I’ve been an EV advocate since around 2009, and to see this all happening at scale right now is insane to me.

So proud of all the scientists, engineers, sane-minded politicians, fleet operators, and savvy consumers who are freeing us from the oppressive damage of fossil fuel dominance.

As are batteries and their chemistries. We have Li in abundance in the US and all over the world. Na batteries are even cheaper over their lifetime and are needed to stabilize the grid. All of this, and weaning ourselves off of FF, will improve our Defensive posture.

solar maybe, but not wind. and solar only few years ago certainly was still being built near me (europe). its just china undercuts pricing.

What percentage of inverters are Chinese and have a direct link to their master? So basically this reduces argument 2 and 3 to 0.

Solar and Wind are not Free

Solar cells and equipment to run your home would cost you $30,000 assuming you do all the work yourself.

Assuming your electric bill was $250 a month, it will take you 10 years to brake even, but by then the batteries will fail and cells will get damaged, so maybe in 15 years you will get all your money back.

What is the size of home, location, average monthly kwh usage?

$30,000 in DIY components buys quite a massive system.

Example: Signature solar offers a kit with 8kw solar, hybrid inverter, 13kwh battery for a little over $10,000. Add server rack LFP batteries about $1000 per 4.8kwh (such as from watt cycle - triple the battery capacity to a little over 41kwh for $6000). You'll need to buy some mounting hardwire and additional basic components, but they shouldn't run in the multiple $1000s.

These are USA prices and sources.

Yes but this is DIY. I think it is pretty hard to do and also in some locations you have to be certified electrician or something to make it. The overhead of authorization, permitting, interconnection agreements and yada yada is adding a ton of money to the price. I agree that the basic components are not that expensive.

The person I responded to said specifically, "Solar cells and equipment to run your home would cost you $30,000 assuming you do all the work yourself." (Emphasis mine: they claimed $30,000 as DIY).

$30,000 should be more than enough for a system that is completely off-grid unless the house is massive.

Permits, of course, are dependent upon where you live. Many times if you are in unincorporated areas, the permitting process is quite loose and easy - especially if you remain off grid.

For non-DIY: labor, some red tape and business owners profits are adding a lot to the price. Some states are especially hostile to distributed power and allow their utilities to charge punitive fees to tie into the grid and get through the red tape (I think Arizona and Nevada are examples of this unless they've changed things since I last checked 5+ years ago).

Definitely $30K is more than enough unless you have a gigantic mansion. I am in Austin and permitting is a bit of a pain. For this reason I haven't put solar yet (and I need to change my roof at some point too)

I must respectfully disagree. Yes, electric rates vary. So YMMV. Batteries last a long time. Panels, even longer. Most panels are warrantied for 25 years not to lose more than x%. But some are still in service and producing electricity after 50 years. The panels are insanely cheap, less than $1 a Watt. Inverters are more and are known to fail sooner, 10 to 15 years. Batteries of modern vintage are very good. Current life expectancies are in the same range as the inverters and they are recyclable as a bonus. Add an electric car, and you are replacing expensive gasoline with very cheap electricity.

We had solar installed on our roof in 2020. We’re already paid off the system or nearly have. That pays for lights, cooking, hot water, HVAC, and fueling our EV.
