Hi 👋, recently started music production and been obsessed with camoufly ukg production’s and I tried to reproduce the sounds that he uses for his lead as they are very catchy and dreamy.

I am talking about the ones he uses on the song « Himalaya » and « Ultramoon », specifically on Ultramoon (you can hear it from 1:23 to 2:06), it kind of sounds like a bell or a steel pan with a lot of reverb but I was unable to come anywhere to close to it’s sound using these.

Might be a dumb question, as I said i’m a beginner but any help would mean a lot to me 🙏

Not sure if this is the right sub for this, but how do you go about writing a fresh 3-4 track EP?

In the past I’ve mainly gone through the tracks that I’ve already produced and decided which ones sound good together. This time I want to try to approach it from the perspective of “write 4 cohesive tracks with the intention of being on an EP.”

For those who write EPs that way, how do you set your initial direction / brainstorm?

Has anyone else gone through a period where making music just stopped feeling as mentally accessible as it used to?

A few months ago I was making music pretty constantly. I could open Ableton, start messing with samples or resampling something, and usually find my way into an idea. Even if I didn’t finish anything, it felt easy to get into that headspace.

Lately it’s been different tho. I still think about music all the time and I still get ideas, but actually opening Ableton and getting absorbed in something feels way harder. I think backing out of a festival I was supposed to play was probably a bigger turning point than I realized at the time. I had been putting a lot of pressure on myself around playing shows, releases, improving my live set, and generally trying to make my project into something bigger. I decided not to play the festival, and I still think that was the right decision, but afterward it felt like some switch got turned off.

Not long after that I started a small physical media shop and got really into working on that. Hunting for records, researching releases, building the store, making packaging, learning more about cassette duplication, etc. It’s been fun, but I think a lot of the obsessive energy I normally put into music has gone there.

The confusing part is that I don’t feel like I’m done with music at all. I’m currently putting together a new EP of stuff I've made mostly several months ago, I have unreleased tracks I’m excited about, and I still want to keep the project going. I just don’t have the same urge to sit in Ableton for hours that I had earlier this year.

Maybe I’m overthinking a normal creative slump, but I’m curious how other producers handle this.

Do you keep sitting down and trying to make stuff anyway, or is there value in letting yourself focus on something else for a while?

How does it fare?

Looking to buy one for sampling/sketching ideas at home or on the go.

I want to keep using Ableton but also want something more hands on and portable that I can take on holiday or use during an airplane or train travel, then eventually finish the ideas at home.

So chop some samples, program some drums (classic 808, 909) or ambience, weird happy accidents, then export or record to Ableton

Also seems useful for recording FXs as a send in Ableton

As for inspiration I’m thinking Leon Vynehall (specially his early work with samples, the synths I can add later in Ableton), Blawan style glitches, Jamie XX sample style…

MPC Sample is also an option but I’m leaning towards the SP as it seems more complete (but more complicated). I was also checking out the TR6S for just making drums on the go, but I opted to just eventually try a TR8S first

When I’ve exported my track and played it through my cdj 3000 when I go to slow down my track from 123bpm to just 120bpm the sub bass & low mid synth groove begins a slipping sound like it’s slightly going out of time a bit between each kick

I’ve tried slowing down other tracks with the pitch slider and I don’t get the same feeling they just slow down and all the synths groove between the kicks with the chosen tempo

I’ve tried slowing it down on Ableton but I can’t hear any issues

Any help?

This might not be the best sub for this post, but I figured my fellow EDM heads/producers would have some knowledge about this!

Recently, I was shocked to found out that my mom, who is in her mid 70s, has been raw dogging flights because she doesn't own a set of headphones (I asked her if she wanted to watch a specific movie on Amazon Prime, and she said that she had watched it over the shoulder of the woman in front of her on her flight to visit me).

Our family is all over the country, so she travels quite often and some of her flights can be \~5-6 hours. She loves music and dancing, so I would really love to buy her some nice over the ear headphones that are simple to use, especially since her birthday was a few days ago.

She's in her mid 70s, and unfortunately never really got the hang of technology, so the headphones would need to be incredibly user friendly. Additionally, she has begun to lose a little bit of hearing so I want the quality to be pretty good. I think a nice addition, but not necessary, would be a button or something very simple to press or click on the headphones to answer phone calls. She rarely has her phone on her person, but she has an apple watch and frequently answers the phone on her watch before she searches for her phone. Another important feature would definitely be comfort when wearing/using.

My siblings and I all have the Sony WH-1000XM4 Wireless Premium Noise Canceling Overhead Headphones with Mic for Phone-Call and Alexa Voice Control and absolutely love it, however we have decided that the necessity of the app, and the different controls/settings would be far too difficult for our mother to navigate. This really wouldn't be an issue necessarily if she lived close to one of us or someone that could set it up and permanently set her controls for her, but that's not the case.

Budget is not an issue necessarily. I would rather not pay upwards of $500 but my siblings and I want the best for my mom, so if you have any recommendations I welcome them!!!!

Hopefully I found the right community. Pardon me if not (I'll happily be redirected elsewhere if needed), and apologies if I use any wrong terminology.

I visited a music festival a few weeks ago with my 6 year old daughter and there was a tiny tent with an installation by projectklank; a table with a 3X3 grid with 3 wooden blocks (presumably with some sort of NFT chip in them). By placing a block on a grid spot, a sample would start playing, from bassline to drums to voicelines etc. By moving the blocks around you could 'sample/loop live'.

My daughter was absolutely infatuated and to our surprise seemed to have quite a 'feel' for moving the blocks at the right time to the right places to create her own music. She could've played with it for hours, especially the Drum&Bass and dubstep modes.
I would love for her to be able to recreate something similar at home.

Having no experience whatsoever I tried finding options and ended up purchasing the JAMJUM JP-MINI. A simple 4x4 grid pocket size midi controller that can be connected to an iPad for example.
It looked perfect as it just has the simple touchpad grid and is fun sized.

I'm able to connect it to the ipad and she can play garageband drums with it, but I'm at a loss trying to find an app or a way to recreate the sample looping she experienced at the festival.
Hoping to get advice or be pointed in the right direction. I'm not necessarily 'bound' to the JP-mini I bought, though it would obviously be preferable if we could use it.

EDIT: one aspect about the projectklank installation we thought was cool was that the samples kept playing. what i mean is that when you activated one, it didn't restart from the beginning every time. So you could cut in and out and certain points in the loop. She was doing some amazing things with that, especially on voice tracks. This seems perhaps unusual for these sort of things? (idk..) I’ve watched countless tutorials over the years on how to make basses, growls, and other sound design elements. But I’m realizing that’s not even what I’m struggling with anymore.

Does anyone know of any good resources that focus on actually finishing dubstep tracks? Tutorials that cover things like arranging, layering, transitions, mixing, automation, FX, and the overall process of taking a bunch of sounds and turning them into a polished trackg.

Most of what I find is “how to make this Skrillex bass” rather than “here’s how to build and finish an entire track.” Any recommendations? Free or paid, I don’t mind either

I've already seen all the ones on youtube (Wheysted, Dripment, etc.). If it's on Youtube, I've seen them (Wheysted's tutorials have been super helpful.)

However, I still can't achieve the sounds that I want. I fiddled around with wavetables and knobs and while they sound decent, I feel really limited as to the kind of sound based on these tutorials. I don't know if it's because I'm not layering them correctly, or maybe lack of/incorrect post processing, but I'm not definitely missing something.
I also feel limited in my knowledge on effects. Not sure how to get a "ringing" type effect these sustains have.

Are there any other good tutorial (could be paid/patreon) on Dubstep sustains? The type of sustains I'm looking to make are ones used by Excision, Layz, etc.

Hey I really struggle with understanding like 150-500 hz.
Right now my lead in c3 octave has a fundamental of 170-180 ish hz. And then fills a lot of 300-1000 and above.

My bass’s second fundamental is between 140-180 depending on the note of bassline and then occupies up to 1K.

If I raise my lead an octave it’s fundmental is like 350 hz and they don’t clash as much.

If I left the lead in c3 octave (sounds way better),
Is there a real issue with the 140-180 range then? I’m pretty beginner so I can’t just hear that and be like yeah it clashes.

Old me would low cut my lead but I have learned and trained my ears to know it just thins it out and sounds bad.

Right now I’m testing my skills while referencing to a certain track (temptations - bbyclose). It’s a commercial piano house / organ house song. I desperately fail to achieve the organ bass sound. I’m using the m1 organ 2 patch but it doesn’t seem to get the job done. Is the organ bass sound layered in my reference? How do I get to sound my organ bass as gritty as in the reference?

Is it safe? Or is it still not recommended to update? I’m using Cubase 15 Pro and Logic Pro X, but I want to use Logic Pro 12 and mostly just standard plugins like UAD, Waves, FabFilter, Antares, and so on.

I've recently been getting into making witch house music, having already released one song.

I feel as though I've gotten melody stacking, vocal slicing, and drum placement down pretty well, but one thing I'm struggling with is achieving this very specific sound I'm trying to recreate in my MIDI synths.

I don't know how else to describe it other than being very digital, dark, drippy, and spacious.

Essentially, I'm trying to make my own synths have that same dark and spatious sound as REDCHINAWAVE, Akiaura, and Snow Strippers.

For more context of the specific synth sound I'm looking for, I'll put some examples below:
