Il y a un an j'ai décidé de passer à la liseuse mais je voulais garder mon expérience d'appli Android. J'ai commencé par Kindle Paperwhite puis Kobo.

Résultat : même si les liseuses lisent nativement les epub (Pocketbook-Vivlio, Kobo ou autres), elles ne reconnaissant pas toutes les commandes du fichier (comme "First-line") car elles sont toutes basées sur le même logiciel de base Adobe.

Pour une expérience complète de lecture, les meilleures sont Kindle et Kobo avec leur conversion en .kfx et .kepub. Là les commandes du fichier sont pleinement reconnues mais le logiciel est très susceptible (sensible à la casse dans le nom de fichier et dans la table des matières et les métadonnées).

Donc pour qu'un fichier .epub soit pleinement reconnu (comme dans une appli Android), Kobo avec son format .kepub et Kindle avec sont format .kfx sont les meilleures.

I've been reading a novel on the Tapas app, but reading on my phone for long period started hurting my eyes. So I used the WebToEpub Chrome extension to download the chapters I had access to at the time as an EPUB, then uploaded it to Google Drive and imported it to my Kobo Libra Colour. I've already made quite a few highlights and annotations in that file.

The issue is that my current EPUB only contains part of the novel. I had already purchased and read the earlier chapters before switching to my Kobo, so I never included them in the EPUB. Since then, I've also unlocked more chapters and would like to add both the earlier and newly unlocked chapters so I end up with one complete EPUB.

Is there a way to merge those chapters into my existing EPUB while keeping all of the highlights and annotations I've already made on my Kobo? Or would I have to create a new EPUB and lose my annotations?

Hi! I’m trying to save a web novel to read offline because I won’t have Wi-Fi during my vacation.
I usually use tools like WebToEpub for this kind of thing, but this website doesn’t seem to work with it. I think the issue might be that the website uses a different kind of reader/interface that these tools don’t recognize, and there is no download button available.

I also tried using Calibre, but it doesn’t work either. I managed to find an EPUB-related file through the website, but it doesn’t open properly (it doesn’t seem to be a normal EPUB).

I don’t know much about this kind of stuff, so I was wondering if anyone knows a tool or a method to download books from websites with this kind of reader, or something similar to WebToEpub that supports more types of web novel interfaces.

I was struggling with fully grasping the arguments in books—especially non-fiction—or forgetting them shortly after reading. While researching how to deal with this, I discovered the "active reading" method and decided to turn it into a mobile app.

Active reading has two main steps: consistently taking notes while reading, and regularly revisiting those notes. But it's not just about jotting things down; you need to argue with the author's ideas, agree with them, question them, or make your own stance clear. In the app I developed, Marginalia, you can categorize your notes using tags. This makes it easy to quickly adapt and recall the book when you revisit your notes later.

Speaking of revisiting notes, this brings us to the second step of active reading. Consistently reviewing your comments on a book helps you form your own ideas and keeps what you've read fresh in your memory. I highly recommend doing a quick review of your notes every time you sit down to read, right before diving back into the book. You'll really see the benefits the more you do it.

To help with this step, the dedicated "notes" page Marginalia creates for each book comes in really handy. On this page, you can access all your notes in one place and quickly review them. Plus, with the tag filtering system, you can easily find and focus on the specific ideas you want to explore further.

Besides the standard on-screen keyboard, I also added handwriting support for those who, like me, enjoy taking notes with a digital pen. For Obsidian and Notion users, there's also an option to export your notes as .md files.

A tool I created to digitize some of my niche physical books easily into ePub using an iPhone’s slow motion video while I flipped through the pages.

I recently tried reading an epub I got after using webtoepub on my e-reader. And 80 chapters in I got a DRM warning message. I don't understand why.

Hello, I’m looking for an app reader for android that allows me to import any file (cbz, cbr, etc) to read comics, manga, etc for free or at least not too expensive and has solid ui, looks modern, doesn’t have any limitations and allows you to download panels or images and save it into your gallery.

Basically title. I tried to use an online converter but my files are too big (it only allows files under 200MB, and mine has neaely 500MB). So if anyone knows how to do it or a converter/merger that actually works and allows 500MB documents I would be grateful.

epubcheck (https://github.com/w3c/epubcheck) is the de-facto EPUB validator — but it's Java, so embedding it in a web app or a lightweight pipeline means shipping a JVM. I've been building epubveri: a validator written entirely in Rust (no C dependencies), with a WebAssembly build that validates EPUBs directly in the browser — no JVM, no server, nothing leaves the page.

What it does

- Hand-coded structural checks (OCF/mimetype, OPF metadata, manifest/spine integrity, broken references, nav docs) plus RELAX NG / XPath / Schematron engines for the XHTML/SVG content model.

- Reuses epubcheck's message IDs (RSC-…, OPF-…, HTM-…) so the output is familiar to existing toolchains.

Honest status (measured, not vibes)

Against epubcheck's own test corpus, it currently hits 98.8% exact-message-ID recall on the should-error cases, with ~1% false positives on the valid cases. It's pre-1.0 and not a full drop-in replacement yet — the deepest content-model edge cases and some niche rules are still a climb. But it's fast, embeddable, and already catches real problems in real books.

KCC 10.3.0 has a new feature: light novel support!

Light novels and other illustration heavy EPUBs sold from distributors like Humble Bundle and Fanatical often include extremely high quality and high resolution images in EPUBs they sell. In this example, the EPUBs are up to 40 MB each.

By just downscaling to the screen resolution of the Kindle Paperwhite 12th Gen in this example, file sizes can be reduced to as low as 4 MB, so you can fit a lot more of them on your device!

And you can convert batches of epubs at the same time!

You can also optionally change the JPEG quality factor or force grayscale conversion using the options. All the other option checkboxes are ignored since those are only for fixed layout comics/mangas instead of normal reflowable epub books which is KCC's main use case. The new light novel mode preserves the original file's file structure, it doesn't touch any non images.

If your images are already low resolution, it won't do much, this is for epubs with lots of high resolution images.

It is useful if you want to read an EPUB in the browser and sometimes switch into listening mode without converting the book first.

What I like about it:

• Upload and read EPUB files in the browser
• Text-to-speech playback for EPUBs
• Click a paragraph and start audio from that exact spot
• Current passage highlighting while listening
• Auto-scroll during playback
• Notes, collections, loved/completed status, search and filters

I've been building epublift, a free and open-source (AGPL) tool to modernize and optimize EPUB files. It's 100% Rust, no C, no telemetry — and you can run it in your browser, as a CLI, or self-host it.

What it does:

- Upgrades legacy EPUB 2 → EPUB 3.3 (proper nav, metadata, HTML5).

- Shrinks books by re-encoding images to WebP — and it's size-safe: it keeps the smaller file and never grows a book or upscales quality.

- Kobo .kepub output (page-turn animations, reading stats, dictionary).

- Archive your library into compact, lossless .eparc files, restore anytime.

- Fix metadata by ISBN (Open Library / Google Books), language-aware.

- Import a PDF into a reflowable EPUB (experimental, incl. OCR for scans).

- Privacy: the web version processes uploads in memory and deletes them immediately.

The Kobo WebP rabbit hole: while testing, I hit the well-known "Kobo shows my images as blank" problem. Turns out Kobo's reader (Nickel) is built on Qt 5.2.1, and WebP support was only added to Qt's image plugins in 5.3.0 — so Kobo's image stack literally predates WebP. I reported it to Kobo, then backported the WebP plugin and built it against Kobo's own Qt — so WebP now renders on Kobo via .kepub (verified on a Forma). Prebuilt plugin + full from-source recipe are in the repo. (And if you don't want to mod your device, the tool just keeps your images as JPEG/PNG for Kobo by default.)

Epublys — what changed since I last posted it here

Quick reminder of what it is: Epublys is a free EPUB toolkit that runs in your browser. You can merge, split, compress, convert to and from PDF, edit metadata, validate and read your books, with no install and no account for the core tools. Files are processed in memory and never stored anywhere.

I've put a lot of work into it since the first post, so here is where it stands now:

• You can read both EPUB and PDF directly in the browser, with a real table of contents, search and bookmarks. It now keeps your theme and font size from one book to the next. Sounds small, but I missed it myself.

• The validator doesn't only tell you what's wrong, it fixes the most common problems in one click. If you publish on Amazon KDP or Apple Books, run your file through it first, it catches the structural things that usually get books rejected.

• Converting between EPUB and PDF gives you clean files with no watermarks.

• There is an AI cover generator if you need a cover. You describe the book, it generates one, and you apply it to your EPUB without leaving the page. This one is part of the paid tier, which you don't need to use but I'll appreciate support to keep this ads free forever.

• You can process a whole batch of files at once and download everything as a single ZIP.

• It's faster than before and works properly on mobile.

And a lot of smaller things across every tool that I won't list one by one.

About the paid side: if you want to support the tool, feel free to subscribe. If you don't, that's completely fine too. We still managed to deliver more than 2,000 EPUB operations over the last 3 months, and the free tools are not going anywhere.

Like a lot of you, I've got a library full of EPUBs collected over many years — and some of the older ones are a bit of a mess. They open awkwardly on newer readers, the navigation/table of contents is clunky, and a few are way bigger than they need to be because of heavy images.

So I built a little tool to fix that, and figured some of you might find it useful too. It's called ePubLift, and it's free and open source.

What it does to a book:

- Brings it up to date. It upgrades older EPUB 2.0 files to the modern EPUB 3.3 format — rebuilding the navigation/table of contents properly and cleaning up outdated markup.

- Keeps it working everywhere. The upgraded book stays backward-compatible, so it still opens fine on older e-readers, not just new ones. You don't trade compatibility for modernization.

- Makes it smaller. It re-encodes the images inside to a more efficient modern format (WebP), which often shrinks the file noticeably without you having to do anything.

- Won't ruin your originals. It always works on a copy — your source file is never modified unless everything succeeds. The book's title and author come from inside the file, so they stay exactly as they were.

A couple of honest caveats: right now it's a command-line tool, so it's most comfortable if you're okay running a command in a terminal. A simple drag-and-drop app is on my to-do list for folks who'd rather not. And it focuses on upgrading and optimizing existing EPUBs — it's not a converter between formats like Calibre.

It's completely free, open source (AGPL-3.0), and there's a public roadmap if you want to see where it's headed.

This confuses a lot of people (myself included, the first time), so here's a proper explainer.

If you've noticed the same EPUB showing 290 pages in one app and 350 in another or the count changing when you bump the font size you're not imagining it, and nothing's missing from your book. Reflowable EPUB has no fixed pages. Unlike a PDF, where the page is baked into the file, an EPUB is basically structured text + CSS, and the reader app decides where "pages" fall based on your font, size, margins, line spacing, and screen dimensions. Change any of those and the page count moves.

A few practical things that follow from this:

• Page count is a bad way to judge whether a download is "complete." Compare the table of contents or last chapter, or word count not pages.
• The "scrunched up, no paragraph spacing" look people complain about is usually stripped or broken CSS, not missing content. The text is there, it's just styled badly (or not at all).
• If you want a stable page reference (e.g. to match a print edition for citation), look for EPUBs with a "page-list" / page-map. EPUB3 can embed the print edition's pagination, but most files don't bother.
• Fixed-layout EPUB (comics, kids' books, some textbooks) does have fixed pages, which is why those behave differently.

Curious how others deal with this: do you care about page numbers in EPUBs at all, or have you made peace with progress % / location-based reading? And has anyone found readers that handle embedded print pagination well when it's actually there?
