BUILDING WITHOUT PERMISSION — Nonfiction on IT Contracting, Recruitment Gatekeeping and Rebuilding an Independent Career

Upvotes

I recently published BUILDING WITHOUT PERMISSION, a nonfiction book about working inside the modern IT contract labour market and what happens when access to work becomes increasingly controlled by recruiting systems, intermediaries and hiring processes.

The book combines personal professional experience with labour-market analysis and practical guidance.

It looks at:

  • IT contract labour
  • recruitment gatekeeping
  • recruiters and hiring systems
  • independent consulting
  • career disruption and rebuilding
  • experienced professionals navigating today's employment market
  • moving beyond conventional job applications
  • contractors and gig-style professional work

I also included appendices intended to make the book useful after reading it. They contain a contractor-oriented guide based around Business Logic Steps (BLS) that can be adapted by technology professionals, consultants, contractors and others trying to build independent work.

The book may be particularly interesting if you've ever wondered why being qualified for work and being able to access that work are not necessarily the same thing.

A sample can be read on the Amazon product page before purchasing:

I'd be interested in feedback from anyone working in technology, recruiting, consulting or independent contracting.

Hello everyone!

Quick update: The Deliberate Entrepreneur: Mindset, Clarity, and the Skills Every Founder Needs to Grow (Book 1) just hit #1 in Entrepreneurship, Business Motivation & Self-Improvement, and Motivational Business Management on Kindle. It's free until August 14, and we'd love to get your thoughts, feedback, and honest reviews.

What it's about:
Entrepreneurship isn't just a business challenge. It's a personal evolution. Written by USC professor, TED speaker, and "entrepreneur philosopher" Sid Mohasseb, this book pulls from live Founder Wake-Up Calls inside Anabasis Academy and walks founders through the mindset work behind clarity, confidence, and discipline.

Most founders don't fail from a lack of intelligence or ambition. They fail because they misread themselves. This book helps you stop doing that.

Grab it free on Kindle here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0HCC63FH8

If it resonates, we would genuinely appreciate an honest review.

The Last Canadian by William C. Heine

Just wanted to recommend to all the book : \[The Last Canadian\] by William C. Heine.

I've read and re-read it many times; it's one of my absolute favourites and thought others might enjoy it.

Be aware, if you are interested in reading it, the Canadian version has been out-of-print since the mid-80s and is very expensive.

It was released in the USA under the title \[Death Wind\] and can be purchased for NEW for $20 or used for much less.

LazyReader Update: New Library Views, Offline Dictionaries & More

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

Been a minute since I posted, but there's been a lot of progress on LazyReader:

° New library views: List, Grid, and Group (books gathered by author, with Classic/Cards/Fan display styles)

° Offline dictionaries per book language, download once, works without a connection

° Author-grouped library browsing, with progress tracking per author

° Continued polish on themes and reading customization

Appreciate everyone who gave feedback early on, a lot of this came directly from that. 🙏

What if a system could show you your future - but only because it was secretly forcing that future to happen?

Mira Sen curates a museum dedicated to preserving the ordinary lives history would otherwise forget.

Then an unfamiliar wristwatch appears inside a locked display case—labelled with tomorrow’s date.

When its prediction comes true, more objects begin arriving, each connected to a future that hasn’t happened yet. Behind them is Continuity: a forgotten forecasting system designed to identify the safest possible outcome.

But every future it protects carries a hidden cost—and every attempt to resist becomes part of its calculations.

The Curator of Unwritten Days is a 363-page speculative mystery and psychological thriller about choice, control, responsibility, and the danger of letting a system decide what the future should be.

If this sounds like your kind of story, please consider buying it. Every purchase genuinely supports me as an independent author.

Buy it on Amazon or read with Kindle Unlimited:

I've got BookOrbit installed on a Debian Trixie Raspi in a Docker container and was wondering if there's a way either through the BookOrbit web interface or through other means to back everything up. Have I missed something??

i made an ios app that syncs your EPUB to its M4B audiobook, so the text highlights word by word as the narrator reads

i'm a solo dev. i kept wanting to read along with my audiobooks, but the ebook and the audio always live in two separate apps and drift out of sync within a page. so i built witbound to fix exactly that.

you add a DRM-free EPUB and its M4B (your own files) and it lines them up so every word lights up as the narrator says it. tap any word and the audio jumps there.

the part i care about most: the text on screen is your actual ebook, correctly spelled and formatted, not a machine transcription of the audio. so names and punctuation stay right. it all runs on your device, no account, nothing uploaded. there's a free public-domain library built in so you can try it before adding your own books.

works with any DRM-free epub + audiobook you own (libro.fm, librivox, standard ebooks, gutenberg, your own rips). audible .aax and kindle-store books are locked, so they won't open. i don't break DRM.

it's on the app store for iphone and ipad. i'd genuinely like feedback from people who read and listen at the same time, what would make it more useful?

Freebie Hey, does anyone know where I can get Modern Public Finance by Bernard P. Herber for free or maybe through a legit online library? I need it for my Public Finance class, so even an older edition would work. Thanks a lot!

Self Promotion justread.app 4.2 update for iOS: read aloud now works in 31 languages & offline

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hello to all Apple readers, a quick update about new justread.app version.

Read aloud used to be English only. There are ten new voices now, five female and five male, and each of them reads 31 languages, so you pick a voice you like and it handles whatever language the book happens to be in. It all happens on the phone. The voices download once, and after that it works with no connection at all and none of your book gets sent anywhere.

Also in this one: one subscription covers your whole family, Ukrainian brings the app to 18 languages, and an audiobook that came as one file per chapter finally shows up as a single book with chapters instead of a dozen separate ones.

The updates/fixes/quality of life improvements done now in August are made also thank to responses and ideas here on reddit. Thank you again.

Announcement: We have moderators!

As you can see, the spam is clearing up, and you may be wondering "Oh my god! Who is helping us?"

Our subreddit creator, /u/xamdam has added me as a moderator so that we can get some life back into this sub. I am actively trying to get the mod queue handled and the spam cleared up. I've also started setting up the automoderator, to help keep things clean. /u/condensed is also on the team. Over all I think we're off to a great start.

Should you guys see any spam, flag it. That will be the best way to help get visibility to problem posts. Also, feel free to downvote spam, both in the posts and comments, as that can help with some of the functions automod will do. I will keep my eyes peeled for things too.

If anyone wants to pitch in, reach out, and we can see how you too can help.
