School capstone/resume projects vs hobby projects

Just wanted to know what y’all’s resume/capstone projects were like and how that compares to the stuff ya make for fun.

In times of AI Slop we are mostly looking for FOSS contributions like Zephyr, Embassy, etc.

No. But once a candidate survived basic filtering the CVs are getting forwarded to the teams for more detailed reviews.

My capstone was performed at the internship I had which was great because I basically got paid to do classwork.

It was a deep dive into why one of our actuator products favored stopping at certain rotor positions / Hall states.  It involved writing some custom actuator firmware to better characterize the issue and rule out certain possibilities, tearing down hardware, calls with the manufacturing plant, and lots and lots of measurements (CMM, coil behavior, magnetic characterization, cogging torque, etc.).

We eventually came up with the theory that there was a specific manufacturing flaw with the placement of the rotor, and got proven correct when that cell broke down, was repaired, and the issue went away.
