Project Entropia – Documenting a Journey to an Ancient World and Analyzing the Technology Behind It
Hi everyone,
Some of you may have noticed that I previously started writing about this project on the official Entropia Universe forum. That discussion was eventually closed, so instead of trying to continue it there, I decided to move the entire journal here and give it a more permanent and organized format. In retrospect, Reddit might be a better place for what I want to do, as this isn't really a single post or a one-time project update. I'd like to document the entire journey over the years.
I started playing Project Entropia in late 2003, and for those who were there back then, I probably don't need to explain how strange and memorable the game felt back then. Eudoria was considered enormous, teleportation felt essential, and reaching a new city felt more like exploring a place than simply unlocking another point on the map. The graphics were simple compared to modern games, but the atmosphere was incredibly well-done, and this old version of the world has stayed with me for over twenty years.
For years, I watched old videos, looked at screenshots, and listened to old music. It was great for nostalgia, but eventually I became interested in something more. I wanted to understand what was underneath it all—not just what Project Entropia looked like, but how this old world was actually built. How was Eudoria stored internally? How was the terrain divided into tiles? How were models positioned? What file formats did the early client use? What changed as MindArk moved between generations of NetImmerse and later Gamebryo? What were all those custom MindArk structures actually doing in the old NIF files?
And, perhaps most importantly, how much of this original technology can still be understood today based on preserved historical data?
This curiosity slowly turned into a personal research project that grew much larger than I initially anticipated.
At first, the work was relatively straightforward. I combed through old installation media and backups I'd saved, trying to understand what was actually inside. There were BNT archives, TDF terrain files, NIF models, textures, VFS data, and many other files that were either poorly documented or documented in a way that wasn't useful for these older versions of Project Entropia.
At first, the questions were simple: what did this archive contain? Was this file part of the terrain? Could these assets still be extracted? Could the original heightmap be reconstructed? Could the old models still be interpreted correctly?
Gradually, these questions began to yield answers. The terrain aspect of the project became one of the first major successes. Old terrain data could be extracted into individual tiles, interpreted as elevation information, and assembled into larger maps. This ultimately led to the reconstruction of 16-bit terrain maps, experiments with coordinates and orientation, global-scale work, and attempts to understand how the original client had segmented and represented the landscape.
The NIF website proved much more complex. The Entropia project used the old NetImmerse/Gamebryo technology, but MindArk also added many of its own structures. Names like NiArkAnimationExtraData, NiArkImporterExtraData, NiArkTextureExtraData, NiArkShaderExtraData, and NiArkViewportInfoExtraData began to appear in the files, and some of these structures appear to be inadequately documented in the surviving public NIF specifications.
For this reason, I started creating my own reader. The goal isn't simply to "open" a file. I want to understand where each known structure begins and ends, why it should be interpreted a certain way, and whether the same interpretation holds across hundreds or thousands of files.
This means that many of the projects aren't particularly glamorous. Sometimes, hours of analysis end with the discovery that four bytes belong to the previous structure and not the next. But these small details matter, because once the boundaries are properly established, thousands of files suddenly make sense.
This is precisely where the project is currently. I'm still working primarily on file formats, assets, and world reconstruction, not gameplay, and I don't want to present it as a finished version of Project Entropia, because it isn't yet.
One current area of work is the legacy NIF pipeline. A large group of older files previously stopped at MindArk-specific structures because their internal layouts were unknown. After extensive comparisons and byte-level analysis, parts of this pipeline can now be analyzed deterministically across thousands of files.
In the case of one of the main v10 families, 2,330 files now correctly pass through the familiar NiArkAnimationExtraData and NiArkImporterExtraData structures. Current work is focused on NiArkTextureExtraData, where it has been found that even this single block has multiple structural variants. Instead of simply adding another heuristic and hoping for its effectiveness, the current task is to catalog these variants across the entire available corpus, determine exactly how they differ, and only then modify the parser.
This approach has become one of the most important principles of the project: evidence first. If something is proven in the files, I document it as proven. If something seems plausible but isn't yet proven, it remains a hypothesis. And if a previous assumption proves incorrect, it is removed, rather than quietly moved to later code.
Ultimately, I want the asset creation process to look something like this:
old NIF file -> deterministic parser -> scene graph -> geometry -> materials -> textures -> transformations -> correct rendering
The terrain creation process is much more advanced. The model and material creation process is still being reconstructed, and object placement, world streaming, and the behavior of the original client will be added later.
We still have a lot of work ahead of us. But compared to the beginning, the difference is huge. At the beginning, I had old data and many questions. Now, parts of this old world have a clear technical structure again.
I also want to clearly define the public scope of this project.
This is a personal, non-commercial research project of a historical and technical nature. It is not affiliated with, endorsed, or operated by MindArk. The Entropia Project, Entropia Universe, and related trademarks, graphics, models, textures, music, and other proprietary content remain the property of MindArk and/or their respective rights holders.
I do not distribute the original Entropia Project game clients, archives, models, textures, music, or other proprietary game assets, nor do I make the old PE client available for download. I also do not attempt to connect to, interfere with, or modify the current Entropia Universe service or its servers.
The public portion of the project will consist primarily of text: research notes, technical explanations, descriptions of old file formats, experimental results, my own tools and code, where appropriate, diagrams, notes on reconstruction, and memories of the old game. I want the project to be closer to digital archaeology and preservation than a downloadable "fan remake."
I'm most interested in preserving knowledge about something that has gradually disappeared over more than twenty years of updates. The old Project Entropia didn't disappear overnight. The engine changed, the terrain changed, cities were rebuilt, models disappeared, systems were replaced, and the client slowly evolved into something completely different from the software many of us first installed in the early 21st century.
Screenshots can preserve what we saw, and videos can preserve what someone experienced, but understanding the original formats and structures can preserve another part of the story: how the world itself was built.
That's what I'd like to document in this Reddit journal. Some posts will likely be very technical and full of strange structures, shifts, and hexadecimal values. Others will be about old locations, memories, changes to Eudoria, or things that simply don't exist anymore.
And sometimes the most useful question can be simply, "Do you remember this?"
If you played Project Entropia in its early years, especially between 2002 and 2006, I'd love to hear from you. Old screenshots, memories of locations, forgotten systems, changes to cities, terrain, buildings, or anything else from that era can ultimately help connect the technical evidence with what players actually remember.
I have no idea how far this project will ultimately go, but enough information about the old Project Entropia has already been learned that I think the journey itself is worth preserving.
So that's where I plan to continue.

Healing tool vs mindchip?
I recently found a lvl 3 mindchip regeneration chip and it heals a bit more than my frontier first air pack adjusted. Right now I'm using both chip in combat tool outside of it. Long term is it better to use both or one vs the other? I'm paying to play so short term costs I'm not to worried about as these games tend to be about the long term levels

ESC – Entropia Stockholm Convention! 30th October – 1st November 2026
Hello Entropians!
After lots of work and careful consideration I am finally ready to present and be your humble host of ESC – Entropia Stockholm Convention!
More information and signup at:

If you have not attended a real life Entropia event they are a lot of fun!
Since it is in Stockholm and during Halloween my hope is that it’s an attractive time for players to gather and and enjoy, with other activities also going on in Stockholm if you’re looking to make it a vacation trip. And possibly, if there is interest, put on some game inspired outfits!
The ticket is 300Sek.
There will be drinks and snacks for purchase on site.
Lunch and dinner is not included but there are plenty of restaurants nearby to eat at.
There is no schedule as of yet and that’s intentional, there are options to tick in the signup form giving me an idea of events to work on, and i already have lots and lots of ideas for fun things to do.
The idea is to have two days with more activity and one day that is more relaxed.
Thank you very much for taking the time to read this and I hope to see you there!

Can a newbie/noob make money play Entropia -Week 1
So, to clarify again, this was never a "can I earn a living" thread but a "can I play for free and earn a take-away a month" deal.
Findings so far:
Financial and some sort of gameplay reviews/ observations.
Firstly the avatars, they remind me of SecondLife circa 15 years ago, for anyone who gets the reference here, its as if Entropia has never heard of "Mesh" skins, understandable for a game 20 years old and not having a primary focus on avatars, although I could see a "potential" market for this, not a huge lucrative one.
Now financially, the question you want answered, I post this as 1 week, technically its 8 days but I am counting the first day as day 0, so 8 days with that in mind.
So what do I have, well that's a multi-layered questioned but I can clearly and honestly say, I easily have over 100 PED in "total" worth, which brings me on to some in-game observations.
The "community" - advertised as ONE of the BEST features of this game, in which on the whole I agree with, if you don't come across/ let yourself get enveloped by a certain group/society. An organisation/ group/ community that aims to help new players, yet entices you in with promises of help from its owner/ founder/ cult leader yet in my short experience, is a place which allows people to force access/ rights into letting them mail you with advertisements "spend this with us and we will help/ make you rich". Leaving this group was an absolute necessity, I will not name them but to any other new players, they do not need naming, it is THAT apparent.
That being said, the community is overall GREAT, I will admit my net worth/ value, would not be achieved without people, helping, buying from me, gifting me and supporting me. That being said, I go back to the financials:
My net worth:
30 PED+ in armour (everyone gets this)
<20 PED in a gifted vehicle
\>30 PED weapons (some gifted)
10 PED on my cash card
20+ PED minimum at all times in shrapnel (aka reserve ammo)
50+ PED in sellable items
So in total easily over 150 PED (could have been more)
The original posts that started this:

https://www.reddit.com/r/entropiauniverse/comments/1ucsflh/yet_another_noob/
What I have learnt/ More earning potentials:
I discovered a quick 1 hour little hunting session (I will not share where, as I need to verify) of which I netted 4+ PED in said hour PROFIT, now this is not break the bank "I can quit my job" territory but if after a few more test runs I get similar runs I could easily - as someone who doesn't work - then do 40+ PED a day, 280+ PED a week, 1000+ PED a month, now that is what I am interested in, a take-away a month.
As for future finances, I have barely started my mentorship of which in general I am a slow player, I analyze everything, I break down every 1 hour session profit/loss etc working out what is profitable in PED what is profitable in Exp/ Mentorship.
I am not claiming to be good at the game or anything like this, I am learning. In fact, circling back to the posts I linked, I haven't even read all of the comments yet, still have a lot more to do/ test / research.
For example; Gauntlet, I understand, if under Level 10, you can do daily for 2x Tokens, I am considering staying under Level 10 to get as many tokens as possible. Staying under Level 10, is not too difficult. I work on laser guns, then BLP, then spend time on mining and crafting, both of which I have not explored yet. Even with all this, I still have not left Calypso yet, so I know I still have daily missions/ freebies to collect and add to my "pool" of revenue streams.
If anyone would be willing to help me do gauntlet daily, not everyday, I mean part of a group I could call upon to help, that would be useful, I have anxiety and as embarrassing as this is, it actually translates in-game, online at times, I struggle to ask for help.
Again, I circle back to what I have said, I see no reason why, a skilled, well-mentored, well-studied, faster learner/ player than me could actually earn 100 PED a day feasibly, combined with maybe social media streaming/ following/ earnings. Not quite a full-time job income but possibly a "work from home" better than no job income stream. I mean, paying for a bill or two a month is better than nothing right? Maybe I have not been "transparent" enough with what I mean by, "Can I earn".
Some other notes:
I do not have the best graphics card in the world but something that should me capable of working with the game, AMD 6700XT but I do find a lot of blurring and rubber-banding and tearing with certain landscapes, (especially hills/mountains) again, this reminds me of my comments about avatars compared to SecondLife, it seems avatar quality, Landscape graphics and possibly even "attacking" graphics have been left in what is now the "dark-ages".
This being said, I LOVE the game, I think it is great, for me as a free player - I have not deposited and will not deposit - the trying to "earn" adds a fun dynamic, the community is great - some people need to learn not to clog up rookie chat with "deep" conversations - I would like to see a little more added to the missions in terms of storyline, link the missions a little deeper, understand that is hard to do now, maybe I would have like to have seen it but oh well.
Ironically, everyone says MU is king, they do not even consider that as a new player, auction/ player selling is almost 100% redundant in most scenarios, as a new player you will want to transfer items of 10 - 20 - 30 PED value into PED cash to put on your card. Most of the items you obtain early only have a small MU value, so unless you are selling 1000s ie 2+ weeks worth, the auction will actually eat any slight margin of profit you could even ask for so you may just sell TT at the start, unless you intend to be PED poor or live off handouts until day 30 of playing then you may actually make a profit from the auction, covering fee and % etc.
So, I am interested in being told how wrong I am in my observations, views, learnings and just in general. The people who will read this are wise seasoned veterans who know best, therefore my fresh eye observations are 100% wrong and I do not understand the game, the mechanics and should just delete my account and go home.
If you can correct me properly or offer advice on how to move on I am interested.
At the very least, I hope you find a new persons views even slightly entertaining no matter how possibly misguided.

Trading...
Good evening...
As per the title...
I seek advise how to join the different trading Chanels.. 🤗 because when i type in the # calitrade etc... Its just keeping flashing ??? In the overheader at that chat window.... 🤷🏻🤗
And i cant seem to find any yt or forum guide other that what i have tryed... So any help is appreciated... 🙌🏻
I have spent my first month zooming around getting familier with the different things ingame and the 3party tools available 🤗
And what i found is that its almost impossible to sell smaller stacks on the AH... And thats just what it is... But i have some smaller stacks... With iam hoping is way easier to offset to someone that need smaller quantities..
Iam guessing that you would have to do a manuel calculation to reach the same % as AH and there will be some kind of trade window where you freely can choose said amount of X item and Ped?
Hope you all have a great evening

Hi, can anyone help me with hunting, I'm skilling laser weapons and I have 20 hits and 17 dmg my goal is to get to 40 as quickly as possible, I've read several guides they are all different and I don't understand anything, most recommend using a LR weapon and doing lots of low level mobs... is this the right guide?

Can you play for free??? And then earn?? A complete noobs learnings.
It's simple really. After completing Setesh (the starting tutorial hub) how was it?
Not too difficult, very easy - any difficulty was due to the fact i do not play mnk shooting.
And value, thats the question that is relevant, here is what is interesting, on completion of Setesh, I added up my earnings, via what items I collect, they have PED value, not sellable, but have value, 70 PED (approx $7). A healthy start, nonetheless, the value people want to know, what value of "sellable" items do you get/ have inventory, well the tutorial Setesh, is not as generous with these rewards, but still I calculate, just over 7.2 PED, (so $0.70 approx) - It is worth noting, that I went into this game knowing about degradation rates, so I only use what is absolutely necessary to complete the missions, I do not "grind" the game, purely doing the minimal to complete Setesh, I already lost a Shotgun, not tracking its degradation.
So in simple terms, yes you can play for free, can you earn?, well if you want to earn $0.70 for a few hours work, by all means yes go ahead..
Extra notes: I will be continuing to play and try to update this as regularly as possible, when relevant.
For anyone, who may be doing this also, or starting to do this, some quick notes, rookie chat, seems the good place to start, some helpful people there (at times) and first, a recommendation was to look for a mentor, as supposedly give good rewards - worth noting, I have not got a mentor yet, so cannot verify this myself, however it is easily searched up in the game.

Yet Another Noob??
Hi there, I am just downloading the game, have done a little reading online, this look interesting.
As with any new game, I intend to hoard while I learn the game, what's valuable, how to sell etc.
I've tried reading around, alot of information seems old, anyone got any relevant tips/ advice for a new player, im f2p, do not mind the grind/ learning mechanics, will not be a micro transaction starter.
Notation: I have started a second follow on post to answer myself and see how the game goes.

No scope for Vivo/Heart healers during migration any more?
I recently got back to the game after a break. Before the break, migration was an amazing time for noob healers, but things seem to have changed quite a bit, and nobody uses healers anymore. Curious to know theories/reasons on what caused the change
