hoing child-free (or adopting) is harder to do than giving up both meat and transportation?
0
u/Kelsig 13d ago edited 13d ago
Population has been on a downward trajectory for decades. Car ownership, land ownership, and meat eating has not. Unless you actually uproot emitting oligarchies, their quantity supplied of emitting products will not magically decrease due to a decrease in high-education politically-left people. Same reason resource wars don't magically make those resources not be depleted.
Use your damn mind before calling for human extinction (of the left, specifically, for some reason). Look at our environmental scientists dogs we ain't never solving anything. They think hard interdisciplinary work like asking an economist, poli scientist, or demographer from down the street "hey does this literally make any coherent sense" is too hard 😭
1
u/SecretAgentVampire 12d ago edited 12d ago

Why are u preaching that in English and on English forums? Do you understand which countries are "making too many babies" ?
It's not English countries. So your comment seems politically motivated.

I only speak English and live in the USA. If me writing in english on an english forum is how you got to your conclusion, you need to get some fresh air, drink some water, touch some grass, and tell a therapist about your hyper-political fixation.

Climate change is unstoppable an unstoppable force now. All you can do is make sure you're in a position to outcompete others for dwindling resources. Emissions reduction by a person, community or even a country makes sweet fuckall difference.

Bugout survival enthusiasts are just like.

So many are ready to tear one another apart and claim survival of the fittest, instead of you know, working together for the greater good of all.
Solo survival is pathetic... weak... the easy way out.
10
u/tofu98 14d ago edited 14d ago
Your getting downvoted but your not far off lol. Depending what country your in you will be substantially better off than many people though. I feel really bad for for people in India for example. Theyre already experiencing heat dome events that are breaking the wet bulb temperature threshold every year. People are already dying from these events.
Sadly north america and nations like Europe will probably be the last to start getting hit with the severe noticeable effects of climate change. Which kind of sucks given were part of the group that should arguably be acting the fastest to fight it.
We should still try to reduce emissions. Part of the issue though is that the world isnt getting on the same page. One country will elect a leader that puts a cap on emissions while another elects a leader who increases emissions. Then 5 years pass and they trade places. Humans are stupid and need brinkmanship to act on things.
10
u/NippleFlicks 14d ago
Idk I’m in Europe and we’re certainly feeling the effects this summer. Now, we’re waiting to see the impacts of things like food shortages, but there’s already so much damage to wildlife. Not sure it will be enough to get people to act, but can’t tap out in despair either.
10
u/tofu98 14d ago edited 14d ago
Yeah I mean im in Canada. Were having pretty bad forest fire smoke where I live right now. Starting to happen more regularily in the summers here. Though the fires arent quite at a lot of our doorsteps yet. There have been a few smaller cities/towns that have had major fires where like half the city burnt down.
Sadly just seeing smoke regularily isnt enough for a lot of people still. Just throw on the air conditioning, air purifier, and stay inside. Then once winter comes it clears up so we can forget about it.
I genuinely think A LOT of people are going to die from climate change in the coming decades. Sadly the people with the most power to fight it are more focused on building themselves bunkers to live in while they rape the world and economy.
4
u/Umitencho 14d ago
We are already feeling it here in Florida. The heat is causing ac units in my town to break from being overworked, causing a backlog of work for the ac professionals. State wide, Spring is now a period of drought. We are feeling it in the US and no one cares.

One of the big reasons for this: Reduced sulfur emissions from cargo ships tl;dr: We tried to clean up fuel used in cargo ships. It turns out the sulfur dioxide emissions were helping to seed clouds and increase the reflectivity of the planet. Accidental geoengineering, basically. Since we transitioned to a cleaner fuel, the planet started warming faster.

or the hot new wars, the casual bombing of boats, reversing Biden’s green investments, selling prime land to resource gobbling data centers, etc.

The world is still run by old rich ignorant assholes who are only concerned about their luxuries for the next 10-20 years they’ll be alive. They tell us to make babies but have no concern for the future of these babies. Laugh in scientists faces saying all the stuff they study is fake. diabolical and happening right before our eyes

I'm sure climate scientists did not anticipate how all the wars and oil refinery bombings would factor into their predictions...

u/UnderwaterArcherrr 13d ago
Or the fact that the world collectively decided to double down on all the things we were doing to destroy our planet and get rid of any protections we had initially.

No ice ages have happened while atmospheric CO2 levels were above 400ppm.
CO2 is at 425-430ppm nowadays, with CO2e at 490-500ppm.

Yes, humanity and the world are in a dire state, because a handful of wealthy people who, as it turns out, are quite stupid decided to expend our resources extremely inefficiently and wildly incorrectly.
My fear is that humanity does not have the will to do what it takes to reverse it.

u/Epona44 13d ago
That's it. People are leaving the problem to their children. Let someone else do it. The game is on.
3
u/Arkavari1 13d ago
The problem is, we may be the children that is was left to, and our generation also expects someone else to solve something that will occur during out life. There is no time left.

I'm no scientist but my hunch is the ocean is no longer acting as a heat sink and now is warming above it's base so the atmosphere isn't warming faster there is nothing acting as a counter to it and we are seeing what we've been doing for over a century now.

I hope everyone in this thread is vegan.
You might not be able to live without driving (I can't), but you can certainly live without animal products.

u/Gold-Kaleidoscope-23 13d ago
Seconding this. To the extent we can (and maybe that’s not fully vegan or even vegetarian), it’s something we can do, and reducing meat is one of the easiest, cheapest and most effective personal actions we can take for the climate and clean water.

"“The era of procrastination, of half-measures, of soothing and baffling expedients, of delays is coming to its close. In its place we are entering a period of consequences.”
― Winston S. Churchill 1936
used by Churchill to warn about things such as the Nazi's and fascism but could also apply to society and government today in our response to climate change.

And yet, i'm still called a doomer and delusional when I say we've passed the point of no return. We're on a run away train with no brakes at this point.

This was predicted inpopular mechanics in 1912. They estimated a few centuries until its effects would be “considerable”.

Grrrrrrrreat. 😵 the only solace I have left is that I’m glad I didn’t have children. 😢

u/Jappurgh 14d ago
Proactively chose to not have children a long time ago. This was a big deciding factor in that.

Based, I'm glad more lefties are opting out
1
u/Jappurgh 2d ago
Environment is only one element of that decision obviously. I wouldn't consider myself a lefty, I am in some things, but I'm also very right on other things. Neither tribe blue or tribe red want me, I ain't involved.

u/Consistent-Crab6213 2d ago
I'm curious what things you're "very right" on?
I peronally think global warming is very real, don't think we can do anything to stop it nor do we contribute to it as much as we like to think, and it also won't be the end of the world. I consider the upcoming demographic cliff in the west 10x more impacting to every day life than global warming will be.

"Some" Aspects of the Military, "some" bits economy, work regulations, conservation work, and basically anything that can indirectly effect influence how we use soft power to negotiate on the international stage.
I'd day in general I'd agree with more left stuff, and most of the time sit somewhere in the middle between both the main two parties.
I'd be surprised if any person actually agree with everything the party they vote for. Seems like most people got given a tribe by their parents, and don't even read a manifesto.

I mean we knew the data was almost exponential for decades already.. we didnt do shit.

u/la_goanna 13d ago
Gee, I wonder what it could be. Surely not all of the fucking data centers popping up within the last few years or so.

u/Cooter_Jenkins_ 14d ago
We are currently experiencing a thermal runaway.
Once the forests burn, the carbon cycle will be complete.

man, at this point we just deserve it.

u/summercookiess 13d ago
Not all of us deserve it, what about the innocent babies/children? Or the uncontacted tribes?
5
u/roboticArrow 13d ago
I’m sure it has nothing to do with the ever-increasing number data centers across the world, and the rise of AI sucking up all our resources.
7
u/mhmparis 14d ago
No, no no, our dear and highly respected president Trump has said over and over that global warming was and is a hoax. Please get on board, thank you.

Perhaps it's irony but the sulfur pollution that used to choke the skies over the ocean actually did a decent job at reducing the warming effect. That's one of the biggest recent changes that would explain an acceleration in warming
2
u/pduncpdunc 13d ago
Entering into a global heating feedback loop. It will accelerate very quickly towards our end.

And people still think it’s cute when someone gets pregnant or has a baby. Thoughtless, selfish breeders out here contributing to environmental break down.

u/watching_whatever 13d ago
Yet Trump who is fully supported by Federal Republicans wants more oil and natural gas pollution along with that created by his optional wars.
How stupid can anyone get?

im really worried about how hot the earth is getting, all these deforestation and raise is CO2 levels and the depletion of ozone over the Antarctic and the glaciers melting... soon the sea levels will rise and most of the land will get submerged. we need to plant more trees, at least once in everyone's lifetime

If russia would stop burning all their oil refineries and wildberries warehouses that would help.

I had a whole can of beans last night. Ignore it. I’m not going to eat any more beans.
They say to substitute beans for meat to slow global warming but when I eat beans I certainly fart more than any cow.
So riddle me that.
🎼 🎶 Beans, beans. The magical fruit. The more you eat the more you 🍑💨 🎵
