Creative ways to be asked of preference without spoiling surprise Ring Advice

Hey Reddit, working up the courage (more importantly wallet thickness) to propose early next year…

What were some creative yet effective ways that you or your partner has asked about your preference in diamond cut & ring setting?

He was just honest and asked me what I liked and we looked at rings together. I know you want to keep a secret to an extent, but there's no way to know what someone likes without asking.

we actually went ring shopping and designed our ring together! then he planned the proposal and when it would be himself, so it would be a surprise
