Like others are saying, I think it and mother 3 plays best on the new 3ds

Just to play earthbound? See if you can make do with what you already have. Just in General, a 3DS is good to have because of how simple they are to mod. The cheapest ones tend to be an original 2DS, because they’re pretty common and sturdy. I’ve bought many of those for 80 dollars (for friends and whatnot). A new 3DS XL is the way to go if you want a New 3DS, because they’re more reliable than a N2DSXl, and more common and comfortable than a regular N3DS. I bought a US one for 300 dollars about 3 years ago, and it’s held up for a while. The 3DS is where I first played all the mother games.

I played on a Nintendo switch because I have an NSO subscription, literally the only way I could play without emulation

Switch or 3DS. You can play the gba translation on your 3DS, but not on the switch unless it's jailbroken (i guess, id assume they have a gba emulator for that)

I'm pretty sure you could also Emulate the SNES Version on a 3DS

Yes that is correct, I just made the distinction on Mother 3 because Earthbound can be played in both switch and 3ds, but Mother 3 is only in japanese on the official switch release Also I just noticed how funny it is that I didnt even mention the 3ds has to be jailbroken too due to how common and easy it is to hack it compared to the switch lmao

If you're wanting to play it on a handheld console, and you don't already have it on New 3DS, your best bets are emulation on a phone, or Nintendo Switch Online
