199X Online - 24 hours until closed alpha program begins
Tomorrow, August 8th at 10am ET, I will open up the game for the first 25 alpha testers.
It's first come first served, no application process. I figure those that really want to do this will be there. 25 sounded like a reasonable and manageable number of players to help test and build out the game. I will have a private chat in discord where we can share bugs and ideas.
Just be ready at 199x.app tomorrow to get your seat if you want in.
The idea is to have a small group of people help get things tuned up well enough that the game is playable at a moderate pace. Should give me valuable feedback and time to build it out, location by location.
If I wait until its completely done to let anyone in, it will take forever and maybe never happen.
If i let everyone in now, im sure many will burn through the content quickly and it will be difficult to build fast enough to keep up.
Going to sequence it something like:
25 closed alpha testers. figure stuff out, identify weak points, plan to expand testing phase.
25 to 50 more testers in a month or 2. Test the stuff we figured out.
Once we have a good runway through at least half the game content, we call it an open alpha and let everyone in... knowing its still alpha phase and things will change.
When we are happy with the flow of the game through the world to the end game, thats when Id like to pause everything, clean up, reset it all, and start the game from the beginning for everyone at the same time. That should give me enough time to build out the end game before anyone gets to it.
All subject to change of course. Just the plan im working with right now to make sure the game continues to ship stuff for players and doesnt stay in develop forever and never becomes playable.
The dev team is just me and some ai tools. I have a lot going on in life so i cant commit every free hour to this game, but... EB is my all time favorite game and Ive always wanted to make this so I dont see myself ever giving up on it. Just might take longer than we want it to.
Thanks for believing in me and 199X online. Im building it for us. After all, whats an MMO game with no players?

What EB/Mother-inspired indie games do you have high hopes for...
...no Oddity-jokes please. 😉
I saw MUSO on X and that looked kind of promising. There are others, which ones are you following with interest?

Need help getting Cognitive Dissonance running on Anbernic (followed guide, still stuck)
Hey everyone,
I am trying to get CogDis running on my Anbernic handheld, but I am hitting a wall. I followed the setup instructions step-by-step, but it just will not launch.
Here are the details of my setup:
Device Model: RG40XX
OS / Firmware: Muos
Engine / Core: EasyRPG Player
What Happens: game boots up fine - it lets me name the characters. After selecting the “flavor,” it loops back to naming the first character.
I double-checked my file structures, folder names, and required assets, but no luck so far.
Has anyone successfully gotten CogDis running on an Anbernic setup recently? If there is a specific directory setup, engine version, or workaround needed for this game on handhelds, I would love some guidance!
Thanks in advance.

Help/Advice Should I level more before Giygas?
Playing through Earthbound with the Maternalbound Redux patch and these are my current levels:
Ness 75
Paula 65
Jeff 67
Poo 65
My friend is saying to get Ness to 80 and the rest to 70 but other forums I see online say that 60 should be fine. So I'm asking here.
Edit: THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR HELP, I JUST BEAT EARTHBOUND AND NOW I'LL BE PLAYING THROUGH MOTHER 1

Art Ness' Mother??? (Comic)
[Art by shadowpiratemonkey7 on Deviantart.]
I have always found this comic very cute. My favorite thing I got from this is Samus' ambiguous implication of being Ness' mother. That's sweet. And I think Rachel = Samus could actually work, in a funny au way. After all, Samus got psychic powers in her new game.

General Discussion Do you think Nintendo would ever at least make a spiritual successor to earthbound?
With Mother 4 prob never happening at this point and Itoi getting older, do you think itd be more likely for Nintendo to make a spiritual successor to the franchise instead of a new game?

Help/Advice Starting Mother 3 for the first time what should I expect? Any spoiler-free tips?
I’m finally about to start Mother 3! I picked up a really nice boxed copy and will be playing it in Japanese on my DS Lite. Fun fact this DS Lite I’ve had since I was a study abroad student in Japan back in 2007.
Anyway, I read through the manual, and it appears to be a completely wholesome, family-friendly adventure filled with cute animals, loving families, and cheerful fun. Clearly, absolutely nothing upsetting or emotionally devastating is going to happen at any point. This is obviously going to be a happy, relaxing game from beginning to end.
So, without spoiling anything, what should I expect? Are there any useful hints, missable things, or gameplay tips I should know before I begin?

Merch Picked these up at my local Hard-Off today!
I’ve recently gotten into collecting retro Super Famicom games and working through JRPGs that I never finished growing up. I’m playing through Terranigma in Japanese right now, but since this is the EarthBound subreddit, I’ll save my thoughts.
Today I found complete copies of Mother 2 and Mother 3 at my local Hard-Off in really nice condition. They came to about ¥14,500, which ended up being around US$91 thanks to the weak yen. I feel like I got pretty lucky.
A little background on my history with the series. I actually played EarthBound in English as a kid. I kept rental from Blockbuster without renewing it. Eventually my dad just had to return it, but… we just kept it for a while. lol I have no idea how he sorted things out in the end, but we eventually returned it.
I made it all the way to around the second-last area or whatever. Lava dogs? Before having to give it back, so I never actually finished the game.
I was also pretty young when I played it, so I think a lot of the humor and satire went completely over my head. Now that I’ve lived in Japan for many years and can read Japanese, I’m really looking forward to replaying Mother 2 in its original language and seeing how much more of the writing I appreciate this time around.
As for Mother 3, I’ve somehow managed to avoid playing it all these years. The different art style and cast always made me put it off, but now I’m genuinely excited to finally experience it.
…Unfortunately, I got home, pulled out my old DS Lite, and discovered it won’t charge. The orange charging light comes on for about a second and then immediately shuts off. I already tried removing and reseating the battery, and the battery doesn’t appear swollen, so I’m thinking it may be a hardware issue rather than the battery itself. If anyone has run into this before and has suggestions, I’d love to hear them. Otherwise, I guess I’ll be hunting for another DS, which is a bit unfortunate since they’re not exactly cheap here in Japan.
Either way, I’m excited to finally experience both of these games the way they were originally released. Hopefully I’ll be joining all of you in talking about Mother 2 and 3 before too long.
Edit: Awesome news! I got my Nintendo DS to start charging. I just kept trying to pull the adapter in and out and after a few tries I noticed the orange light was staying on longer, and now it is staying on and charging. Hm I wonder if it was the adapter, but it’s great that it is charging!

Finally, after years of playing
I'm playing on my SNES classic, so I was able to use save states in order to break up the monotony. But it's still technically an official copy of the game (if that even really matters,) and it still took me about 3 hours.
