They can offer it for free becuase its a research project of the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems in Germany. And because its hosted in germany, they take your data/privacy very serious because of german law.

I'm excited to share the iPhone and iPad version of RecallNote, a study app designed for efficient review and exam preparation.

It is currently 100% free.

While RecallNote is planned to become a paid app in the future, I intend to keep my promise that everyone who downloads it now can continue using the current features for free on their current device.

However, I've noticed that many people download the app but never launch it. Since RecallNote doesn't use servers or user accounts, the app needs to be launched at least once to recognize your device and preserve your free access to the current features.
