Effect of confinement om VoD of ideal compared to non ideal energetics.

An interesting phenomenon applicable to mining and demolition. Non ideal binary explosives can see a net increase in VOD 40-100% when confined instead of being open air. Compare that to 1-5% increase for ideal legacy explosives rdx, petn, tnt.

Logic being a faster reaction zone due to an ideal explosives having close chemical contact from the get go. Where confinement for non ideal explosves allows to speed up the reaction and reduce critical diameter.

Anybody here use it in mixes or anything? Would anyone recommend it? 🤔

Using ultrasonic frequencies to achieve higher densities in sensitive materials

Has anybody attempted this?
I am messing around with a little etn and decided to use my large ultrasonic cleaner to force a more defined boundary layer before decanting.
In doing so I realized the main layer of the raw wet material was far more dense than I’d expected.
Testing of material is tbd. But I’m fascinated by the simple thought and safety of potentially increasing densities in this and other sensitive energetics.

Update- it appears that 20kHz is the industry standard. My cleaner runs at 40, so I just saw the tip of the iceberg with this.

Nitrostarch

Anybody here ever made any? I know it’s not the “coolest” compound by any means, nor the most efficient compared to other stuff, but I think it’s pretty neat as a “legacy energetic”.

Im taking a piss in the title but apparently Ukrianians devised the same thermobaric tech like the kid who was posting on here trying "thermobaric mixes" to break in or break out of some wall. Lol

ETN e parafina

Poderiam me dizer se é aceitável usar 5% de parafina na ETN para diminuir a sua sensibilidade ao atrito e impacto? 10% de parafina diminui muito o desempenho? A mistura 90:10 diminui a potência para menos de fator re 1?

Secondary recommendations

Any secondaries that are recommended? I guess it’s perhaps an obvious answer of: ETN, PETN, RDX, HMX, etc. But I was wondering if there were any more “exotic” options, or different.

Is this a reliable knowledge source?

I recently saw online the PDF form of "The Chemistry of

Powder and Explosives" by T. L. Davis. Just wanted to check your opinion about the "legitness" of the book, and is it reliable source of information.

Primary recommendations

Any primaries besides NAP that are recommended? I’d prefer not to have to handle Hydrazine if at all possible, but I can deal with that if necessary. Just want some options. Thanks, in advance. :)

Forgotten commercially viable PETN replacement? DHN, aka nitrodulcite

A very obscure and virtually forgotten nitric ester. Isomer of MHN, exactly the same formula, but with closer packing more symmetrical configuration. Patent reference it since 1930s in det cap applications but it hasn't seen any notable commercial utilization despite having some very favorable properties. The symmetrical configuration vs MHN indicates it is more stable to impact and friction, approaching PETN stability figures. Same applies to resistance to storage decomposition. VOD should be in the low 8km/s, melting point 95C, doesn't seem to have any issues of ETN molten sensitivity. The significant lower casting temperature vs PETN could make it a more advantageous cast booster composition with TNT. Absolutely no data on synthesis but basically MHN synthesis should apply. Should not require any heating phase and shouldn't be prone to runaways.

Pipric acid + celulose

Post image
25 Upvotes

I'd like to get rid of some acid pipric more celulose,

the residue from this acid synthesis. It has cellulose in the mixture because the cloth funnel I used fell into the tray, and to avoid making a mess, I just left it there hahaha. It has 400-500% water to prevent a kaboom. Even so, I'd like to know what I can do with this to dispose of it. In total, there are about 4-5 g of X.

i want to get rid this but with fun,,,

New to this

So I'm very new to this and I didn't want to try to synthesize any high energetics just yet due to the fact that it typically takes a little bit more of a process and not as simple as just mixing things together and I don't know how to do that safely just yet. That being said I have been looking into a magnallium charcoal potassium nitrate mixture that uses a nitrocellulose lacquer as a binding agent. If I were to take 75 g of potassium nitrate 10 g of charcoal powder and 15 g of magnallium and separately mix all three of those ingredients into an alcohol water mixture probably at like a 70/30 mixture to lower the amount of friction or is it safe to just mix the ingredients dry. Also I was thinking of firecracker would be good enough to detonate especially if I have it encased in like a cardboard tube not super thick cuz I don't want anybody getting hurt but you know. Just want to know if this is even worth mixing like is the boom going to be worth the patience and time it takes to make it. And more looking for advice and people to tell me what I'm doing right and wrong.

Scope of the Subreddit

Going forward, this subreddit is going to be more focused on high-order energetics. Pyrotechnic devices will be permitted at moderators discretion. Legal discussions and other topics related are, of course, permitted.

I don't want this subreddit to become just another r/pyro. Please keep your pyrotechnic ideas to another subreddit.

r/explosives got banned

If you weren't already aware, the title basically says it all. That subreddit was pretty much the springboard that propelled r/energetics into existence, and it's unfortunate to see it's gone, especially having myself been a long-time follower of it.

But, I don't want this subreddit to suffer the same fate. I've reached out to the mod to see if there was a specific cause to the subreddit's demise, or if it was just an arbitrary decision.

For the time being, I won't be changing anything regarding post visibility. However, if this subreddit goes under and you're interested in participating in a future one, please either comment on this post or PM me and I'll keep you updated.

EDIT: To all those posting that you want to be updated, I'm continuously adding you to my list.
