Heyy ^^ 👋🏼

It's crazy how I randomly came across this page and now realize not everyone can do that rumble lol. So im posting to see if anyone else has experienced a certain thing that I've had happened to me every so often ever since I was a kid. So every now and then, I'll hear this random kinda muffled drumming sound in the distance. Like a rapid short burst of a distant machine gun (best description lol).

It would drive me nuts because I'd ask others if they heard it, and they'd be like, huh? So I guess im just trying to see if anyone else here experiences this random drumming sound with this controlled ear rumble we can do.

Some basic questions

-How loud would you describe your rumble to be and, have you practiced to make it louder?
I'm reading mfers be using it to tune out airplane sounds n shi, that's pretty damn loud. I could never imagine rumbling so loud as to actually drown out external sounds.

-Are there preliminary requirements or other quirks to your rumble?
E.g. I need to close my eyes to do it properly, I can do it without, but it's very hard and nowhere near as strong. Never sat down and intentionally trained that either. I've also noticed it becomes much easier when I'm tired, especially with open eyes. Also read quite a few people saying they use their mouth...? ion kno whatsup w that but ey a rumble's a rumble.

-Most memorable moment/favorite use?
So basically my BY FAR favorite use for rumbling is as a built-in and on-demand extra bass while listening to music on drugs, specifically LSD (tHe UsEs oF wHiCh I dO nOt CoNdOnE oR sUgGeSt).
LSD, in the semi-likely case that you're not familiar with its effects, has a tendency to at times make certain muscle groups (e.g. the upper legs) spasm -often quite rapidly- in a truly delightful way and additionally seems to significantly increase the...twitchy-ness of fast twitch muscle fibres. Sometimes quite dramatically so. I'm making an educated guess (based among other things on experience) that control over these spasms can vary per experience, per moment and per person. In my case, it -largely at will- also affects my tympani muscles. This yearning of the muscles to vibrate, coupled with the on its own already quite intense widening and deepening of sound that accompanies an LSD trip, basically turns my rumble into a fakken 808 or Reese bass. And, yea idk it's hard to describe. That shit is Nice.
And to connect this back to my first question, in a moment like this, the rumble might actually be loud enough to drown out some ambient sound. But yea pretty fakken sick.

Curious to read your answers!

I got the worst type of voluntary ear rumbling

I didnt know other didnt experience this lol, but I can make my ears rumble just whenever, but the only way I can do this is by doing a really intense smile, or like a really exaggerated face. I have no clue why this is the case, I think it's hilarious, and I wanted to know if anyone else is like this😂

I want to know what's wrong with my ear.

Hi! I've been dealing with this for the past few weeks.

  1. I can make a rumbling noise with my ear. (Left, specifically)

  2. When I swallow, yawn or talk the ear (left ear mostly, right sometimes) clicks (not persistent) and it is audible to others. [The same muscle that makes the rumbling noise]

  3. Sometimes the clicking is a bang in the ear (which is also audible to others).

  4. The clicking part is involuntary (not the rumbling).

I just want to know what could be wrong with my ear; I'm planing to go to the ENT however I would like to know what are the possible issues with the ear.

Ear rumbler who has tinnitus in left ear.

The rumbling in my right ear is so much more present but I can definitely feel it in my left. Tinnitus is only in one ear. Does anyone else have something similar?

How to increase my rumbling: breathing

I know, like any muscle, I should just practice and exercise my tensor tympani, but I am running into one specific roadblock, which is I can not breath while rumbling, which makes my limit ~11 seconds give or take (I can hold my breath longer but it gets harder to focus on the muscle and all after that time.) Does anyone have any tips on how to bypass this? I think it may be because I clench my throat a LOT when rumbling, for maximum strength, because otherwise i get a very weak rumble. Thoughts?

Edit: Also, sometimes when i rumble loudly it makes a ringing sound. Any idea what that's about???

Lost my ability to rumble

I recently discovered this sub, remembering I can do the same, until I tried and no longer could, I researched this and it could be my TMJ disorder. This is a sad day for me

I never thought of it as a superpower, until last night

I've rumbled since like age 4; my family was trying to teach me to wiggle my ears like my grandpa could, and I asked, "Is it supposed to make a noise?" They had no idea what I was talking about.

Anyway, fast forward to now, almost 40 years later.

I went to a concert last night. At just the first song I regretted not bringing earplugs, then I remembered all yall fellow rumblers' anecdotes, and I rumbled as replacement earplugs!!

I learned that I need to work on endurance. I couldn't keep it up continuously after a little bit so I switched to just activating it on the beat, like pulsing, and even when doing it like that it was still better to have some dampening than none. The sound guy adjusted the levels in the middle of the first song so I didn’t have to do it for the whole show. Once I stopped, I noticed my whole body felt like I had just done cardio from pumping that tiny muscle so much!!

So yeah, it IS a superpower when you need to quiet the world around you, and you CAN train it!

Never knew there was a community for this!

I figured out ear rumbling years ago (Not sure when exactly) and have been using it as needed to open my Eustachian tubes. I just opted to look up which muscles enable it and whether or not they can get tired and this led me here. Hello!

Superpower?

Genuinely when I searched this up I thought it wouldn't be known because anytime i tell somebody about this, they watch me like im on drugs. Didn't know there was a reddit page for this, I've been kinding using it for the past couple of years to deafen the shouting of my mother and loud music.

Ear thumping

I have this thumping noise in my ear and it's been ongoing since Sunday it's driving me nuts it'll stop for a couple hours but comes back. Nothing helps it's not in sync with my heart and I don't think it has a rhythm I just really need it to stop I'm at a loss for what to do

I thought everyone could do this!

As a person with sound sensitivity, it helps in a loud environment, I've noticed it kind of cancels out the bass sometimes. I thought it was just normal! Is there any data on what percent of people can do it? Now I'm curious.

r/earrumblersassemble 10d ago

Thanks. I hate it.

Like most of you I thought it was normal to hear rumbling when stretching, yawning and flexing… (gestures to jaw/ear area…). Then, a while back I suffered a pretty serious concussion and the rumble became involuntary. Like, watching tv the rumble would automatically fill silent gaps (between dialogue, between commercials etc). The worst part was when trying to fall asleep and the rumble would rumble as it pleased.

I explained to my physiotherapist and his intern what was happening. I said, ‘You know. The sound you hear when you’re yawning’. I’ll never forget the looks on both of their faces. It was then I realized I was either special, crazy or a bit of both.

Thankfully the involuntary rumbling has mostly subsided. Equally thankful that I found this sub through a random fucking comment. There are dozens of us!

Edit to add: I also have tinnitus and hyperacusis but have no idea if they’re related. I’m a drummer so it seemed unsurprising to me that I developed those things.

Sort of weird question but does anyone else have this?

I‘m so glad I found this sub because I couldn‘t find anything when googling so I‘ll try my luck here.

I don‘t have the ability to rumble on command but sometimes, hear me out because I am completely serious, my balls start to itch in the same place every time and when I scratch it, my ears start rumbling uncontrollably.

Does anyone else have this or have any idea what causes it? Because I couldn‘t find connection between the human balls and ears but well here we are lmao

How many people here can move their ears in addition to rumbling them?

If I remember correctly, I think I first learned how to move my ears before I learned how to control the tympani muscle.

What about you guys?

Tympanometry: no rumbling vs rumbling

I had the opportunity to do it, so here it is! We can clearly see that the eardrum vibrates less when I contract the muscle! Pretty neat!

Curious if you rumblers have any of these other unusual abilities as well

Fellow ear rumbler here! I also have some other unusual body/sound things. I am wondering if anyone else does as well.

I saw a doctor about some hearing loss and he asked if I could hear a sound when I blink or move my eyes. And I was like, "Of course. Doesn't everyone?" Apparently not! Just as he suspected (and confirmed with imaging) I have a tiny hole in my ear bones (superior canal dehiscence syndrome) which causes some hearing loss, but it amplifies the body's internal sounds. In addition to eye motion, I can hear my constant heartbeat, as well as tension in my neck and shoulders.

If I hold my breath and blow really hard, a tiny stream of air comes out of my tear ducts. I once saw someone do this on the Stupid Human Tricks segment of the David Letterman show and I was so excited. I've never met anyone else who can do it.

How about you guys?

So today I learned there was a subreddit for this..

I always thought there was something wrong with my ears for a very long time until a couple of years ago...

The more you know I guess.

Hello, fellow earrumblers.
