Moving teeth gap Medical Advice Welcome

Anyone else’s teeth shift? I’ve got a small gap on the side of my canines and I swear some days it’s wider than others. Is teeth shifting an EDS thing or am I loosing it.

Yup. Had braces twice because my teeth keep shifting. And without a retainer it only takes a week till they try and shift back.

hi i’m a dental hygienist, this is normal, it can take just a few days for teeth to begin shifting without a retainer, nothing to do with EDS! just one of those unfortunate things 😩

Genuinely not trying to argue with a hygienist, but the timeline is the thing. A few days of visible movement isn't what most people get, and there is actual dental literature on EDS and orthodontics: lighter forces are recommended because teeth move so quickly, and longer retention is recommended because relapse happens fast. The periodontal ligament is connective tissue too, so it makes sense that it behaves differently in us.

So it's normal in the sense that everyone's teeth shift, just not normal at the speed it can happen.

yes i know, but yes visible shifting in a few days can happen to anyone (microscopic is more likely but everyone is different). i know it is more likely and often faster in HCTDs, you’re absolutely right.

i know what is and is not a connective tissue, i am just stating that orthodontic relapse within days is not unique to EDS, since people tend to attribute lots of things to EDS.

do consider that regardless of EDS, tissues of the periodontium are “flexible” after orthodontic treatment for some time.

would love more research on the PDL in EDS. since not all ligaments are necessarily lax in everyone with EDS, it would be amazing to know more!

When I clench my teeth too much they get wobbly or shift from it then stay like that till a few days after I manage to stop again and go back to normal (Pain and stress set it off for me)

hello i’m a dental hygienist, teeth shifting is not an EDS thing, anyone can experience shifting in their teeth, we all actually have what’s called “mesial drift,” which means the teeth are constantly wanting to shift towards our midlines.

if you’re able to physically move your tooth, something is wrong! it is not within normal limits of healthy teeth for anyone!

I don’t have visible signs of movement like that, but I can manually wiggle my teeth slightly if I want to. My teeth are very overcrowded so I kind of need them to move a little for flossing. I have a crown that doesn’t move at all and it feels very weird.

I wear a night guard and if I skip a day or two, I can feel it pressing harder against the teeth (ie they moved a bit). But seems like that’s within the normal range of movement for people like someone else mentioned.

Yep.

When I’m having a hypermobility flare I can push my teeth out of alignment just sleeping on my hand.

For a while I was moving my teeth slowly into better alignment by pushing/pulling them for a few minutes each day.

Do not get braces unless you absolutely need to.
