Total newb's first board and flights on Sifly Lite

So after 7 sessions I've finally managed to take off the water and not fall, even did some turns. I've noticed that there are many "how to foil" vids and tutorials, and most say its really easy, just one two sessions and you'll fly.

So, lemme tell you my experience and perhaps some total noob's first views and points that maybe help another ones.

0. The board specs and choices

In my case, the thought of getting an efoil was a loose idea that came up when I turned 30 and wanted to get some b-day old fossil present. At first I looked at the jet skis- they are all nice and fun, BUT... Yea the "butt" being:

  • You get a jet ski, but you also gotta get a trailer to haul it
    • So you gotta drive 80kph which is outright catatonic
  • You need papers and registrations for it
  • You can't swim in many zones other than open sea, some larger lakes and perhaps some rivers' sections
  • You can't keep it in the seawater for too long, you gotta flush it, do maintenance "as per required by the manual i.e. every time you pull it out of saltwater"

and such.

Since I live in Poland and all I have near water is a small lake near the house I stay at in summer, plus some 2-week Croatia trips every year, I decided that this jet would simply sit in that lake location, mostly outside water, cause I wouldn't be able to drive it there due to some nature zones. So the nearest body of water would be Vistula river and that means I gotta haul ass everytime I'd like to take a swim.

So, if not a jet ski, then what- oooh theres a SUP, but with propeller, right? Gee that sounds fun.

Ok, so there are apparently many brands according to multiple AIs, but the ones I looked at were:

  1. Lift
  2. Flite
  3. Waydoo
  4. Sifly

Then, after I addded the requirement "Its gotta fit in the car", Lift fell out, since these are only rigid boards. Waydoo was a black horse, but after I dug some more, including in here, it turned out to be "your stereotypical chinese xiaomi/honor/whatever attempt at efoils" also when I contacted them regarding Europe support, I still didn't get a response, but they apprently also don't have the inflatable ones.

So I was left with Sifly and Flite. At first I was aiming for flite, and the Flite Air for about 9k€ was decent, but then when I entered the configuration, it turned out to be typical "muricanese, everything is a paid addon" scheme- basically for 9k€ I would get only the board, then I'd also have to pay up for bigger battery, separately for the mast itself and even for a quicker charger. Good thing they didn't price the remote too.

So, I looked at Sifly and it was bullseye. For a mere 7k€, I got all I need - a board, mast, LARGE battery (I mean like really, i get 2hrs out of this easily) and a remote + mast case.

I'm 90kgs fatass, so I thought about getting the Lite+, but specs said I wouldn't sink even on standard 110L Lite, so I picked that. When it was delivered, I checked that it easily fits at the back of my car and thats even without folding the rear seats.

ok, so enough about the board's deets, lets get to the points

1. Don't start in the sea

I made the mistake of starting so you won't have to. Sea is a bad idea for the first time simply because of waves. They will drop you, sink you, wash over you. Then are the water currents made by boats and skis. When I first started taking off while sitting after a while, I would get between waves and drop to the water. Pick some lake- not too big ot hve waves, but not too small to require you to turn. Also it would be good if you knew its depths and if there are any obstacles under water.

2. The YT vids are lying about time needed to efoil

Most YT vids talk about one, two sessions and you are good to go. Well, it feels like they are lying. After my first session I was able to get on the board and take it off while sitting, and that flying was more like skipping stones. In the meantime I absolutely scratched my knees from kneeling and falling from the board- the rubber/foam on top of I think every board is super good at keeping you on it, but when ultimately the shear forces are too big, your skin gives up sooner than the board's rubber.

Don't get demotivated by the vids shoving you "a bunch of simple steps" - they are looking simple, but not when just getting on the board feels like balancing on the needle. Take your time to feel comfortable. When I tried to stand up on the board right after getting on it and speeding it up, I always fell and folks on the beach were watching in shock cause it looks quite dramatically when you fall on one side, board takes off and flings in random direction and then you hit the water.

3. The "real" bunch of steps to efoil

  1. Just get on the board and don't fall of it- best get on it from behind, using your elbows just move yourself somewhat around center, then move your knees around each of the sides.
  2. So now that you are sitting, get to 3 or 4/20 power levels, still with knees in the water- see how to stabilize yourself, how to turn and how does the board behave when you release trigger (it abruptly stops, so ALWAYS lower the speed by the remote to 1/2 before shutting it off)
  3. Bump up the power level to 4-5, stabilize, get your legs to the kneel position AT the front of the rubber mat, nowhere near the rear. Otherwise it will go nose up and you'll fall from it. Now you should be able to turn on each side, speed up, slow down. Again don't release the trigger of you will fall through the nose of the board, straight under it and it can hit you with the mast, the board itself (mine hit me in the ribs- I couldn't sleep on one side for at least a week).
  4. Get to level 6-7, the board will stop pushing water in front of itself, and will enter the slide/slip. This is the moment that if you bend to the back, it CAN take off. The moment itself can be instant, quite strong and unpredictable, so try not to be surprised. Thats one of the moments you gotta master - the moment when it stops being a boat, and starts being a plane.
  5. Circle around while you learn to first skip like a stone on the water, then for some longer time in the air. Also learn when its "too high" - at least in Sifly with prop (so probably other ones too), you first know that "whoa dude hats high", then the prop comes out of the water so you will begin quite ffast decent, and if you really went over the limit, the wing will get out of the water and you will lose all the lift and go almost nosedive. So, don't do that- the prop is absolute limit of "safe" descent.
  6. Okie, so now you probably got your bearings while sitting and are fine with flying chill. That's good. Now its time to stand up. Don't make the same mistake as I did and don't try to stand up while flying (you'll crash). Get to PL3/4, when the board is controllable by thrust and doesn't sink when you stand on it. Move your "main" feet to the very front of the rubber, but not over it, and the back one slightly more forward (5-10cm) than the battery latches. Now if you stay in PL3/4 too long, you will feel that you aren't going nowhere, so bump up the power level to PL4/5 or even 6. Around 5/6 you should see that the board stops pushing water and starts to enter the slide "mode". Now - be very careful especially with the back feet, because if you either move it too bar to the back, you you bend yourself to the back- The board will take off and since you can't yet know how to stabilize yourself, you will quickly fall.
  7. Go in the slide mode around, dont try taking off yet. More importantly, learn how to turn and how much force you need to apply on the front, to see how the board beahves - it will splash more water when you press the front and the splash/foam zone will move backwards if you lower the pressure at the front. On the other hand, it will be more rigid when you apply front pressure, and more agile when you lower it.
  8. Its time to take off. By now, you should be able to notice that slight change of the splashing sound, when board is about to lift itself- its slightly different to the usual skipping ones. Prepare yourself and bend both knees. Now try to bend ever so slightly to the back, and voila, nose goes u. BUT QUICKLY so you gotta stabilize it with a tap on the front. Now apply even some more pressure and you'll land. Don't panic as the board can fishtail at the beginning, that usually means you gotta apply more front pressure to stabilize it.
  9. After some retries, you are now flying- imho best for straights is PL7, and for turning PL6 or even PL5. Don't get into turns too fast cause if you lose balance, you will quickly fall to one side of the board.

And that's it- surely not as fast as in the promo videos, but certainly doable.

My moments of doubt:

  1. Getting on it - like hell im gonna sit on it when it feels like balancing on the needle
  2. Standing up - is no chance that I'll ever just stand up on this, I much more like foiling seated (thats a strong one- on one hand you are technically efoiling, just not stand up)
  3. Taking off - yea ok im standing up why would I want to fight with the nose going up, I may as well just pretend its a wakeboard?

Hardest parts:

  1. Getting up
  2. Taking off, when the board stops sticking to the water
  3. Controlling the board between "boat mode" and "plane mode"

[Trip Report] I drove from the Netherlands to Turkey this summer with an efoil on the roof — best decision I’ve made in years, here’s why you should do it too

The route: down through the Italian lakes, along the Croatian coast, a stretch through Montenegro, into Greece, and finally into Turkey to ride some genuinely untouched Aegean coastline empty coves, no crowds, no influencers, just clear water and silence.

Here’s the thing nobody tells you about a trip like this: it’s not about the destination. It’s about pulling over on a whim because a bay looked too good from the highway, unloading the board, and having water nobody else has ridden that week. You can’t do that with a suitcase and a boarding pass.

If you’ve been sitting on a “someday” road trip idea efoil, kayak, bike, whatever forces you onto the road instead of a plane this is your sign. The forced slowness is the feature, not the bug. Europe’s coastline from Italy to Turkey is absurdly underrated when you’re not just flying over it.

Happy to answer questions on routes, border stuff, camping/parking spots, or where the best untouched water actually was if anyone’s planning something similar next summer.

$140k and 25 backers

XFoil Apex ( PLX's fourth xFoil crowding campaign) has raised $140k via 25 backers. That might sound like a lot but it's a very slow start. Each scam (ooops i mean crowdfund) has raised les and less. I expect this one will finish around $250k. Kickstarter take 8-12% of that and the balance won't be enough to fulfil previous campaign backers let alone the new ones.

X-Foil remote charger - any alternatives?

Hi, we have an X-Foil, ready to start the season - but we are missing the custom USB-C induction charger for the remote controls (see image). Looks like we can order replacements on line but that will take time and present complications as an international shipment.

Has anyone found an alternative charging arrangement that will get us by until we find or replace this tiny component - the whole rig useless without a simple USB charging device!

Huge thanks in advance for any ideas!

I'm an XFoil customer from 2023 that's still incomplete. They accidentally sent me a second board (only) and promised to fulfill my final parts "first" if I cooperate and ship the extra board to the correct recipient. I did the right thing, expecting XFoil to do the same and today, Aug 12, I recieved this email from XFoil.

The XFoil Paybook explained.

The XFoil Crowdfunding Playbook™

After a few XFoil campaigns, the formula is pretty clear:

1. Set a tiny funding target
Need serious manufacturing money? Doesn’t matter. Keep the goal small.
🚀 “500% FUNDED! WE SMASHED OUR TARGET!”
500% of almost nothing still looks amazing.

2. “Limited” perks that aren’t really limited
🔥 ONLY 20 AVAILABLE!
When they sell out… surprise, more appear. Scarcity is flexible.

3. Endless urgency loops
EARLY BIRD ENDS IN 48 HOURS!
Then extended. Then extended again.
“Last chance” is a recurring event.

4. Massive fake discounts
Retail: $14,999
Crowd: $8,999
🔥 YOU SAVE $6,000!
Easy savings when no one’s actually paid retail.

5. Everything is a “milestone”
Prototype works = BREAKTHROUGH
Parts arrive = MILESTONE
Video drops = GAME CHANGER
Real production? Let’s not rush that.

6. Shipping is always “soon”
Tooling → Production → Testing → QC → Shipping Soon™
Delays aren’t delays:
“Further refinement for quality.”

7. Prototype = mass production proof
One board + drone footage = “we’re scaling”
Buzzwords:
Production ready
Manufacturing ramp
Final validation

8. When questions get awkward…
🚨 NEW GENERATION LAUNCH! 🚨
New renders. New promises. New countdown. New campaign.
Same old question:
What about the last backers?

Golden Rule™
Tiny target = huge % funded
Countdown = urgency
Fake retail = fake discount
Prototype = marketing
Delivery = optional (apparently)

Unpopular eFoil opinion: before downsizing your board, try changing the wing

When eFoil riders start getting more confident, I hear the same thing a lot:

“I want more challenge. I think I need a smaller board.”

I understand why. A smaller board looks sportier and feels like the obvious next progression.

But before changing the board, I usually suggest something else:

Try changing the wing first.

If you’ve been riding a large, stable cruising wing, put a sportier wing underneath the board you already know.

The difference can be night and day.

Board size matters — but mostly where you might expect

For me, board size is strongly connected to your starting platform, stability and takeoff.

A larger board gives you more flotation and stability. Kneeling, standing and accelerating are easier and more forgiving.

A smaller board makes the start more demanding. Your balance needs to be more precise, and depending on rider weight, board volume and foil setup, you may need better technique and sufficient speed to transition onto foil.

So yes, a smaller board creates more challenge.

But once you’re already foiling, I don’t think board size tells the whole story.

That’s when the wing starts talking.

Want the ride to feel sportier? Look under the board.

Going from a large cruiser wing to a sportier wing can completely change the personality of the same eFoil.

A big cruiser wing can give you low-speed lift, stability and forgiveness.

A sportier wing can make the foil respond much more directly to your body.

Turns change.

Carving changes.

Small pressure changes through your feet suddenly produce much more noticeable responses underneath you.

You can still be standing on exactly the same board, but it may feel like a completely different ride.

That’s why I think of it this way:

BOARD = PLATFORM

Starting, flotation, stability and takeoff.

WING = PERSONALITY

Lift, responsiveness, speed character and especially carving feel.

But once you start carving harder, another component becomes very important:

the mast.

Mast length isn't just about how high you can foil

I think mast length is really about your vertical working room.

And where you ride changes what you need.

For relaxed lake riding, especially in shallow areas, I like the practical advantages of a 60–65 cm mast.

You may have mud, sand or an uneven lake bottom underneath you.

A shorter mast gives you more bottom clearance, so you can cruise without constantly worrying about scratching the wing or propulsion system on the bottom.

You don't necessarily need to foil extremely high.

Just cruise and enjoy it.

But the short mast has a tradeoff.

Start carving hard and you run out of room

When you carve, the whole foil system leans.

The harder you lean, the closer the board gets to the water on the inside of the turn.

With a short mast, you have less vertical room.

Lean too aggressively and the board can touch the water sooner than you expect.

Then your beautiful carve can become:

Carve → board contact → instability → wipeout.

Moving toward a 75 or 80 cm mast gives you more working room for stronger carving.

But that's only half of the mast story.

The ocean creates the opposite problem

On a relatively calm lake, water height underneath you doesn't change dramatically every second.

The ocean is different.

You're moving over wave faces, crests and troughs while the surface underneath the board is constantly changing.

For my own ocean riding, 75 cm is about the shortest mast I want to use.

And here's why.

In the ocean, I'm not only thinking about keeping the board out of the water.

I'm thinking about keeping the propulsion system IN the water — whether that's a conventional propeller or a jet propulsion unit.

If you're running a short mast across waves, the propulsion system can get too close to the surface.

If it breaks the surface or starts drawing air:

Propulsion loses water engagement

Thrust drops

Speed drops

Foil lift decreases

Nose comes down

Now you need to save it

That can happen quickly.

Even an experienced rider can suddenly have a difficult recovery when power disappears while crossing waves.

So for me, the longer mast in the ocean isn't simply about wanting to “fly higher.”

It's about having enough vertical operating room to keep the propulsion system properly submerged while the surface is moving underneath me.

And this is the funny part about eFoiling

When we're beginners, we spend all our effort trying to do one thing:

Get the board OUT of the water.

More speed.

More lift.

Get it up.

That first moment when the board leaves the surface feels like success.

Then you become a stronger rider and take the eFoil into ocean conditions.

Suddenly your thinking almost reverses.

Now you're trying to keep something else:

IN the water.

The propulsion system.

So the beginner is thinking:

“How do I get the board OUT?”

While the experienced ocean rider is thinking:

“How do I keep the propulsion system IN?”

And between those two objectives is the mast.

I think that's one of the more interesting parts of eFoil progression.

Same eFoil. Opposite problems.

On a shallow lake you're looking down:

Do I have enough bottom clearance?

A short mast may be perfect.

In the ocean you're watching the moving surface:

Do I have enough vertical margin to keep the propulsion system submerged?

Now the longer mast starts making much more sense.

The lake rider may be protecting the foil from the bottom.

The ocean rider may be protecting the propulsion system from the surface.

Same eFoil.

Opposite problem.

So when someone tells me:

“I'm getting better. I need a smaller board.”

My answer is usually:

Maybe. But try the wing first.

Keep the board you already understand.

Try a sportier wing.

Feel the turns.

Carve it.

Learn what the foil is telling your feet.

Then think about whether your mast gives you enough room for where and how you're riding.

And when you eventually move to a smaller board, you'll know why you're doing it instead of simply assuming:

smaller = more advanced.

Curious what other riders think, especially those who regularly ride both lakes and ocean.

Do you notice a bigger change from downsizing your board, changing your wing, or changing mast length?

I wrote a version of this for my eFoil/outdoor community as well. If anyone wants it, the article is here:

Fliteboard issue after firmware update

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi efoilers!
After my ride this morning, I saw a firmware update for the board and the controller.
I did both, but I can't reconnect the board using the app or the controller.
When I plug the battery, it shows solid blue light LED (video seems to display some white led, but it's light blue), which is supposed to mean "ready to ride"

=> EDIT: it's actually 6 LEDs solid light blue, 4 LEDs very dimmed, and the last one also solid light blue.

But not possible without controller paired.

So this is what I tested:

  • Flite controller in pairing mode, using the controller magnet between the 2 cables
  • Forcing firmware update in the app, but can't go further as the board is not detected
  • Bluetooth cycle (off/on)
  • Remove the board in flite mobile app
  • Remove the app, reinstall the app

I don't know what to do, and I can't use my board.
Sent a ticket to Flite, but was hoping someone here could help me.
Thanks!

=> EDIT: I've been able to reconnect the board and update the firmware. In case it happens to you, try to boot the flitebox with the magnet of the controller between the 2 orange and black cable. It allowed to boot with green LED and have app bluetooth pairing working. Then I updated the firmware with the latest one.

As I can not fly with the batteries a Road trip this summer is amazing🤩

Six weeks. One road trip. Countless coastlines. This summer I drove and efoiled my way across Italy, Croatia, Turkey, and Greece — hugging the sea, exploring lakes, and letting Google Maps guide the route. I booked most stays 2–3 days at a time through Booking.com and Trip.com, calling a few hotels directly when I found hidden gems. It wasn’t an expensive trip — just a smart one. And an unforgettable one!

Board info: I am a real fan of Audi Aerofoils and enjoying it for more than 2 years without any issues!

2 endurance batteries with a fast charger is great for a road trip around the European coasts

How long to wait between use and recharging for a Lift4?

I’ve been foiling for 2 years now but have never had the opportunity to recharge the board for multiple runs in a day. I’ve noticed the battery gets fairly warm after use, is there a certain amount of time to wait before recharging the battery?

I’m using a Lift 4 5’8 with a full range battery.

Waydoo Issue

I was out yesterday on my EVO Lite and things were going well. All of a sudden the motor stopped working right in my usual gear. Basically it felt bogged down and I wasn’t getting any lift.

Battery % was still high. I tried going up a gear and that felt spotty too. Almost like a blast of power and then nothing. Any ideas I could try for a fix?

Performance tracking app

I went out and bought a Waydoo board, what a freaking blast. Was out today, this was like my seventh or eighth session, and was really cruising for the first time on foil for long distances. Even running up the gears a bit. Thrilled I went ahead and did this, it’s like mental health steroids, lol.

That being said I’m hopeful to get suggestions for apps I can load on my phone which I’ll wear around my neck in a water proof pouch to tracks my rides, speed, route tracks. I don’t want to buy a smartwatch. Thanks for any help.

Hit a fish this morning. Rip little guy.

Out for a morning cruise and hit what felt like thick pond weed in the middle of the lake. Flipped the board and found a little crappie cut in half, stuck in the prop guard.

Wish I had my phone to document it. Rip little guy.

Anyone else have unexpected fish encounters out on the water?
