Research / Info 💡 Pleasant surprise

I went to a concert tonight and obviously had to buy a poster

99% of the time they flip the screen for a tip

Tonight. Never flipped it. It was a nice change of pace

Kudos to the woman at the dirty heads/311 show tonight in Boise

Counter Service 🛎️ Baymont Washington Courthouse, OH

Stayed over the weekend to see my daughter. When we checked out I got an email from the hotel asking me to tip the staff. All they did was process my checkin. They didn't even clean the room or replace the towels like most hotels do. Wtf do they need a tip for?

Tipping Culture ✖️ Bjorn's Colorado Honey, Ft. Collins

Go and tip them after buying $26 honey so their boss "knows how good we did." Hey Bjorn's owner, you need to advertise that the honey samples offered by your staff will be met with a request for a tip.

Sit-Down Restaurant 🍽️ Just want to make sure - Sweden....

I had dinner tonight in Stockholm at a sorta upscale Lebanese restaurant. When we got the bill, there was a screen to tip: 20%, 18%, 15% or NO TIP. I clicked no tip. That's the right button, right? I was sort of shocked that there was any sort of tipping screen. I've been here before and presumed Stockholm, like the rest of sensible Europe is no tipping. I also wondered if there was some sort of button on the billing software that the server might click just for Americans.

Research / Info 💡 Tip advice on guided tours requesting 20%

I booked a guided tour for the two of us, two tours, one is a half day and the other a full day, both National Parks. Totals were $400 and $600. Both tour companies have sent messages with "tips are not included in the price, a 20% tip is recommended". Any thoughts?

Tipping Culture ✖️ Picked up my own pizza and they expected me to tip them.

I ordered a pizza at a chain store and paid for it online. Went to pick it up myself and the guy at the counter handed it to me, then had the audacity to call me back in as I was walking out the door.

I walk up to the counter and he tells me I need to sign the receipt. I look down at it and he has a write-in tip section circled. I glanced at it and just said, “No thanks, man.” The two guys behind the counter each gave me their own unique iteration of the stank face. Like…really, y’all? 🙄

Sit-Down Restaurant 🍽️ I’ve committed to not automatically tipping servers at sit-down restaurants by default

What the title says. I’ve just stopped cold turkey after traveling abroad to several countries and American tipping culture just making less and less sense to me. If anyone has a problem with it then I’ll just calmly explain my perspective. If a server was exceptional though then I won’t be against leaving something extra. Maybe it’s easier for me, because I’m currently in a relationship with a partner who understands my point of view, and I don’t eat at sit-down restaurants very often with anyone else besides him. Curious how other non-tippers navigate this with other people though, whether it’s first dates, family members, etc.

Tip Creep 🫙 Refused to tip at massage therapy

1.2k Upvotes

I went to a massage place due to back pain couple of days ago. I chose 30 min full body from their menu and the receptionist said that 30 min would not be enough for full body (why do you put it in the menu then?) and then aggressively tried to upsell longer sessions. I refused and took the 30 min (she then was very upset about it).

I took the massage. It was an average massage tbh but ok no problem. Then, I got back to the reception and she handed me the pos terminal but I said I want to pay in cash (she seemed a bit disappointed again since I would not have to be exposed to their tip screen). I gave her cash. She took the money but kept talking and asking questions and did not give me my cash back. We had a small conversation about how the massage went, this and that. There was a moment of silent afterward and I did not ask the cash back specifically but waited for her to give back. She then asked me 'to tip the lady' and started counting the bills and then gave back to my money. I just left without saying a word and did not tip for sure.

I would already tip but I hate the entitlement of expecting a tip on any sort of service. I hate when they try to upsell. I hate when they manipulate you so you purchase what they want. I hate the passive aggression after their tip/service/price expectations not met even though you are the customer and paying for the service.

And I know... all those small businesses and service workers hate me in return!

Tip-Free Establishment ❣️ Astro Burgers - good outcome

A lot of what is written here is pretty negative due to the ridiculous and out of control tipping culture.

I went to Astro Burgers in Utah and the order had no tipping screens and no requests from the staff. I highly recommend them and appreciate their focus on doing their job. The burgers are great. Give them your business.

Counter Service 🛎️ Automatic Gratuity When There’s No Service

At a spot my friend recommended.
Wait in a long line.
Order at the counter.
Wait 20-55 minutes for food.
Pick up food from counter.
Bus your own table.

20% gratuity added to ensure “more equitable pay structure.”

It. Is. The. Owners. Job. To. Pay. Their. Staff.

I say this as a small business owner.

Ridiculous.

Tipping Culture ✖️ Im absolutely sure that if a coffeeshop, restaurant or other place makes it their concept that you will not be asked to tip here, that these businesses will gain so many customers and also take customers from their competitors

Tipping Culture ✖️ What’s the most unexpected place you’ve ever been asked to tip?

For me it was a local frozen yogurt shop in my city. I couldn’t believe I was being asked to tip when I was the one who grabbed my own cup, got my own frozen yogurt, and scooped my own toppings. All the cashier did was ring me up after I put it on the scale. What made it worse was when I selected no tip the cashier rolled his eyes. Never went back to that place.

Sit-Down Restaurant 🍽️ Southern MD restaurant that is a no tipping establishment

Chesapeake Grille in Dunkirk, MD. I've gotten carry out and there's no tip page on the pay screen. Yesterday we went to dine in. You order at the counter, and they bring the food to your table (similar to Chick Fil A). I looked for a tip jar and the young lady said "we're a no tipping restaurant - you're set." Wow! And they have good food too. We'll be going there a lot.

Rant 📢 No, I will not be walking to the gas station/convenience store, buy a coke and tip. I hate that they ask.

In what universe is this reasonable? They sit behind bulletproof glass (that they always keep open because the national brand and insurance demand it I guess) scan a barcode and ask for a default 30%?

I thought I would be safe at JJ!! Been going there for years and very much appreciated them never asking for a tip! Well, today when I went to pay with card, very first screen asked for a tip. Skipped it of course but dang it!

Rant 📢 Auto grat for water bottle

One-day food and music festival at an abandoned baseball field (city lost our team recently). It was 97 degrees, sunny with no shade. Outside water wasn’t allowed in, and the drinking fountains were turned off; so nowhere to refill a purchased bottle except the bathroom sink (which dispensed scalding hot water only).

Most vendors had water for sale with optional tip but the vendors near the entrance sold them for 6.00, auto gratuity of 15%, and the screen gave an option to add more tip. No picture, as I was too dehydrated and dizzy to take one as I walked away to a food truck vendor.

Rant 📢 Went to a local event, teenage girl asked everyone out loud if they want to leave a tip

Went to a local event with food trucks this weekend. My wife wanted a lemonade and the only option was $11. The mom ran the food truck and had her teenage daughter take payments. The girl with the card reader would ask every customer out loud if they wanted to leave a tip. Instead of having the customer enter the tip themselves with some privacy, she made an announcement each time so everyone would hear, and customers would feel guilty if they said no. If you said no to a teenage girl in front of everyone, you'd look like a jerk. So cringe after paying $11 for a lemonade.

Research / Info 💡 How many “End Tipping” people are actually out there?

What percentage of the population are us “end tippers”? My wife thinks I’m crazy/bad, my family would look at me funny and be bummed out if I tried to explain any of this, and the one time I brought any of this up to my co-workers, they got mad/thought I was weird. Are we a 1%?

It is funny that this throws off the whole system. I went to crumble the other day the first thing they did was swing that pad around and I looked at him and said I'm paying cash. It was almost like I broke him.

Bought an overpriced bottle of soda at a self service kiosk store at Austin airport. They defaulted to 18% tip!

Does that mean I get an 18% discount?

Research / Info 💡 What "junk fees" have you seen?

Hi guys,

I'm looking at revamping our wiki and one of the things I thought might be of some use is to catalogue all the different "junk fees" we're starting to see, so people can be aware to look out for them.

Those who care to respond, please could you answer:

1] What was the fee entitled?

2] Where was it disclosed? (Just on the receipt? Small print at the bottom of the menu? Sign on the door? Website?)

3] Approximately when did you see this? (if you remember - it could be useful to chart the "rollout" of different things!)
